Shouldnt someone in HIP HOP be talking about this??? I mean she is not relevant to that genre so why bother? This would be like Quarterback Tom Brady saying "hey theres too much downtime in a baseball game"

Kanye West spoke out against homophobic lyrics in hip-hop/rap a while back. Even today, he is THE only rap artist to do so.

Yeah thats more of what im talking about, thats who should be talking about it, i mean its nice for GaGa to say it, but its irrelevant to that genre that doesnt recognize her anyway. I would be like The lead singer of Judas Priest saying there is too much right wing talk in country music? i mean, nice point, but irrelevant.

Yes, but unfortunately it's impossible to take him seriously about anything else so his comments were more than a little irrelevant too.

Your point is well taken.

The real point that I'm making is that hip-hop has always been homophobic in tradition AND sheer nature. What other genre (besides reggae/dancehall) that ever given men (especially black men) the opportunity to be the men that they want to be at the expense of putting down other men (straight or gay) by questioning their level of manhood?

Fair enough. But you notice that no other rap artist ever spoke out against homophobia in hip-hop/rap. Most rap artists don't seen anything wrong with questioning the manhoods of other men.

Most people Take everything Kanye West says with a grain of salt. The core rap audience either considers him gay, eccentric or some form of "out there" he doesn't speak to them. The people who do listen to him aren't homophobic(mostly) so that's basically preaching to the choir. If it was someone like lil wayne or 50 cent or Jay-z Than that would be something. But the day that happens is the day they lose they're male support, or at least half of it.
Did Prince ever deny he had sex with his sister? I believe not. So there U have it..

Well its a false live style that alot of them lead, one girl/model who has done quite a few rap/rb videos says, "good luck finding a straight man on set" so theres alot of false living and closeted rappers for sure.

Why didnt lady gaga talk about homophobia in rock, pop, and reggae music? I'm tired of people always calling out ((black)) rappers on their homophobia...its not just ((black)) rappers who are homophobic its other genres of music also.

True, but right now, with the way music is, she's the one people are tuning into and listening to so it's more likely people will hear this than a random rapper, sad as that is. I believe when Kanye said it, he was more popular than he is now.

As a ((black)) fan of all of those genres -- and not a particular fan of Gaga, I must say -- I think she did this largely because while homophobia does surely exist throughout the industry (which she acknowledges), homophobia in hip hop at present is the most visible, perhaps the most influential to pop culture, the most intrinsic to its subculture, and often the most vitriolic.

An experiment: In the space of 10 seconds, think of 5 MCs who've had homophobic content relatively recently. Now in that same time name 5 artists from the other genres you named. You needn't prove or disprove anything to me, but I'm gonna guess the latter challenge was significantly tougher (with maybe the exception of dancehall reggae, which is kissing cousins with hip hop).

I'm glad she called it out, and I wish hip hoppers and musicians of other genres would take it on more frontally, too.

Sorry, cuz it's worst in hip hop these days. If I'm wrong, tell me a single popular rock or pop song from this year that uses the word faggot or homo in a derogatory way.

Typical pop icon mentality. More statements made for "cool points" with her own crowd. She knows damn well that she is not relevant in the hip-hop community. She made the comment to appeal even more to her gay crowd, especially the ones outraged with hip-hop in general.
There's enough homophobia in pop music to keep her plenty busy with comments. Why doesn't she address the pop crowd? Nothing wrong with her giving her opinion but the motivations behind it are transparent.

Sorry, disagree, especially if she's talking about Kanye. He's hip hop, but he's also (arguably moreso) pop. She was going to tour with him, remember?

Not to mention the fact, in her defense, that she was ONLY talking about some unnamed rapper (ostensibly Kanye) -- not as a representative of hip hop at first, but simply as one of the world's most popular acts right now. The interviewer is the one who corralled the discussion to one about hip hop in general.

Middle America?!? I figured most of the homophobia was coming from people that the ABC Network were trying (and failed) to protect from Adam Lambert and his antics! lol

Well, I can only speak for this homo, but I can't stand her. Never could. She's so over hyped, and we're being spoon fed her nonsense by the media (read: Beyonce).

I have to take her comments with a squirt of hairspray. She's another artist who says there is homophobia in shit hop. That's not exactly anything groundbreaking on her part. Did it bring attention to it? Eh, perhaps, but I would bet not to a great extent. If she's just saying it to endear her gay fan base to her more, well that's just a bit of contrived bullshit then. Bet she comes out next year and admits she ate pussy in college or something, to appeal to her gay fans even more. Gheezus, just strap one on and fuck 'em all, Ms. Germanotta. Put a pillow up under their ass, they'll like that!
