Celebration makes big move on US iTunes
America is really liking the new Madonna single. Celebration is now #22 on US iTunes today (Wednesday 05 August) - a big jump from #55 yesterday. If this momentum continues Madonna could make an impressive debut on Billboard HOT 100. LOVE ♪♫♪♫ ♣¤═══¤۩۞۩ஜ۩ஜ۩۞۩¤═══¤♣

The mixture of guitar, electronica, and orchestral arrangements is great. The songs are tender, introspective. It reminds me so much of the Music album -- that quiet, experimental approach. I love when Madonna doesn't "do Madonna", and I love this kind of spare work from her a lot more than the gloss and blend of Confessions and Hard Candy.Of course, I do love to hear her bust out with a great dance tune, but I respect the fact that she can subvert her own artistic canon. I really loved this album when it came out but these days,I rarely listen to it.I appreciate the artistic "seriousness" of it and I love it when artists (especially pop artists) dig deeper and get all spiritual/reflective/introspective.It can be an intriguing ride. However, this album can be depressing at times. There's only one tune that can truly be called a dance number ("Nobody Knows Me") and even that song is a little too preachy and self-righteous.'Ray Of Light' is a serious, emotionally heavy album but the music is still uptempo and vibrant, with many solid dance tracks throughout. On 'American Life',the melodies and beats are somber and low-key,which you don't expect on a Madonna album. On the other hand, you can't dance and party all the time,so I can see where Madonna was coming from. Admittedly, I haven't spent much time with it. But it completely threw me off guard! Not what I expected! It's kind of exciting to discover something new. And being a Cure, Smiths, Radiohead, Tori Amos fan, I'm no stranger to depressing. I'll see how I feel about it over time.

put together a really quick version of a 2-disc greatest hits collection in iTunes. I was trying to be realistic with what you could conceivably call a "greatest hits" based on the biggest hits and what you might conceivably still hear on the radio from time to time. it's based on U.S. hits. it becomes more apparent that 2 discs just aren't enough, especially if more recent material is going to be presented fairly in comparison to the massive 80's & 90's hits.
single versions, of course.... and I didn't include the new songs because there isn't a chance in hell that either of them are going to be US hits. this is, if i was pressed to do it, what I would make for a non-fan or casual fan that wanted no more than 2 discs worth of material and just wanted the hits. Thanks. No more rumors. I want the real thing...and I want "Who's that Girl" on there! I ask for only two things. Original "Into The Groove" and "Who's That Girl"...not a whole lot to ask, is it? I'll gripe a little if "Erotica" is under represented or if they overdue it on the later albums (they are almost bound to include three songs from "Ray of Light" even though it only had two really big US hits BTW, I'm starting to go so crazy that I'm trying to read the lyrics for the song before "Like A Prayer" (the title is featured prominently in the promo video) to see if it is "Who's That Girl"! What an underrated album. It was very cheap at Borders so I bought a second copy (which I swear I'll never do again). One of my favorites of all time with "Erotica". As much as I love Madonna, none of her other albums are really that up there in terms of all time favorites even though they all have highlights. She's never made an album I really didn't like at all.

La Isla Bonita is on there. sorry, skipped it for some reason when I was typing this up. as for Angel and Causing A Commotion, I left them off because even though they were big hits at the time, they were really only hits because the world was caught up in Madonna mania and haven't stuck around in the public consciousness. I'd still hear them on the radio occasionally 15 years ago, but not any more. (admittedly, I haven't listened to a lot of radio in over 10 years, but I do once in awhile). Keep It It Together and Rain are ones I still hear occasionally. KIT seems to be a perennial favorite with muzak stations (I hear this in McDonalds a lot for some reason). and I chose You Must Love Me because it was new, it's less specifically tied to Evita, isn't a "cover" per se, etc. plus, DCFMA made the last set, but YMLM still pops up on AC radio and shows like Delilah, etc.... all in all, if you're whittling it down to 2 discs, you've got to draw the line somewhere and I went with what I imagine would be on something like a 2 disc "The Essential Madonna" that might pop up in 5 years sans new tracks, etc. i don't envy whoever has to pick what goes on Celebration.
