I've been a fan since her first album. boolol When she first came out, I saw this girl who was the same age as me that sang live, played an instrument, and had an appreciation for 70s soul music like I did, and that's what drew me to her. I fully realize she's not the second-coming of Stevie Wonder, and I put that hype aside and take the music for what it's worth.

I believe she has the right intentions when it comes to music and performing, but doesn't quite have the talent to follow through. Her pilfering (credited and uncredited) of 70s and 80s music for her "songwriting" is problematic. Her lyrics tend to be shallow and cliched. Her vocal style has become increasingly annoying. She could be just fine if she sang properly and within her range. I usually find her (or the record label's) single choices to be the weakest songs, and not representative of the albums as a whole, while I enjoy many of the album cuts. On the latest album, though, there's only two songs I really care for, and the rest is uninspired and a chore to listen to, in my opinion. Perhaps she needs to take a longer break after this album and really find herself and her musical direction. I still like her concerts, though, and put her youtube concert on my mp3 player instead of the album.

My biggest complaint is the way she comes off in interviews and speeches. I cringe every time she speaks. She either spouts off some pseudo-intellectual bullshit, or puts on some faux-ghetto mannerisms. Just be real. She was valedictorian of her class and accepted to Columbia, so she can't be a dummy, but you wouldn't know it from the way she speaks.

Despite all my complaints, I'd still take Alicia over the Beyonces and Rihannas any day, and will always make it a point to check out her latest releases. I only put effort into complaining because I believe the potential is there.

Bilal recorded a KICK ass version of "How Come U Don't Call" at the same time, one of the better Prince covers.

Whats funny to me though, is how Prince gave props to Alicia for singing it but in the same breath adviced Bilal to "leave it alone".

Talk about flip-flopping.

I thought is was Adore that Bilal recorded and Bilal said Prince was not happy that he did it and said something like come to the park and let's create something new

That is correct. How Come U Don't Call was recorded after Bilal did his version of Adore.

I started to get turned off when she was with Prince in NYC at the aftershow for the 2002 ONA concert. I couldn't believe how horrible she sounded. confused

I can't remember which awards show it was, but she sounded like it was 20 below in there and she was screaming at a football game-- with a cigar.
I thought eyepop "What is up with THAT?!

Yeah... I'm thru, too. disbelief

Its not only the fact that she's a straining mess, vocally. Macy Gray can't sing worth a damn, but the girl is expressive and VERRRRY intersting.

My problem with Alicia is the fact that her music is drier than a nun's pussy in the wintertime.

Oh yeah, I feel the same way about John Legend as well,,,,,both compete each other when it comes to how fast they could induce mofos into a coma.

I've noticed a common thing within this thread. Most of the ones bashing Keys don't even own albums and are pulling random clips off YouTube of performances that may or maynot be her best. Now, let's be real. How many times does she perform these songs?? Every performance is going to be great?? Really?? Name me any musician, athlete, actor or writer the hits the mark EVERYTIME.

I remember reading a comment that wondered, WONDERED, if she played the piano live. What?? So you've never even been to a concert but you want to say how much she sucks?? WTF!!! Come on people. Just stop. We will bash Alicia, but deep down we all know Prince hasn't had a decent song in YEARS!!!! Boring dull music?? Try the last TEN Prince albums.

And you came to that conclusion how exactly? lol

This is the FIRST album I didn't own,,,,,and with good reason because she's faithful to her pattern; making people dosing off.

No, I still stand by what I said. If I'm PAYING for something at least it should give me my money's worth, "GOOD ENOUGH" doesn't cut it,,,it should be DAMN GOOD.

Otherwise I'll shift my intrest somewhere else,,,,,like I did when she released this garbage.

They're just posting crap hoping to work people up. Out of all the wack crap we hear on the radio, "I wish I could fuck every girl in the world", Alicia's stuff doesn't hack it?? This world is lost!!

I can respect this response, because I do feel that there are a number of people that will mindlessly rat-pack on top of a popular opinion once a few alpha-characters have strongly stated their points of view. Although I may not have assumed to know what level of experience any other person may have had with Alicia's music before expressing their dislike for her. Reading this however did inspire me to be more clear about how I feel about her exactly, to distinguish my feelings from the common haters.

And actually, I like Alicia's music, and I even think she's very talented. It's HER personally that I don't like, lol. As much as you can "know" any celebrity, I can just tell that she and I would not get along very well at all. And for what it's worth, she probably wouldn't care for me very much either, lol. But I can't dismiss the fact that I DO like her music, and despite the opinion of some, feel that she is a competent musician. I have all of her CD's, just obtained "The Element of Freedom" this week, and while I haven't listened to the entire thing yet, I haven't heard anything on it yet that I "hate". But again, if we were in the same room together, I would have to resist the temptation to smack that smirk off her face, lol. Because on a personal level, I think she's a phony, and needs to stop acting like grown-folks can't see through her little Down Low front.

NO, we do not ALL know Prince hasn't had a decent song in YEARS. Personally speaking, there have been several songs off of every album he's produced that I have enjoyed, in many cases entire albums (some of which get bashed regularly here on The Org). Even the songs that Prince has made that I don't particularly like (...and there are a few), I can recognize and appreciate that they're produced well. So I strongly, and respectfully, disagree with what you feel we ALL know, and would highlight the fallibility of speaking in absolutes.

I ain't trying to hate on this chick, so leave the "you're so negative" bullshit aside. There's a method to this madness.

I've went back and forth with this chick. Dug her when she came out. The all knowing Bart VanHemelen said she was a flash in the pan and her second album would flop and she'd disappear, but alas.....here she is eight years later.

Her first album.....good. Second, much better. She kept the momentum with only 2 years between those first two albums. I kept up with her, and liked her for the most part. "You Don't Know My Name" and "If I Ain't Got You" had to grow on me, but they did, and I really liked them. A DJ friend of mine from KISS-FM here gave me Diary. I love that she plays piano, and can sing, and writes decent music most times. Being a piano player, I can appreciate when someone can PLAY a damn instrument without ProTools behind them.

But then it was four years until her next CD. I kind of lost interest. She did an Unplugged, and a few guest appearances with Eve and Gwen Stefani. Eh. Good stuff I guess. Then I saw her at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, talking about Prince, with Andre 3000. I thought, "Is this chick high, or just fucking arrogant as all hell?" I voted for the latter. For whatever reason, he laughing to herself, as if she was the only one who saw Prince's greatness, was just...well, comical. It's like "He can make you cry, he make you laugh....." (laughs to herself and thinks "these white MFers don't get it, ya'll don't know) "....he can make you feel like you can fly..."

Then I started to watch her interviews and I saw it over and over again. Either she was rehearsed and trying to remember what she was going to say, OR she was just basking in her own greatness when someone asked something like "You write all your own songs, where do you get that inspiration?", or whatever. I kind of dismissed her, forgot about her new albums, and ignored her.

Then she pops up on The View today. She said performed two songs, one of which was the song she does with Jay-Z. Can't remember the name, but it's catchy for sure. She did a short interview before the first song. She talked about her philanthropy with Keep A Child Alive, or whatever the organization is she's working with. Good cause, don't get me wrong. But she said something to the effect, "People come up to me all the time and ask me how to be a part of keep a child alive?"

eek

Really, Alicia? REALLY? Does John Doe, John Q. Public, and Jane Everyday come up to you, ask for your autograph, THEN ask how to save a child? Or do they just run up with a serious look and attitude, grab your hand in a moment of gentle bonding and say, "Alicia, I want to save the chid'run. Can you help me?"

Kudos for her being part of something bigger than her front teeth and her ego. Really, good for her for going and seeing the poverty that still exists in the world, and doing something about it. But gheezus....get over yourself, even just a little bit. Do it for the chid'run.

I was gonna stay out of this, but I can bite my tongue no longer.

I have never liked Alicia and I feel her success is owed more to the heft of Clive Davis behind her more than anything. I am not saying Alicia isn't talented. She is, but in no way does she have the degree of talent attributed to her and you have to look at the climate in which she made her debut.

2001 was a weird time. Teen pop, Britney, BSB, Nsync and the other clones that spawned as a result, was dying a quick death. Rap was not as generic as it is now and Beyonce was not yet "Queen B". Aaliyah would be dead in few months.

No one at that time was really doing what Alicia was doing and she had a compelling back story that burnished to the hilt. Add to that Oprah fawning, strategic appearances in media, etc, and a star was born.

When Alicia's first cd came out, she was ghetto as a mug and I could tell it was a put on and it grated.

Now that she is here to stay, I try not to take notice of her, but to be honest, her music has not progressed. It sounds the same. And Alicia is not that great of a vocalist.

I always say this-if she had come out in the 70s, no one would have paid her any mind.

What's wrong with letting people's opinions be just that: opinions?

I've bought every one of her albums and ended up giving them away because they bore me and I am sick of damn samples. I don't get her. I don't get the hype because there are singers out there who are tons better but don't fit a certain look so they will never get their due.

And I don't agree about Prince either but like I said, that your opinion. His stuff has been way better than Keys stuff to me.

My twocents on Alicia -

It's obvious that with each new album Alicia has been shaped to appeal to a more mainstream audience. However, I was done with her after her debut. That was the first and last album of hers I purchased. I found it VERY boring and uninspired. I just was not impressed. The hype set expectations that were not, and to me still have not been, met. I appreciate her for attempting to bring live instrumentation and performance to the forefront, but she is not that great.

Also, seeing live performances of hers further solidified her wackness to me. I agree with those of you who said she isn't a great pianist. I noticed in her early shows that she usually had a second player doing the heavy lifting. I don't know if that's changed. However, I think that because she is the only female R&B singer out there playing an instrument people think she's a goddess on the keys.

Finally, when she speaks, she comes off as VERY contrived and disingenuous to me. For example, I know people (Prince included) loved her introduction of Prince at the RRHOF, but it was too much for me. It came off as trying way too hard. Also, I heard her on Steve Harvey Friday talking about the new album and how it was all her, all her vision, that she did everything on it. Then he asked about the "sleeping with a broken heart" song and what inspired her to write that, and she said some up and coming writer wrote it. Granted, she later said she liked to collaborate, but prior to that, she was trying to make it sound like a self-contained, one woman production.
perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...
