The Police > Sting
Morrissey > The Smiths Therefore, The Police.

The Smiths spoke to kids and teens a way that the police couldn't even fathom. In the long run the smiths will only grow more popular and more iconic. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Lyrics that attracted me to THE SMITHS
There's a club, if you'd like to go You could meet somebody who really loves you So you go, and you stand on your own And you leave on your own And you go home, and you cry And you want to die This reminded me of how dramatic I could sometimes be. Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head And as I climb into an empty bed Oh well, enough said I know it's over - still I cling I don't know where else I can go MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! The police / sting are what middle aged white women listen to.

This is easy.
The Smiths - by a landslide. I can't stand Sting... His weird fake Jamaican singing voice. His sanctimonious rainforest wankery. His dyed yellow hair. His horrible jazz records which are basically him playing a double bass instead of an electric bass. His smug car advert from a few years ago. His shit Disney movie song with Rod Stewart and Bryan fucking Adams. I hate him!!!

The Police were more for the popular kids that wanted to be cool while The Smiths were for the kids that were never considered cool.
Smiths for me. I was never cool.

Smiths for me. I was never cool. I always thought that the fans of the smiths were 'cool' but the type of cool that you couldn't just run out and buy a pair of docmartin's to achieve.

Has to be The Smiths, by, as a few orgers have said, a country mile. I disagree that The Police were more versatile - I think they ranged from reggae-lite to faster-reggae-lite to even-faster-slightly-punky-reggae-lite This is not an exit

Horrible, horrible comparison. What next? George Michael Vs David Bowie?
While The Police have a few cool songs The Smiths deposit daffodils down on them from quite a height.

It IS apples and oranges, frogs and grandmothers. I think that's what makes this comparison fun. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I've always said that I find listening to Morrissey to be like spending the evening with my brother in law. For the first five minutes, he seems clever & charming. After 1/2 an hour his witticisms are starting to sound a little tired & I'm beginning to wish he'd shut up. By the end of the evening I'm usually plotting out murder scenarios in my head.
I'm no fan of either band, but I'd much rather listen to the Police.

ok, honestly, I have to go with the Smiths and by a very wide margin.
I love these songs: ASK The little rythim guitar rif that Johny Marr does is just infectious and wonderful. It adds the perfect vibe to an already charming little pop tune. The only thing that comes close from the Police catalogue, to me, is the Bass part of Every Breath You Take. Now I do like the Police a great deal, and think Sting was a fine solo artist, but I just don't think their songs come close to the Smiths. How Soon Is Now Drama Queen!! But its a song that teenagers like myself latched on to and just adored completely. I remember playing that song possibly 20 times one day. Just loving it to death! We used to dance to this at the wee hours of the night absorbed in an almost trancelike state on darkenned dancefloors....spiritual. There is a Light This sums up my 19th year of age. Everything about the song touched me. There is nothing subtle or intellectual about this. Its simply, foolishly, desperate. I love this song. Essentially, I can listen to The Queen is Dead and Meat is Murder over and over again from front to back. I can't do that with the Police, and can only do that with one of Stings album's (the Soul Cages). This is not to say that the Smiths are technically a better band--I'm not musically inclined enough to know. But I don't listen to music to trip out on chord progressions and time signatures. I listen to it because it touches and moves me. And for this, the Smiths reign supreme....above even Prince to me. I even prefer them when they're compared to their often spoken of rivals "The Cure".

I agree. I can't describe how meaningful this band was to me at the time. None other could even come close. They spoke to me. In fact, I spent a couple years there where the ONLY band I would listen to was the Smiths.
