This is definitely a factor as well. However, I still think that there is something to the American mainstream rejecting dance music. I can count only 10 or so pure dance songs that have been hits on the Billboard Hot 100 over the past 10 years. Kylie's had quite a few "hits" on the US Dance charts over the years, but only a few of those have gone on to mainstream success:

I Should Be So Lucky: #10 Dance (#28 Hot 100)
Locomotion: #12 Dance (#3 Hot 100)
Butterfly: #14 Dance (-)
Can't Get You Out of My Head: #1 Dance (#7 Hot 100)
Love At First Sight: #1 Dance (#23 Hot 100)
Come Into My World: #20 Dance (#91 Hot 100)
Slow: #1 Dance (#91 Hot 100)
I Believe in You: #3 Dance (-)
All I See: #3 Dance (-)

nod

but people also have to realize that there are different styles to dance music.
and a lot of what people in America consider 'dance' music is nothing more than just a pop song in Europe. Kylie has a more disco feel (if you will), while in American they prefer something with a harder edge. i.e. house style. i think that is why Can't Get You Out Of My Head and it's infectious bassline was the perfect song to get her across the pond. However her promotion and follow through was lacking. Madonna emerged at a time where disco was considered dead yet people needed someone to fill a void for discoteques. there was no one like her and she also became a voice of sorts for young girls, club heads, gays, and others that may not have had an icon or representative in the mainstream.

i understand some of the comparisons, but i also feel both of them stand very much on their own. they've both expressed admiration for eachothers work and sem to be constantly attending eachothers shows. lol. Kylie's North American tour tickets sold like fire. she definitely has the chance to make it big in the states, but needs to learn how to strike while the iron's still hot and not luke warm. Anastacia are you listening? lol

what happened to Anastacia?!?

i lived with Moonbeam. i've sat through enough Kylie videos. lol i'm not going to do it here. and yeah, it's disappointing that Madonna seems to be settling for imitating her imitators, but well, whatever....

lol... they are both great. Madge was my girl until i rediscovered Kylie.

lol nothing. like her north american career. giggle

i'm just saying; she's been hugely successful in other territories but not in her home country. she was wondering why she's not cracked the U.S. market. shrug

i think some artists need to learn humilty as well. just because you are a superstar in one country does not automatically make you an icon in another.
you have to do the WORK. that's why i get tired of the Madonna vs. Kylie thing.
regardless of what people think of Madonna, she worked for her career and contuinues to. performing at a small club 25 years into her career to create a buzz for an album is not beneath her. yet others who barely have a hit in some countries expect that they should be a house hold name. the fans owe you nothing. you owe them. they write your cheque so do your job basically. lol

while Americans have a lot of stigmas when it comes to music and who they consider worthy of being played, the same can be said for other countries and groups of people.

i remember hearing Locomotion and I should be So Lucky and instantly falling in love. and reading my music bible at the time Smash Hits. lol Kylie was in it on a weekly basis. i still have some stashed away.

this is what bugs me when i hear people ask why Kylie or someone like Robbie Williams aren't big in the US.

why should they be? they and their labels put absolutely no effort into breaking into the US market. maybe they don't need it. maybe they aren't that interested. maybe it's an inferiority complex on their part. whatever it is, if they aren't going to bother, why should I?

nod "Heavy Rotation"
and a good album it was. she said it would be released in the states and that a small U.S. tour would follow in late 2009. so unless 2009 is being extended i think it's a done deal. lol. and she's doing shows now with Lulu (i think) and Chaka Khan. i think it's called something like girls night out or ladies night. can't remember or be arsed to look it up at the moment. lol

It's very simple. Neighbours was not big in America. She's only big in countries where Neighbours was big. If you don't know about Neighbours, Wikipedia should fill you in.

That may be true for people my age as I first heard of and loved her in Neighbours and The Henderson Kids, but I've been to 5 Kylie concerts and the age range is very mixed. The 12 year olds in the audience weren't even alive when she was a known actress. They weren't even alive when she was in Streetfighter!

Saying Kylie is only big in places where Neighbours is/was popular is like saying Janet Jackson only has fans because of Good Times/Diff'rent Strokes.

Ooh, maybe. I just uploaded my old Kylie "The Videos" VHS bits from the 80s. I transferred them to DVD a while ago and it looks like no-one else had put them online. Very Disney-esque. Apologies for the grainy quality but that's what 20 year old video cassettes do

sad
