Chris Brown Channeling Prince In New Song?

Just saw this on Dr Funkenberry's Celeb News

Chris Brown, an admitted dire-hard fan of Prince’s, has a new song called “Glow In The Dark” and it seems he has been listening to the Purple Genius a lot.

Take a listen:

You hear those keyboards? That drum machine? That guitar solo?

Are you feeling it?

Are we hearing things or what?

You tell me.-Dr.FB

Why are all of these washed-out R&B wannabes always trying to make Thriller or Purple Rain all over again? It's really getting tired...

Aside: We had a cookout Sat. and my sister's b.f. brought a cousin who asked if Prince was "still around" (in their sense of it). He b.f. told me to "show him". I took him to my music room to see my collection. HE HAD NO IDEA Prince had so many albums! His only comment was "That don't make any sense disbelief"

People don't realize what Prince has brought to music over the years.

People don't realize what Prince has brought to music over the years.

When I was in the military and was deployed to Kuwait, I brought my CD collection with me and when people got to the "P" section, people were shocked, Almost all of them said" I didn't know Prince had that many albums" and they were all amazed at the pages they had to go through to get to the next artist. It made me so proud. biggrin

As for the Chris Brown song, it's ok. It's nothing to run home about. The drum beats are Prince, the guitar work is something like Prince and so it the song but it's FAR from being Prince.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Chris Brown is really a robot & has no creative input anyway. So I blame this on his Producers & Label for continuously trying to make him an imposter. lol

Oh, give an artist like Chris Brown about 3 more years and he'll be washed out of peoples' minds fast. He's just a producers pet that makes uninspired sh*t and lets his dance moves overshadow his talent.

I agree with both statements. The producers are definitely getting tiresome.

confuse wrong forum, perhaps?

More power to the kid, I say. He wasn't even born when Purple Rain came out, was he? It's as much a testament to Prince's legacy as it is to the creative bankruptcy of R&B. From Usher to JT to Pharrell and Timbaland so many others before, singers and producers have been co-opting the Minneapolis Sound forever. And they all fly and crash, eventually.

In other words, it shows you why R&B needs to stop swagger jacking and actually build young artists' TALENT! lol

They rather have quality than quantity these days in general popular music. It fucking sucks. lol

Wanna-be? lol
Come on now. I understand the defending of Prince that goes on around here but Chris Brown is far from washed out. I'd say you need to catch up. Actually, you need to back up. You must be living in the year 2020 because Chris Brown is basically "new". Ask any 18 year old who Chris Brown is. I bet they know Chris Brown better than they know Prince. This ain't 1985. Chris Brown is one of the biggest R&B stars out right now.

As far as the KEYBOARD SOLO goes (there is no guitar on this song at all), it sounds nothing like any of Prince's solos and its actually good to hear a damn solo of any kind in an R&B song these days. Its rare.
Whoever produced the song jacked the "feel", just like Prince himself used to do on occasion. The beat is close to "The Beautiful Ones" but not identical. The chords are completely different. Its the beat that draws on the Prince influence.
For what its worth, that song is kinda weak but I'm glad to hear a SOLO in it. At least it shows some form of musical expression.

Eh, if todays kids can't come up with their own innovation, better they copy Prince than any number of other forgettables. It doesn't do much for me, but I've certainly heard worse.

That's probably true now, but do you really think he's gonna have a long and established career in the music biz? Do you think half of these crazy acts that are out there now are going to last? He's just like any other R&B pop male artist that has come into the spotlight for a minute and doesn't really make too much of a big splash in the next. I can't predict the future, but I don't think he's going to be in the biz that long. And Prince has changed much of the landscape of the music industry for over three decades now and has reinvented both himself and his music. Chris, even though he's been out for three years, hasn't done nothing but "copy and paste." That's saying alot!

lol Yeah. "Swagger jacking" requires lower overhead. Any 2-bit producer with GarageBand can do it!

OTOH, the Prince sound, like the Stax sound, can still be mined 2 and 3 decades later!

To us, but to the new kids, as Blaque implies, if they haven't heard it, it's new to them. That applied to 80's kids who thought Prince basically invented music, at a time when Stevie Wonder was the guy who made cheesy songs for movies! What goes around, et cetera.
