CORRECTION: Mariah's debut was 1990.

Uh dude, i wasn't trying to give a specific year for their debuts especially
mariah and it's not like 1990 came a decade later after 1986.
My point was simply that these women are over 40 and in mariah's case almost
40 they are fighting for a market that they have passed years ago.

Hey Graycap! Tell me something- is it harder to breathe way up there on your pedestal?

U don't FEEL music with your nose. At least I don't.

this is a music forum. Opinions will vary. These same folks that get upset
at us for making a comment about their favorite artists are the main ones
saying well her hair is ugly. That outfit don't match her wig. Her nose is
too big and they get real sensitive at a damn music forum if you say their
favorite artists music isn't that good or most of today's music is stale.

if janet's fans are so diehard why hasn't she sold at least 1 million copies of her new CD- I definitely bought it- does she have less than a million fans worldwide?

Maybe Janet fans only go into the wrecka stow and buy one copy. I saw a video of when Britney's last album came out and her fans were walking out of the store with 2 or more copies. Buying more than one copy of anyone's album just so they can debut at number one seems crazy to me and a little pathetic. If you like the album, why worry about those who don't?

Mariah will sell the most copies,we all know that.

I think Madonna will promote her album much more effectively than the others and she'll probably have the most successful tour.

Janet needs to be more aggressive in her promotion and she needs to get her tour together.

Madonna's new single "4 Minutes" is now #3 on the Billboard charts in America.

I think Mariah's "Touch My Body" is Number One.

Both ladies are doing extremely well so far.Janet's gotta catch up wink

Having varying opinions about certain artists is one thing-- telling people that they have "no taste" for liking those artists is quite another. "Cap" didn't just toss in his opinion about the artists being discussed in this thread, he chose to degrade the people on here who do like those artists- and that seems pretty uncalled for.

sad Yeah, it's sad, but that could also be chalked up to friends making copies for friends, limewire or other download sites, or that many of her fans haven't liked the last two albums, were skeptical about this one, and weren't to excited to see the producers she picked for in the end...I know I wasn't to, but I picked up a copy anyway because I like Janet enough to support her. I feel the same way about Mr. Nelson and I didn't like PE at all. I think if she toured this year it could give her last few albums a boost in sales. People respond better to albums when a tour is there to compliment them and Janet hasn't toured in a hot minute.

This is so dumb. I really don't see what these 3 ladies have to do with each other anymore.

Janet has been in the game longer than the other 2. She has been a full fledged entertainer since the mid 70s - performing with her brothers, on variety shows, on sitcoms, full fledged acting gigs - she just wasn't a superstar in her own right until a couple years after Madonna hit it big. She has the most successful acting career of the 3 by far - which isn't saying much - but she's co-starred in two hugely successful hit movies (Nutty Professor II and Why Did I get Married). She also holds the record for the most top 5 hits from one album of anyone, ever. What's more - she's a Jackson. It just doesn't get bigger - she is literally the baby of the most notorious showbiz family in American histroy - the whole Jackson mythology and name is an equal blessing and a curse.

Madonna is the epitome of the self-made icon who has defined fame for the past quarter century. No one is more talked about, hated, despised, admired, loved, worshipped, analyzed, or interpreted. She has what, more top 10 hits than God (or at least Elvis) by now. She is entering her 50s, she has dwarfed the age-is-just-a-number longevity and relevance of Cher, Tina, Barbra, and all these other multi talented, one named, egomaniac divas and she is not slowing down. She's super human. But she is a business woman and icon first and a singer/dancer (I won't even include actress) second. Period. She is the marketing genius performer of popular music, but her real claim to fame is her performance art - not her dancing or singing, but her videos, her photoshoots, and live performances where she more poses than dances, more projects the words than sings, and controls every last detail for the extravaganza. The records, though usually great - some of the best pop music ever - are still secondary to her personality.

Mariah is a vocalist and a songwriter. Vocalist, first, songwriter second. Her lyrics are syrupy sweet, dumb, and catchy. Her schtick is increasingly sluttier and more vapid with each release, but she knows how to appeal to the bland tastes of pop/urban radio and it's respective fans like no other. That's her genius - she uses her god given million octave range to oversing every mediocre song - of which there are only two versions, i might add - always featuring a rapper or a hip hop producer to guarantee enough air time on both sides of the pop/urban coin. She is vapid, inane, shameless, and ridiculous but casually sexy and inoffesive and unoriginal enough to never really rock the boat. But she is primarily a vocalist.

I don't see many similarities. Janet's fan base this decade seems to have thinned out substantially compared to the other two. Madonna is the biggest icon, most likely the biggest star, and sells the most records and concert tickets worldwide. Mariah is the American radio and record store darling. They may have been in competition in the early 90s around the time Justify My Love, Love Will Never Do Without You, and Emotions were all the rage - but it's been awhile since they were all on par with each other commercially. (They were never equals creatively).

And that's my long ass 2 cents.
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

hmmm interesting analysis.

I get tired of these silly "battle of the divas" competitions, too. All three of these ladies have their own fanbases, careers and lots of money.I bet they laugh at the way the media always tries to make it a competition.

My ranking of them:
Madonna (duh! she was just inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)
Mariah Carey (definitely has the best vocals of the three and has more #1s)
Janet Jackson (not really a fan of her recent works especially after that hoolabaloo at the Super Bowl)

you are not wrong for your opinions.. but im glad to know and what you said supports my opinion that people stopped likening janet because of the superbowl. and not because of her music...

confuse I don't think Mariah is eligible yet. I don't think she can be nominated for induction. I think it's 25 years since the release of ur first single before they even nominate u for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mariah didn't come out until 1990, so she's not eligible yet. She'll get nominated the moment she's eligible, I don't doubt it.

Don' t know about Janet though and I agree with you that people seem to have a hard time forgiving Janet and Justin for the Superbowl incident. It was one moment in their careers that I'm sure neither are dwelling on, but can't say the same for many people. Unfortunately, I can't completely say that her current music is without fault. It's not as good as it should be, but that's just my opinion.
