Why isn't Kylie Minogue a superstar in America?

Especially when she is in other places. I mean, she has broken through briefly-once in the late 80s and then again, 7 years ago, but she just can't seem to become huge here. Is it because she doesn't want to?

The American mainstream doesn't embrace pure dance music.

American pop now = Miley Cyrus, hip-pop, Rihanna, Disney, "emo rock"

Europop = techno, electronic, frenetic dance reminiscent of disco, but it's "too fast" for the US market and "not profitable" unless it features a "rapper" on it. confused

different style,

when she debuted she was competing with Debbie Gibson and Tiffany so we picked home girls over the foreigner

too gay friendly for mainstream america.

It's very simple. Neighbours was not big in America. She's only big in countries where Neighbours was big. If you don't know about Neighbours, Wikipedia should fill you in.

In all fairness to Kylie, Loco Motion, I Can't Get You Out Of My Head, & Love At First Site (USA mix) were THE only 3 singles that were major career hits in the USA. I Should Be So Lucky & It's No Secret was also a minor hits.

As for the reason why Kylie never became a superstar in mainstream America, I can answer that in THREE WORDS: Madonna. and. Janet.

Sad but true. By 1995, pure club dance music was defeated by the gangsta style of hip-hop/rap on mainstream radio. Hip-house, Chicago house, Detroit techno, and Latin freestyle were all defeated as well.

Till this day, I think THIS^ was far worse than the "death" of The Funk or disco.

I wouldn´t say she´s a superstar in Europe either.

Exactly. Deborah Gibson was a big draw within her generation at the time. Kylie couldn't break even.

And yes, the red states couldn't handle Kylie's gay-friendly party atmosphere.

I don't think it's being "gay friendly" per se... I mean, look at Madonna.

I think it's more to do with her embracing camp - much moreso than any comparable act.

The Brits understand camp implicity. It's ingrained within us, from an early age.

Kylie is more overt in gayness than Madonna has been in a very long time. The last time Madge was openly as gay friendly as Kylie is now was 93. Madge has even gone to using mostly straight male dancers.

Well she's plowed her way through most of the gay ones; they need a break from her. lol

Yeah, I'm aware of that. However, to many straight people, if you're a man whom admits to being a Madonna fan, you may as well wave a rainbow flag in one hand and a butt plug in the other. The perception remains that Madonna is a gay-friendly act - and this isn't exactly untrue.

Kylie (and Capitol records) have made mistakes. She should have toured the U.S. soon after the success of the Fever album. The delay in releasing the X album in the U.S. was inexplicable. The choice of 'All I See' as a single was misguided and her performances of the song on U.S. television were weak.

Secret (Take You Home) Should have been the lead single for Body Langauge and she did tour the US she did some of those KISS FM Christmas parties around 2002 using Locomotion, fever version, Love At First Sight, In Your Eyes, and Can't Get You Out of My Head and a couple club dates for Slow.

and yes Kylie was flat last year on her TV Promo, but she didn't want to do them.
