Could Sade be called the first neo soul artist? Is that a whack opinion or could I possibly have a point? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I dunno.. didn't she come out in '84? Seems too early for "Neo Soul" besides her compositions are more fuller and dynamic than neo soul music At this point in history, we have a choice to make

She came out at a time when everything was synth-driven.

That argument can be made, I think. Tony, Toni, Tone also needs a nod for helping to bridge the gap between old soul and so called neosoul.

Especially with "Sons of Soul" and "House of Music". Those albums were definitely "neo-soul" before the term came along. To me, "neo-soul" was always around. A lot of the songs that were big in the late 80s and the early 90s could be classified as "neo-soul" musically. It was when this young group of black kids that were into this poetry reading started calling it "neo-soul". **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I get where you're going with this, but I wouldn't classify her sound as neo-soul.
Neo-soul (to me) is a thow-back to more of an attempt at the 'orignal' soul sound (motwon) whereas Sade is mainstream soul.

I can agree with you guys; I really wasn't sure how to classify and you're right it is a smooth jazz, yep.

I definately noticed things getting worse beginning in the late 1980s and even worse in the 1990s. It was when this young group of black kids that were into this poetry reading started calling it "neo-soul".
That's a great description because whenever I hear neo soul music, I always think of a black version of those groups of people that used to wear black shades, black pants, and black turtleneck sweaters back in the 1960s gathering in a smoke filled club reading dorky poetry while some fool beats on some bongos. With neo soul, music seemed to be getting so uppity, elite, and "cultured". Hell, put those damn poetry books down, speed things up, bring in some meaningless lyrics like "shake shake it baby" and get back to throwing down! . . . Neo-Soul.. the slippery slope. I agree with daPrettyman, on the Smooth Jazz category, but then there's Soul, R&B, and Pop.

Neo Soul has a homespun sound, whereas Sade's sound is polished and elegant. The songs' themes may be similar but very different styles.
And I don't believe neo soul is a slippery slope in fact I believe it is the antithesis of hiphop and rap uplifting a segment of the young population to a style that is hip, equally expressive and less downtrodden.

Sade has never been neo-soul.

I don't know if I could coin Sade's music as "neo-soul" though i get where you could arrive at that idea. I think that she is the one artist who's music cannot be categorized. Her music is a whole other genre in itself. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

There were LOTS of soul singers at the time. A lot of the songs people like Con Funk Shun, Cameo, The Commodores, etc. all could be classfied as "neo-soul", so at the time, it was straight up soul. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

i don't have album release dates and all but i'd say Loose Ends before Sade easily. And Soul II Soul and Brand New Heavies would have to be in the conversation too.
