"IS BEYONCE THE HEIR APPARENT TO MICHAEL JACKSON?"

According to Dayo Olopade at "The Root," Beyonce is the heir apparent to Michael Jackson.

The two weeks since Michael Jackson’s death have been awash in tributes and testimonies to the man and his music. Yet the tide of nostalgia and revisionism that has gripped the entire planet obscures a nagging truth: The very idea of superstardom may have died with Michael. After all, so many of the eulogies have focused less on Jackson’s iconic music than on his extraordinary fame, his status as ruler of a kingdom called Pop. He won this crown with a fusion of precocious talent and gleefully bizarre antics—the thrilling 1983 moonwalk at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and the shocking 2005 baby-dangle in Berlin contribute equally to the idea of Michael as spectacle.

Jackson’s omnipresence during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s—from prison yards to bar mitzvah scenes—extended his cultural wingspan, eventually reaching fashion, film and kids like myself who weren't even born when “Thriller” dropped. For our generation, the death of the “Man in the Mirror” only exposes the sorry state of contemporary music, and begs the question: Who's next?

I've got one word: Beyoncé. It used to be two words, but such are the heights the 27-year-old from Houston has scaled in a career that has already spanned two decades. Say what you will about her scantily clad BET tribute to Michael—she is the only living performer to even approximate Jackson's blend of talent and cultural clout. Yes, she's a woman; but her work ethic, daring musical choices and chameleonic artistic presence makes her more of an heir to the Gloved One than any man out there. The fact that she is already one of the most famous people on the planet only adds to the case for passing her the torch.

The synergy between Michael Jackson and Beyoncé Knowles is not just a matter of their biographies—but it's a good starting point. We know the story: Thrust into showbiz while still in rompers, Knowles entered the entertainment industry in earnest as the 9-year-old lead of girl group Destiny's Child. As early as Jackson was charming Motown executives and mid-century television bandleaders, she was singing lead and navigating both a “Momager” and “Dadager” in the forms of pushy Mathew and Tina Knowles. While her rearing was considerably less scarring than the abusive, exploitative relationship that Jackson maintained with his father Joe, Knowles entered her teens steeled with the same tireless work ethic many saw in a young Jackson. In an interview from the early days of Destiny’s Child, bandmates describe her as “the serious one” and “the overseer of it all.”

But like Jackson’s controversial 1977 decision to break up the band of brothers then performing as “The Jacksons,” Knowles gave the people what they wanted and strode into her 20s as a solo artist. Her freshman effort, Dangerously in Love, was a bit of a gamble: The summer before the LP was released, even her handlers weren’t sure that she could hack it on her own. The album had been slated for the fall of 2003, to give audiences a chance to absorb the odd sound of the first single, “Crazy in Love,” released in February. It wasn't necessary. The infectious hook and horns, from a 1970 Chi-Lites song, “Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So),” produced a sound completely unexpected in mainstream pop or R&B. Audiences went wild for the blend of Jackson-era funk and contemporary dance pop. The verse from then-boyfriend Jay-Z was the icing on the wax. Her studio promptly moved up the album release date.

At times, her aesthetic choices are inexplicable—nobody asked Ms. Knowles to frolic in a human-sized champagne glass, play with a ball of yarn or spin through a beachy marsh wearing what can only be described as a grass skirt tutu. And no one insisted that she wear motorcycle handlebars as a bustier. But Jackson’s style was equally outrageous—and like Michael, she doesn't really seem to care about convention. The singer has been seen flashing a custom-made metal glove around town, and in the series of videos accompanying her third solo album, I am...Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé has done for pantsless outerwear what Michael did for epaulets. “Diva” is all angles and attitude, and in her avant garde new video for “Sweet Dreams," she wears a gold-plated bodysuit, with Annie Lenox-style cropped hair. There is no Bubbles the chimp—only Jay-Z and the occasional alligator—but the costumery hasn't fallen far from the Michael Jackson glam-rock tree.

But what makes Beyoncé the most plausible living heir to the pop monarchy is the magnitude of her fame. Michael Jackson’s legacy is special precisely because he was famous for young and old, rich and poor, black and white—on six inhabited continents. Beyoncé’s musical reach is not nearly as large (frat boys look, but don't buy). However, like Jackson, her cultural impact extends beyond music, to the realms of fashion, film and beauty. Sasha Frere-Jones of The New Yorker wrote that she “is creating a new kind of supersized music, a triumphalist pop that makes its point through magnitude as much as style.” And that was before she spent more weeks at No. 1 than any female this decade, sold out a national tour this summer, or carried the schlocky stalker flick Obsessed to a $28.5 million, No. 1 opening weekend.

Like MJ in The Wiz and Francis Ford Coppolla's pricey epic Captain EO, Knowles’ acting has been widely panned. But the point is that she’s out there. Countless talented female singers—from ‘60s talents such as Wendy Rene and Ann Peebles to ‘70s giants such as Diana Ross and Tina Turner—have laid the track for how to revel in the spotlight. And Knowles, whose vocal talents are not the best of her generation, has been training for this fame triathlon ever since her parents strapped on that first pair of sparkly disco pants. Between makeup endorsements and PSAs for hunger, Beyoncé has become a business, man.

Want proof? She has fans in high places. Jackson paid four visits to the White House over the years. But the first daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, begged to attend a Beyoncé show in Washington. And at the nationally televised concert preceding Barack Obama’s inauguration as president, Knowles was the de facto headliner—beating out other boldface names such as Garth Brooks, Mary J. Blige and Bon Jovi. Even the president was spotted waving his palm back and forth, in echoes of “Single Ladies.” And of course, Knowles sang “At Last” for the new president and his wife at the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball that evening.

In 2009, it's Knowles' willingness to use the first person pronoun that distinguishes her from Jackson—who, even at the peak of fame was retiring, self-effacing, and, as Brooke Shields pointed out at his memorial, eager to be teased. The Destiny’s Child catalogue, however, much of which Knowles wrote—“Survivor,” “Independent Women” and “Lose My Breath” (can you keep up?)—suggests a level of confidence that Jackson never had. Her recent video, for the single “Ego,” follows that trend as well. “I like to think that I was created for a special purpose,” she declares, clad in the fishnets and Diana Ross get-up. “I don’t need a beat; I can sing it with piano."

Her vocal range and clarity may not be quite as large as her desire to entertain, but having the guts to perform anyway is what Knowles and Jackson have in common. Even at his most frail and supposedly drug-ridden, Jackson’s instinct was to get back onstage this summer, to win back the love that had been lost or forgotten in the years he retreated into the demons created by fame. He couldn’t make it. But as one of the hardest working folks in show business, Beyoncé can and should step into that spotlight

Long live the queen.

HELL NO

Beyonce agrees' she is not the HEIR to Jacko!!!

I'm not saying Beyonce is a bad singer, she is quite good when you compare her to the most of the weak singers on the charts, but she isn't that strong either!

The way people make a big deal out of her, she may be seen as a legend in 2-3 decades! LOL
I really hope that doesn't happen, unless she does something to deserve it.

Bouncy better than Jennifer Hudson & Christina????? In what universe? lol

I know, right? LOL! Beyonce's singing just does not leave an impression. She goes through her scales and whatnot and it sounds nice and forgettable. I haven't always liked how Christina uses her voice, but she has a gift and she's learning how to use it better. Christina's "Porgy & Bess" puts anything I've heard from Beyonce's to shame. And Jennifer? LOL! Forget about it. Beyonce would've never made it this far if she had to rely solely on her voice. She doesn't have it like that. Beyonce succeeds because she's the jack of all trades, master of none. And like I said, she's exhausting her capital on weak material.

Yeah, sorry, but that Shanice is incredibly annoying. Halo isn't supposed to be sung at a snail's pace and it isn't supposed to have all those falsetto ad libs (there's some yes, but not THAT many gawd).

Monica? falloff

Jennifer Hudson? They're level, in my opinion. I couldn't choose one over the other. I love them both.

Christina? falloff She can sing, duh, but she can't, or doesn't want to, just sing beautiful melodies. She wants to BELT every goddamn time and it's so aggravating. Listen to "Hurt", sung normally, it could've been beautiful. But instead she shows no concept of restraint and goes gung ho for the chorus and most of the middle eight, completely ruining any chance at emotional effect and almost venturing towards melodrama.

Yes, Halo is a BIG song, but Beyonce shows restraint and variation in the verses and only really gets loud for the second part of the chorus (i can see your HALOOOO).

I guess it's all a matter of whether you judge who can sing by who can belt or who can vary it up AND belt. Belting is no doubt the measurement for most people, but for me it's more about the whole voice, not just the volume or strength.

That goes for pretty much all 4 of my favourite artists:

Beyonce - as above
Prince - dude probably has the most varied voice in pop music
MJ - as above
Britney - listen to "Unusual You" then "Amnesia" then "Boys" - huge variation, even if her voice is weak and she's unfortunately stopped singing live.

I haven't completely listened to I Am Sasha Fierce yet, and while I agree there are some mindless songs on there, that's not necessarily a bad thing. I definitely prefer the "Beyonce" side of the CD though.

Bey just has more public (over)exposure because she's more willing to tramp herself up for the cameras on the majority of her videos instead of letting her voice really sell her music as apposed to her body.

Halo? If I Were A Boy? Broken Hearted Girl? Hell, even Sweet Dreams isn't that bad...

Anyway, Beyonce HAS the voice so what's wrong with adding sex appeal to it as well? It's up to the audience to recognise the good from the bad and they did that with Halo. Single Ladies was only big because the dance was easy to learn.

Regarding Shanice and Monica, I have to say different strokes for different folks because I think both of their voices are extremely good. Monica's first album is faar better than anything Beyonce has ever put out and that album came out 14 years ago. Her vocals on that album are fabulous and it's a great album from beginning to end...one of the few that I can actually listen to without hitting the skip button.

Shanice is singing 'Halo' acapella in that clip so she kinda has to add all those extra ad libs because the song has a number of breaks in it where there's a lot of instrumental. Shanice's vocal range is waay bigger than Beyonce's. Beyonce can't hit a high note like that....hell, Mariah can barely hit high notes like that nowadays. Her vocal control is very good too, but these are things that I take into consideration before I start calling someone a 'great vocalist'. Beyonce is a very good vocalist, but she still has a long ways to go before I would call her 'great', but she's definitely up there. nod

Honestly, 'Halo' is probably the only song off of that album that I can stand. 'I Am Sasha Fierce' really isn't different from her two previous solo albums. For me, it's the weakest of the 3...I own her first two (only bought 'B-Day' because I like the song 'Hollywood' and it was only $5 at Wal-mart because they had soo many of them they had to get rid of them somehow I guess shrug) and refuse to buy this one because, like I stated, I only can stand 'Halo'. I still think her first album is the only good album she really has. I don't think there's anything wrong with a little sex appeal, but sometimes she goes waay over-board with it and it distracts from her voice which a real vocalist shouldn't do...yes, Christina Aguilera was in that position at one point for me too and I agree with you that she has a tendency to over-do it sometimes, but when she doesn't...my Lord, her voice is absolutely outstanding. A little bit is more than enough when you have the actual talent to truly carry yourself.

In the end, I still think that Jennifer Hudson is faar better than Beyonce is and I can't wait for her next album to come out. She's phenomenal. mushy

lol Daddy Knowles had those girls running while singing into microphones before they hit the big time so I know Beyonce's voice isn't weak; but to say her voice is stronger than Jennifer Hudson or Christina Aguilera is really pushing it. They both have much bigger ranges than Beyonce so of course their voices are going to be stronger than hers. This is a readily documented fact. There are several websites dedicated to deciphering singer's vocal abilities.

According to many different goggled sources on this subject, Jennifer is rockin' a 5 octave range and Beyonce is at approximately 3.5 octaves, but I've read 2 octaves on a few sites. Christina is a solid 4 octaves. Mariah is 5 octaves and Whitney is listed as 3 octaves in some places and 5 in others. Britney has a 2.5 octave range according to this list from an old .org thread:

http://prince.org/msg/8/264879

If you're going to measure a vocalist, octave range is usually where you'd start and Christina and Jennifer have Beyonce beat in that department. Beyonce is still a good vocalist though, because sometimes it's just as much a skill to be able to make your range sound bigger than it actually is and Beyonce does that very well, because I thought her range would be much higher than it is.

Honestly, she can sing all day if it keeps her from talking...her speaking voice drives me nuts (Mariah's too). They sound like they have frogs stuck in their throats...makes my throat hurt just thinking about their interviews. Unfortunately, I am often subjected to her speaking voice during almost every commercial brake since she insists on endorsing soo many products...can't escape this chick unless I give up radio and TV which really sucks because I like those two things very much. disbelief

I didn't say Beyonce is better than Christina, Jennifer or even Monica, she can sing her ass off but that doesn't mean she is the best vocalist ever. And I disagree with the ass shaking making people interested in her. I always loved her for her ballads and slow tempos as early as when she was with dc-3 and I was so sure that when she went solo, she would bring back an old school funk sound or be a balladeer like mariah or whitney, but she went the shit-hop route and I was very disappointed with her first solo album though Crazy in Love and Naughty Girl grew on me. I like the joints on B'Day better, they had better melodies and all, but with time, I think her ballads aged better, and the dance stuff sounds dated now and too contemporary and forgetful. I like the ballads on the I Am Beyonce disc, I only like about 3 songs on the Sasha disc, and I'm very embarrassed for her for Diva.

No, it's not. You just don't like her.

Liking an artist really has nothing to do with what their octave range is recorded and labeled as being. I love Beyonce the vocalist (otherwise I wouldn't have spent my money on her last two albums like I had originally posted), but Beyonce the artist, as a whole, I really just think is okay but nothing new or spectacular JMHO. Beyonce's octave range really isn't something to laugh at, but it's not the same range as Christina's and Jennifer's.

You getting mad at me about something that has been documented by audio researchers is baseless and childish really. I didn't make up those octave range figures, obviously someone who is actually skilled in vocal mechanics measured them and documented them. I'm just the messanger. You getting pissy with me is like people who yell at the waiter if the food is bad. Waiters don't cook; they just put the food in front of you, so it's pretty ignorant to get angry with them if the food isn't tasty, but some people just like to exhibit low IQs and yell at the closest person to them when something doesn't go their way and those people always seem to give me a good chuckle with their little hissy fits. lol

I'll repost that other link for you also, since it seems that reading a post thoroughly and without bias doesn't seem to be one of your stronger suits:

*I don't know where this .orger got his/her facts, so orgnot them and maybe they can give you another link to help your in your quest for music knowledge.

Okay, now where's your links to prove otherwise since that would be the only response at this time that I will even consider to be valid and acceptable? Like I originally posted, there's this great search engine called 'google' that you can just type in the question: "What is Beyonce's (Christina's, Jennifer Hudson's, whoever's name) octave range?". Self-motivation is pretty important to me because otherwise I see a person as being lazy, so check out 'google' if these TWO links aren't good enough for you.

WTF? How sad and pathetic does your life have to be for a stranger's voice to annoy you? I'm seriously laughing my ass off here.

lol There are lots of PUBLIC FIGURES who have annoying speaking voices, many of them not singers. Seriously, what kind of vapid, juvenile question was that? confused You mean to tell me that you think that everyone in the public eye has a nice speaking voice?...falloff Wow, you are really accepting, which is a joke really because you always seem to be hating on Christina's vocal abilities every chance you get. Fran Drescher's ('The Nanny') voice drives me bananas also and she's not a singer. Joan Rivers and Barbara Walters can get a little annoying for me also after listening to them for long periods of time, but that doesn't mean I think they aren't very talented women. I just have to take them in small doses.

E81: "They sound like they have frogs stuck in their throats...makes my throat hurt just thinking about their interviews. Unfortunately, I am often subjected to her speaking voice during almost every commercial brake since she insists on endorsing soo many products...can't escape this chick unless I give up radio and TV which really sucks because I like those two things very much." disbelief

PS: "What a terrible life you lead. You poor poor thing. Ever heard of a mute button?"

What a terrible life I lead? lol Why because I'm on a forum discussing singing abilities with other people also discussing singing abilities..and I have provided links to state my case? It's a forum all based on each person's personal opinions. Some people put links to help prove their points and some choose not to and want to just take the easy way out by throwing out derogatory statments that have no substance and are borderline imbecilic.

If someone is going to argue with me, their comeback had better include some valid evidence to prove me wrong otherwise it's really like arguing with a child to me and becomes just amusing and quite humourous really. So, since I know I'm not going to get a mature response from you, I'm done with this latest conversation because I don't have time to argue with people who don't seem to want to do the research and give me an intelligent reply. It's beneath me; it really is, so peace and keep hatin' on Christina if it makes you smile. wink

Under certain circumstances, urgent circumstances, desperate circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer.

That's the Hollywood way. Talk shit about the living then praise them when they're dead. All these celebrities jumping on the "Oh I Loved Michael" bandwagon probably wouldn't have loaned him $5.00 when he was alive.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

lowkey

what do beyonce being able to sing have to do with the ridiculous article calling her the 'heir' to mj? people do realize that generations of music fans have grown up listening to mj right? i really dont think my lil 8 year old nieces who listen to beyonce today will have their kids dancing to all the single ladies 20 years from now. lets also not forget that beyonce is damn near 30 (some believe she's past 30) and imo has already enjoyed her peak. beyonce is ok i guess for a current pop star but im not impressed, she hasnt done anything special to me. i hope people realize there aint gonna be no more michael jacksons and stop he madness.
