Rock & Roll Hall of Fame---who will be the nominees for 2009?

I just read an article in USAToday where they predicted that these artists will be the nominees....

Bon Jovi
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Cyndi Lauper
K.D.Lang
Billy Bragg
Slayer

The FutureRockHall site have just made their own predictions (last year, they correctly predicted seven of the nine nominees)....
http://www.futurerockhall...ctions.php

Chic
The Stooges
Metallica
The Hollies
Beastie Boys
Run-DMC
Kraftwerk
Donna Summer

What do you think? Who should be nominated this time? You can find that USA Today article elsewhere on the site I mentioned.

I think BON JOVI is a shoe in, without a doubt. they have alot of respect in the industry now, to survive that "hair band" label and their success worldwide, 130 million sold, already inducted in the Brit hall of fame, you mine as well not even have a vote for this band, theyre in. Outside of that Metallica and of course those who missed last year like Chic,Donna Summer.

Here's the USA Today article:

Bon Jovi has best shot at 2008 Rock Hall of Fame induction

By Ken Barnes, USA TODAY
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is proud to induct Canada's weirdest band, Skinny Puppy …

OK, that's not a likely scenario, even if the industrial experimentalists are finally eligible. But when the nominating committee for the Rock Hall sits down today in New York to hash out nominees, the first step in the process that will elect the class of 2009, it will be choosing from a relatively unappetizing menu of first-time prospects.

The closest thing to the Madonnas, R.E.M.s, Van Halens and U2s that have starred at recent inductions is probably Bon Jovi.

Another leading prospect is the late blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, but the rest of the crop — including Cyndi Lauper, k.d. lang, Billy Bragg, and metal extremists Slayer — are more marginal prospects.

Which means the committee will need to turn to holdovers — those previously eligible artists who have yet to gain sufficient support. Among them are previous nominees Chic, Donna Summer and the Beastie Boys, all of whom must confront the "Is disco or rap really rock?" conundrum that regularly polarizes voters and fans.

"If people are adamant in their disregard for disco," says MSN senior music producer Sam Sutherland, "Chic is in trouble. But talk about a band with crazy chops who used a rock vocabulary … they should be in."

Sutherland feels Bon Jovi has the inside track for induction. "They have just enough rock legitimacy among critics and sales power that it's hard to see skipping them," he says.

A number of perennial fan favorites long ignored by the Hall — Rush, the Moody Blues, Chicago — shouldn't raise their expectations, Sutherland says. Their disconnect with the critics and executives who dominate the nominating committee is still in strong effect. But he holds out hope for one long-overlooked legend, Neil Diamond.

"He's got his credibility back, working with (producer) Rick Rubin," Sutherland says. "All those years of spangled shirts and summer shed performances obscured his '60s Brill Building credentials. But now he's got a much better shot than he did 10 years ago."

Yeah JOVI is gotta go in a heartbeat, even if peeps dont dig them they survived all that Warrant and Winger and Trixter crap in the 80's and killed the stereotype and showed they are a freaking good band that can play. Also how sad is it that the Moody Blues,Hall and Oates,Chicago,Heart and Neil Diamond arent in and most likely wont get in because of "Critical acclaim"? I mean how can anyone deny ALL of their work, i mean Neil Diamond has written HITS for artists that have been inducted and sung the songs originally, i mean lets be real already.

She should get nominated, getting in is a different story with the voters, but she deserves the ballot, and honestly i think anyone still recording touring etc..25 years later, should even have to be voted on, they should be in

I like Cyndi but let's be honest....has she really made a huge impact on the pop music world? Sure, she was hot in 1984 with 'She's So Unusual' but how many people remember any of her later albums and singles?

Chic deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! Their music was so influential. In the early 80s,you had numerous pop, rock and R&B groups trying to copy their sound.

Yeah, she's had a few hits but I don't think she will make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.I think Pat Benatar is more deserving...is she in it yet?

I hope k.d. Lang gets in!!

That woman has one of the best voices ever, if not the best. Her voice is pure and she needs no help from mixers or machines. Just listening to her sing can bring a tear to my eye. She never yells, never oversings and never misses a note. Awesome!!

lol

Yeah, but you've got to savor it just a bit, otherwise future ceremonies will really suck. wink

I used to get more uptight about this, but now I truly believe that a vast majority of deserving people are mostly going to get in. Just ask The Dells how many years it can take. wink

The only thing that really bothers me anymore is if I see someone I think should be an automatic fist-ballot entry that doesn't make it in during the very first year of eligibility (only 50 or so have ever done this, including Prince).

This happened to both Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic and Joni Mitchell.

Joni Mitchell and Parliament/Funkadelic to me represent 2 of 10 or 20 greatest of the last 50 years.

Oh well. That's life. wink

The fact it took the Dells 18 years to get in keeps me hopeful people like Mary Wells, the Miracles, Jerry Butler, Billy Preston and the like will get in eventually. smile

I think that they all get in over the next decade or so, but I admittedly don't know enough about the Miracles situation. Shouldn't they have been inducted with Smokey?

This is where it gets confounding to me. Together Smokey Robinson and the Miracles are unbelievable giants. But you start looking at just Smokey and just the Miracles and while that's still quite impressive, not quite such a no-brainer anymore to me.

But if I were king I'd make the decree on behalf of these people, along with people like Chaka Khan and Rufus.

If you consider Chaka with and without a band, that's a pretty impressive discography. And on top of that, she's one of the best singers of her era.

Yes, sometimes things are a little slow and people are a little dense.

That is true but the Miracles (much like JB's Famous Flames) were all major contributors to soul music (and rock & roll in general). It is confusing though because it's like to people the Miracles only mattered really when they did "Love Machine" and since that was one big hit, it almost makes them getting them in seem sacrilegious but in hindsight I still think they made the mistake inducting Smokey only. They should've inducted the Miracles in 1987 and then Smokey as a non-performer in 1988 or 1989. It would've made better sense but I get what you're saying.

See I like that right there as a solution. Because of Smokey's writing, he does become an obvious choice, but perhaps not so easily as a performer. And together they were dynamite.

I probably tend to look at it too much from a song/discography standpoint. But influence certainly matters quite a lot.
