Sky News understands that, after years of rumours, Michael Jackson has finally agreed to perform a string of concerts in London this summer.
The 50-year-old will end his exile as a live performer by staging a residency at the 02 Arena this summer, in one of the biggest comebacks in pop history.
While the exact dates of the shows are yet to be revealed, Sky sources say that Jackson has exchanged contracts with the venue and is now committed to return to live performance.

The first dates of the concerts will be confirmed at a press conference on Thursday at the 02 and it's understood the star may appear there to make the announcement.

A small number of shows will be released initially but more dates will go on sale, emulating Prince's successful 21 night stay at the venue in 2006, if interest in the shows is as high as promoters expect.

It seems inevitable that the concerts, which sources say are the only live shows he is planning, will sell out instantly but what is never certain with Michael Jackson is his behaviour.
In his prime he was unquestionably one of the all time greats: a sublime singer, a thrilling dancer and a songwriter whose gifts were such that he wrote the highest selling album of all time in Thriller.
However, that peak was a long time ago.

Since the 80s Jackson has appeared to be increasingly damaged in every area of his life.
The surgery has robbed him of his looks, the eccentricities have robbed him of his cool, the recurrent child abuse allegations (all of which he was cleared of any wrongdoing) and the money worries have clearly taken a huge toll.
When Jackson last appeared in London at the World Music Awards in 2006 he was able only to mime to a few bars of We Are The World before leaving the stage.
And when he appeared in public in Las Vegas just before his 50th birthday last August he looked weaker than ever, dressed in pyjama trousers he appeared gaunt and frail.
It's long been said that Jackson's health was the main reason that he had not agreed to stage a comeback tour, with various rumours surrounding the reason for his weight loss.

Whether he has been able to work on his fitness to sustain a residency will be one of the key questions ahead of this series of dates.
But it may be that Michael Jackson's finances are now in such a state of disrepair that quite simply has no choice but to go back to work.
The gates of Neverland have closed, the possessions from his fairytale home are to be auctioned and he has had to turn to various sources for loans.
If he were to emulate Prince's record residency at the 18,000 capacity 02 Arena then he could play to an estimated half a million fans, which are according to some experts could generate in theory up to £50m.

If he will be able to repair his finances or his reputation through this residency remains to be seen but there is no doubt it will be fascinating to watch him.
Whether it's a car crash or a triumph as always with the former child star it will undoubtedly be compelling.
Many will be astonished just to see him back on a stage and cynics will say, regardless of contracts, that there is plenty of time for Jackson to have second thoughts before he steps out on the stage of Britain's biggest arena.

Ultimately, as with all the greats, what remains is the sheer quality of the music and Jackson's best work is up there with the greatest musicianship of the 20th century.
If Jackson can reclaim just a little of his genius to do them justice then this residency would be the most unlikely of triumphs. We shall see.

It's about damn time there was an official thread for MJ. If MJ does perform again, then cool but hopefully he won't make fans spend their life savings trying to see the man. He should know that we are all in a recession and times is hard out here. Something tells me that he doesn't give a fuck.

Michael Jackson will take up residency at the O2 in London this summer in one of the biggest comebacks in pop history.

Michael, 50, will end his exile as a live performer with a residency at the London arena, similar to that of Prince who spent 21 nights there in 2007.

The dates of the shows are as yet unknown but Michael has exchanged contracts with the venue, according to Sky News.
There will only be tickets available for a small number of shows initially and then more dates will be added if demand is as great as expected.

The residency is tipped to be the only live shows the King of Pop is planning so tickets are expected to sell out in record time and if he follows in Prince's footsteps at the 18,000 capacity O2 he could play to an estimated half a million fans.

MICHAEL Jackson is this week expected to announce a string of summer dates at The O2, Greenwich.

The exact dates for the Greenwich shows are to be unveiled at a press conference at The O2 on Thursday, at which it is also rumoured the star will make a personal apperance.

It has been predicted the concerts will resemble Prince’s 21-date residency at the venue and be the only shows Jackson plays this year.

It follows months of speculation about a string of money-spinning shows. Jackson last performed in 2006, at the World Music Awards in London.

But he disappointed fans at that event by singing just a few lines of We Are The World. He last toured 12 years ago.

The O2, in Greenwich, south-east London, is the venue where Prince played for 21 nights in 2007, and where Britney Spears is performing for eight nights in June.

Jackson would be likely to follow a similar pattern of a run of gigs at one venue, rather than an extensive tour.

At Thursday's press conference, he will hope to convince fans he is fit enough to perform a number of full shows.

His last substantial series of concerts came in 1996 and '97, when he played 82 shows in 58 cities as part of the HIStory tour. His last album of original material came out in 2001.

Stories about personal, health and financial problems have circulated in recent years, and he was cleared of child abuse after a four-month trial in 2005.

The singer is selling many of the contents of his former Neverland ranch at auction in Los Angeles next month.

But with classic releases like Thriller - the world's best-selling album - plus Bad and Off the Wall, he is the most successful entertainer of all time, according to Guinness World Records, and retains a huge global fan base.

The press conference will end fevered speculation that the King of Pop plans to make an explosive comeback by staging a series of concerts in the British capital, according to Sky News.
A source tells WENN Jackson was due to land at a London airport at 2pm (GMT) on Tuesday (03Mar09) and will appear in person at the press conference to make the announcement.
The Thriller hitmaker's last major tour was in 1996, and his most recent album, Invincible, was released eight years ago in 2001.
Reports have suggested the residency could pull in $214.5 million (£150 million) - netting the star a mammoth $7.15 million (£5 million) pay cheque per show.
It is believed revenue from the residency will help Jackson's waning fortune - he was forced to sell his beloved Neverland Ranch to a private equity firm last year (08) after falling behind on the $3 million (£2.1 million)-per-year running costs.
The string of shows will trump fellow pop superstar Prince's stint at the venue in 2007, which saw the Purple Rain legend sell-out the O2 for 21 dates...
