Since always. biggrin I live in Michigan so I know a lot of nasty stories about Baker. Again, she makes Diana Ross look like Mother Theresa. biggrin

I read the whole story about her fued with Luther. I can't recall if it was part of David Nathan's "Divas" book or if I read it in a magazine. But, yes, Luther was making it very clear that he did not care for Anita at all because of her attitude and disrespect towards him.
[Edited 10/11/09 17:22pm]

Anita Baker has lived a pretty bad life, especially her childhood and she's pretty bitter about it!

I can believe you on that.

Luther had run ins with Anita Baker, En Vogue and Aretha Franklin.
The one with Aretha resulted in the GET IT RIGHT album being temporarily halted n 1983. She addressed in her book, and he in his. They fell out on three different occasions. The '83 situation was meted out by Valeries Simpson and Cissy Houston. Luther said a few unflattering things to Aretha in the studio and he got called for what he was by the soul Queen (the eff bomb insult word according to sources there). The main problem, as was referenced by another blogger in regards to Curtis Mayfield, they both tried to tell Miss Ree how to sing - and she don't like that!
There was also a falling out over his producer guaranteed fees and over the duet of "Doctor's Order" (she hated the mix and wanted to replace Luther with Glenn Jones on it)...Aretha also has major problems with females, period, ones born with vaginas and ones that wish they had been born with them, LOL.
Martha Revees, Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Patti LaBelle, Mary J. Blige, Diana Ross, Mavis Staples, Carole King, Leontyne Price, Mahalia Jackson, Beyonce` Knowles, Tina Turner and James Cleveland.
BTW, Aretha chartered the plane to Martin Luther King's funeral in Atlanta, and Gladys Knight and The Pips hitched a ride with her down there, and she felt like they were ungateful.
When Natalie Cole exploded on the scene, several of the tunes on her first album were targeted for Aretha, but she turned them down, as she did with "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out" by Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards (Chic's two front men, and everyone knows those cuts ended up on Ross and were smashes). Aretha sent Natalie flowers and a congrats telegram. In concert during that time, Aretha did a cover of "This Will Be". Some of Aretha's camp heard Natalie giggle about 'old girl must be running scared, she doing my songs in concert now', and it was on and popping. Natalie tried to speak to Aretha backstage at either the Grammys or the American Music Awards with a 'Girl have you been getting my messages, I have been calling you and you haven't returned my calls' - according to sources, Aretha made a sound of like 'hmpgggh' and grunted and pushed Natalie aside and kept walking. One of The Pips recalled Gladys speaking to Aretha backstage once and Miss Knight was totally igged. Bubba spoke to her and she chatted with him, and was informed Gladys spoke to you, of which there was no response. Gladys recalled a similar incident in her book when as a child she met another child named Aretha Franklin, and she extended her hand and said, "Hi, I am Gladys Knight", of which the young Franklin girl looked at her like she was crazy. The stories are numeorus. Chaka once said according to sources, "I am glad she never has cussed me out" LOL.
Also the Joss Stone proposed duet with Aretha Franklin was called off after Aretha's demands were beyond the pale.
Aretha, Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Mikki Howard, Diana Ross
and Luther all have/had reputations for being absolute bitches and rude - Patti LaBelle is not too far behind with her phoney ass.

Yeah, unfortunately,Aretha has always felt threatened by other female singers.Just a few years ago,she made a big deal when Beyonce referred to Tina Turner as "the queen" shrug I heard a story that she once saw Gladys Knight in an airport,Gladys said Hi but Aretha totally ignored her.

Beyonce know better than that shit, to call Tina Turner the Queen! shrug I'd have ignored her ass too.

Beyonce was wrong, but I think Aretha overreacted. It wasn't that big a deal shrug Aretha seems insecure/paranoid about her legacy, which makes no sense.Everyone knows that she is the undisputed Queen of Soul.

Teena Marie, the influential soul singer who set stages on fire with Rick James in the early '80s, shares her favorite memory of Luther Vandross.

"The last time I saw him [was when I was performing] in Los Angeles at the Forum three years ago," she said. "That night was magical. Everything that came out of my mouth, God touched me. When I came off the stage, the audience was screaming, next thing I knew I was up in the air. I was like, 'Oh my God, somebody is holding me up in the air.' I looked down and saw the face of Luther Vandross. He was like, 'Girl, you were up in the rafters!' He was just smiling. I was like, 'I've died and gone to heaven. I'm in the air, in the arms of Luther Vandross.' "

Kit, do tell about Anita!

Well, the stories I've heard about her reacting to fans in public when they see her walking in the mall or something. I was told they often receive the cold shoulder from her or are told outright she doesn't want to be bothered.

Anita can be very rude, showing up for shows and interviews several hours late and offering no excuses or apologies. My aunt went to one of her concerts recently. Anita takes the stage almost 3 hours past her scheduled time, acting as if there was nothing wrong.

I work for a local newspaper. A couple of years ago, she showed up over 2 hours late for an interview and when she finally arrived, she was acting like the ultimate diva, being nasty and very demanding.

And her general attitude about being better than a lot of people. Miki Howard did an interview a couple of years back and said when she won a Black Gold Award (remember those?) in the 80's, Anita stopped her back stage and informed her she better cherish that award because it was the only award she was ever gonna get!!! eek lol Now, mind you, she was right lol but I think that was a real bitchy thing to tell one of your contemporaries.

lol Your mother is funny. I can kind of see where people like our mothers are coming from concerning Anita's voice. To be honest, I don't know how well Luther's and Anita's voices would've meshed in these duets they were trying to have together but never came to fruition.

I'd be mean as hell too if I had to constantly perform and listen to those boring ass songs that she's made over the years. I can't stand Shitney because she's the first to ruin music, but actually, Anita Faker's music is much more boring than Shitney's.

btw,Luther was one cocky dude lol during his interviews,he made it clear that he was all that....lol...very confident.

"Truthfully, alot of other male singers are imitating me"---he made this comment in the late 80s.He didn't mention any names, but I know he was referring to Freddie Jackson.

In another interview from the late 80s (or early 90s),he talked about breaking attendance records at Wembley...

"I'm breaking the attendance records of artists who are supposedly bigger "crossover" acts than I am"---again,he didn't mention any names but I suspect he was referring to Prince, who had just played there a few months earlier.

Anita Baker was on a flight to a concert once and this guy I know was flying back to his hometown, where the concert was being held.
He and his wife were big Baker fans, so he approached Baker and told her that he was flying back home after being out of town for a business meeting and that he and his wife had tickets for her show that night.
He asked her for an autograph and she said, "No", she further added, "If I sign one for you, then I will have to sign one for evetbody else on this plane".
He replied, 'No one else asked you for your autograph".
