When I spoke to Kylie Minogue earlier this year about her upcoming US tour—the first in her 20-year career—she warned her usual arena-size stage show would have to be scaled down to fit the smaller venues she’d be playing over here. But she also made a promise: “There’ll still be the razzle-dazzle, don’t you worry. It’s not going to be me with a banjo.”

She wasn’t kidding.

Last night’s show at NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom was a two-hour post-disco fantasia of strobe, bass, and glitter—an all-out spectacle worthy of her American fans’ pent-up adoration. Barreling through her sizable songbook, Kylie stepped into a cast of personae—a wind-up space princess, a stomping glam rocker, a pouting screen siren—each with its own over-the-top costume and set decor. Seven jumbo screens pulsed background images for each number. Hits old (”Better the Devil You Know”), new (”Wow”), and soon-to-be (the upcoming single “Better Than Today”) whipped the audience into a sustained frenzy, while rose petals and confetti showered the stage at key moments.

But despite the glitz, this was no exercise in Spears-ian auto-pilot pop. The size of the venue demanded audience interaction, and Kylie happily chatted with the crowd throughout, taking requests for songs and dance moves from audience members who had queued up as early as 2am that morning to be front and center for the show. She lavished attention on her band, including a three-part horn section and two unfeasibly gorgeous backup singers. Fan-favorite ballads like “Confide in Me” and a stripped-down “I Believe in You” became a showcase her voice, a surprisingly solid soprano that usually gets glazed under thick layers of processing on her recordings.

And one thing was clear from the get-go: Minogue knows exactly whom she’s singing for. The opening number began with a brief instrumental medley of tunes from West Side Story, The Wizard of Oz, and The Sound of Music, and then segued into her 1994 hit “Light Years,” at which point the singer, dressed in a Mars Attack- style minidress and feather wrap, was lowered onto the stage atop a giant, metallic skull. The crowd—some still wearing pins from that morning’s National Equality March in Washington, DC—roared their approval, a warm NYC welcome twenty years in the making. It would be a shame to make them wait that long again.

Madonna looked like her young self at a Paper dinner honoring Pedro Almodovar and Penelope Cruz. Now that she's back in NYC, she is out and about. I heard, but can't confirm, she and Lola were at Kylie's show last night and that she smiled at Kylie's "Vogue" hat tip.

Nighty night: Kylie Minogue looks ready for bed as she steps out in her pyjama-esque trouser suit
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:54 PM on 12th October 2009

After performing four energetic concerts in the space of a week, you can't blame Kylie Minogue for feeling tired.
But as the Australian singer headed back to her hotel after her gig in New York last night, it looked like she was ready for bed.
The 41-year-old was spotted leaving the Hammerstein Ballroom wearing a polka-dot trouser suit, which looked remarkably like a pair of pyjamas.

Nightie night: Kylie Minogue looks like she's going to bed in her pyjama-esque trouser suit as she leaves the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City after her latest KylieUSA2009 concert

The pint-sized singer's petite figure was drowned by the baggy suit, resulting in a rare fashion faux pas for the normally stylish star.
Kylie jetted into the Big Apple over the weekend ahead of her three consecutive nights at the Hammerstein venue.
Enjoying Saturday night off before her first New York gig on Sunday, Kylie watched her sister Dannii Minogue on the X Factor.
After Dannii was criticised for appearing to make a snide comment about contestant Danyl Johnson's sexuality, Kylie leaped to her defence.
Writing on her Twitter micro-blogging page, Kylie said: 'Just off the phone with my little sis. Both she and Danyl are surprised by how much unnecessary attention her innocent comment has garnered.

Finally Stateside: Kylie Minogue performs on the opening night of her KylieUSA2009 tour in Oakland, California

Kylie appeared in the Judges' houses episode of the X Factor on October 3, in which she helped her sister choose her final three female singers.

Prior to her New York gig, Kylie has also performed in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, Oakland and Toronto on her first ever North American tour, entitled KylieUSA2009.
Kylie's tour has been well received by critics, who praised the singer for managing to perform energetic dances while singing live.

Variety writer Andrew Barker said: 'Her voice tends toward tinniness and lacks depth, yet she's obviously proficient and can hit some very big notes when required - and unlike many of her backing-track-assisted contemporaries, Minogue's vocals seemed to be entirely live.'
Billboard critic Keith Caulfield added: 'Let's be clear - this wasn't a lip-syncing showcase. Minogue sang live and was in fine voice throughout her set.
'She has repurposed some of the best moments from her previous globe-trotting outings for her first U.S. tour - thus giving American concertgoers a taste of what they've missed all these years.'
Kylie's costumes on her new tour come from the catwalk collections of Jean Paul Gaultier and Dolce And Gabbana.
Meanwhile, Kylie has been asked to return to Vegas after her one night show with the hope of extending it into a residency.
Her sister Dannii explained: 'She has now been asked to take the show back to Vegas and extend it as a residency over there - I'm so proud of her.'

New York Times
October 15, 2009
Music Review | Kylie Minogue
Coming in for a Landing After All These Years

By BEN RATLIFF
The Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue has been a very big banana in other parts of the world since the late 1980s. On Tuesday, at the Hammerstein Ballroom, she played the final date of what was, unbelievably, her first-ever North American tour. The tenor of the show was household-name; the fact of the show was cult-artist. This made the concert — efficient, clobbering, expensive, generous, drenched in film and costumes and dancing — close to an alternate reality.

It’s a long story, how she has remained apart from the American post-disco line, but it boils down to Europop’s absolute foreignness: there is no Bronx in it. Ms. Minogue has studied Madonna for years, but maybe this country needs only one blonde, stadium-filling, high-camp, digital-burlesque artist at a time and Lady Gaga — who draws from both Madonna and Ms. Minogue — has dibs on that spot.

Ms. Minogue’s voice never definitively dropped, like Madonna’s; she’s still comfortable in helium range. And while Madonna dealt in transgression nearly from the start, Ms. Minogue naturally circumvents the dark parts of desire. Between songs on Tuesday she was edgeless, posing no threat or subtext. She does enjoy-your-life music, no heavy message. And though you have an apparent advantage in connecting with it if you’re a gay man — the crowd at the Hammerstein was possibly 90 percent male — you’re free to make of it what you want.

Tuesday’s set went deep into disco, techno and various kinds of superpop, derivative but with champion hooks. (Ms. Minogue has released good songs throughout her career, including the recent Daft Punkish “In My Arms” and the thumping new song “Better Than Today.”) Champion stagecraft too. At the beginning she descended from the ceiling, wearing something like a string of feather boas and a solar-system headdress, standing atop an enormous shiny skull. Before long, after “Come Into My World,” a robot was high-stepping toward her, bearing a glass of red wine on a silver tray.

She had a live band, for what it’s worth — drums, bass, guitar and keyboards — though it all sounded like being inside a giant synthesizer. But her dancers, male and female, were invaluable. For “Shocked” they turned flips and cartwheels in front of exaggerated smiley faces on the back screen, looking like gym rats done up by Jean-Paul Gaultier; for “Boombox” (“Baby I’m your boombox/make you spin like a top”) they crept around in catcher’s masks; for “Slow” they performed interpretive gestures with neon-light tubes; for “Red Blooded Woman” the bare-chested men teased one another in front of shower stalls as Ms. Minogue posed on a gym beam. Please be seated: there’s more.

During “White Diamond” a footman approached Ms. Minogue, who was fretting glamorously on a couch flanked by panther statues, with some sort of dismaying note or book — again, on a silver tray; she flung him away and they did a routine of tension and release. For a stripper-dance version of “The Loco-Motion” the men dressed in female bondage gear and the women in flesh-colored body suits with pasties.

Ms. Minogue is effective in complex static poses, at one with her garments; at the start of “Like a Drug” she was shown on screen wearing something like an enormous doily, batting enormous eyelashes. But she was physical too, dancing as well as she could on high heels and walking more than once on the outstretched limbs of her dancers. And in the lovingly slow treatments of her biggest early hits, “The Loco-Motion” and “I Should Be So Lucky,” she used sufficient vibrato in her voice to assure you that she had one, a nearly intimate gesture after all the oversized ones. The concert was a stadium show intelligently compressed for 3,500 people, and that was why it worked.

It was awesome! I was pretty close so I got to see her in all her glory. Her costumes, shoes, hair, everything--just gorgeous! Her dancers... now I know why they say she has the best male dancers.

But the music and the costumes were great. I still wish I had a chance to absorb more of X prior to the show but I realized I was more familiar with the album than I thought. I also wish I could have seen her 4 or 5 years ago when Body Language was out...I still love After Dark. The little Vogue segment was great and loved the guys in those outfits.

I kept thinking America is so sleeping on her. Can’t believe it’s her first U.S. tour. I won't hesitate to see her again if she comes back.

Kylie X2008

and Kylie Showgirl:Homecoming
http://www.amazon.com/Whi...140&sr=1-1

are what the For You For Me was based on. So if you enjoyed the tour you'd love those.

I LOVE Showgirl Homecoming and X2008 probably my favorite tours of hers.

Than there is the Legendary KylieFever02 Tourhttp://www.amazon.com...243&sr=1-1

It was the first time she toured with Projection screens i'd say this was my favorite but i hate the Choreography

I have a special place for all of her tours starting with On A Night Like This where she started referencing Dr Who. When I was little my brother and I would watch Dr Who with my grandpa.

my bottom two tours of this decade are Showgirl:Greatest Hits which has HORRIBLE costumes and the enjoy level is a bit low. but to Kylie's defense the show was filmed 3 days before she found out she had cancer
http://www.amazon.com/Sho...407&sr=1-1

and On A Night Like This cause it's production value is lower it's a let down after we see what she does now.
http://www.amazon.com/Kyl...480&sr=1-1
Though on this tour she debuted Can't Get You Out of My Head

make sure your DVDs are Region 1 and NTSC or they won't play stateside.
