other than a few covers (neil young, pixies, stardust cowboy), yes. he and his band wrote the album. he wrote all the lyrics on the non-cover tracks.

cactus sounds like a cover
what are the other covers
and which are his?

cactus is a pixies cover

i've been waiting for you is a neil young cover (which the pixies also covered, coincidentally)

i took a trip on a gemini spaceship is a legendary stardust cowboy cover

I know this isn't in question anymore but Bowie wrote all the other tracks solo (I thought originally that Tony Visconti was a co-writer but I got it confused with the fact that Bowie was the co-producer of the disc).

really? music and all? for some reason i thought his band members were credited for some of the music, but maybe i'm thinking of some of the b-sides from that album.

I know. But what we got was so enticing and a perfect way to transition out of the 90's into his more recent Visconti work.

"Shadow Man" and "Conversation Piece" still get me. cry

Here's a strange little tidbit I picked up over at pitchfork:

David Bowie Digs Into His Catalog for New Compilation

Shape-shifting music legend David Bowie will add to his catalog's large collection of compilations with the release of iSELECT: BOWIE via Virgin/EMI on October 14.

Fortunately, iSELECT: BOWIE isn't just another collection of the same old hits. Bowie originally curated the disc himself to be bundled with the June 29, 2008 edition of the UK's Mail on Sunday newspaper. The tracks are mostly off the beaten path, all songs Bowie "never seems to tire of," according to a press release.

In addition to the album and live tracks Bowie selected, the compilation features two exclusives: a Bowie-remixed version of Never Let Me Down's "Time Will Crawl" and a track called "Some Are" from Bowie's Low sessions with Brian Eno.

iSELECT: BOWIE:

01 Life on Mars?
02 Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing
03 The Bewlay Brothers
04 Lady Grinning Soul
05 Win
06 Some Are
07 Teenage Wildlife
08 Repetition
09 Fantastic Voyage
10 Loving the Alien
11 Time Will Crawl (MM remix)
12 Hang on to Yourself [live]

That's cool! Lots of my favorites there from "Lady Grinning Soul" to "Life on Mars?", "Some Are" and "Repetition". Of course, "Teenage Wildlife" is also fantastic!

Seems interesting but didn't Bowie already do his "unique" collection a few years back with...."The Collection"! Then again, cheers for it not being yet another rehash of the hits (although quite a few of those have come out in recent years, too). I guess he sure knows how to rerelease stuff and straddle the line between giving the fans what they want and just robbing us blind with buying the same stuff over and over. That "Bowie Box Set" looks mighty tempting!

the bowie box set is outside, earthling, hours, heathen and reality with the bonus discs of b-sides for each album, all collected in a box. even though i have the 2 disc sets of the first three albums, i've been tempted a few times to buy the box, just cuz i'm susceptible like that. redface

yeah, ya know, i'm not sure what the whole deal with "the collection" was - i know it was geared to new fans who want to go a level beyond the top 40 hits, and it was a nice little track list too...i'd criticize it for being another attempt to "rob the fans", but it was offered at mid-price (they're selling it at cheapo records by where i live for nine bucks, if i remember right) and it's hardly the kind of release that seems geared at making big bucks.

the iSelect comp was a freebie w/ a UK newspaper this summer, and from what i understand, demand has been so high from those who weren't able to snag a copy, they decided to release it retail. that's all that's about. shrug

though yes, i will agree: bowie's reissue/anthology/repackage insanity can get extremely shameless at times. these days, unless there's substantial content that i don't have, i won't buy it. 2 or 3 copies of each album is enough! lol redface

I never bought "The Collection" (but considered it). The problem with the majority of Bowie's rereleases and sets...they are all so damn good. That "Platinum Collection" with "Underground" on a proper Bowie release...I mean, come on! The man knows his shit. I would not be shocked if he comes out with a collection of songs from all the later albums on a single disc. After all, they are all pretty good. I even liked "Black Tie, White Noise" a whole lot!

And I didn't even take into consideration the rereleases of the classic albums....damn, Bowie!

is the first disc of 1. Outside on there the complete album? because one of the places i looked at it online said "selections from Outside" or whatever the title of that trimmed version was back in the day.

i see it all over the place and i'm tempted, as i don't have the double-disc versions of any of them. but i might have to skip it if it's not the full version of Outside

it's the full version. i don't think i've seen the truncated version you're talking about. if it's the same as the two-disc version i have, it's in hardcover gatefold packaging (i LOVE that packaging, by the way) and the bonus disc has some pretty indispensible stuff on it. it's not a complete compilation of the b-side material, though - there are some live tracks from the CD singles that got left off. still, there are plenty of goodies on disc 2.

Oh, and Anx - the Reality tour intro cartoon wasn't "Looking For Water". It was either "She'll Drive The Big Car" or just some jammed bit (it had Dave on harmonica). But since they played "Looking For Water" on the regular setlist here in Helsinki, I think I would remember if it would have been it.

oh right....i think the intro with the harmonica is on the album, but it doesn't sound as good as the disembodied concert snippet because the rest of the song drags it down. i like the main riff of "looking for water" though it doesn't really go anywhere. a lot of stuff on "reality" feels that way to me - there's one little bit i like, but it either gets buried under a lot of unnecessary production or there's nothing else in the song to keep the one little good bit moving along.

you won't be disappointed. personally, i think "hours" has the best bonus disc of all of them. you can almost piece together an alternate version of the entire "hours" album in remixes and alternate versions which is arguably better (or at least more interesting) than the original album.

i just wasn't sure if Outside was the full album in the Bowie Box or not, because some online store said it was "selections from Outside" or something.

yeah, i love the double disc versions. someone i used to know had all of them. i sold off much of my Bowie collection (and most of the rest of my music) years ago in order to be able to pay my rent and eat for another month, so i'm slowly replacing a lot of stuff.

for that reason alone, i really don't mind that he/virgin/whowever are milking his catalog to death the last several years biggrin

i love heathen, though i have an affinity for all his albums from 'buddha of suburbia' through 'heathen'.

i will argue until i'm blue in the face that 'buddha' is bowie's most criminally underrated album, even moreso than 'low'. not that 'low' is less brilliant, but it's finally gotten the accolades it deserves. most people don't even know 'buddha of suburbia' exists. sad

I for one! Is it the soundtrack to the tv series version of Hanif Kureishi's book? Or just inspired by it? The book actually mentions Bowie (in its gayest scene... ) razz

it's kinda both the soundtrack and music inspired by the tv series...i think you only hear the bowie stuff as incidental music in the miniseries, but the music is fleshed out into actual songs on the CD.
