I'm shopping at Best Buy last night and saw a new VINYL album release from The Who or Journey. That was a shocker.....Is this the start of a trend?

Independent music retailers have been a limited number of vinyl copies.
I saw one last month with copies of alicia keys and janet on vinyl.
It is surprising that a major retailer like best buy are carrying
vinyl.

Uhm, did you really think vinyl has disappeared somewhere? It's not sold in supermarkets or record chains, but most record stores sell vinyl alongside CDs. Furthermore, many new records do not get released on anything else than on vinyl.

Far as I see it, new vinyl has been back, but only in independent stores.

The trend is not going away either.

Recently I have seen these mainstream 2008 releases all on 2xLP vinyl:
Michael Jackson - Thriller 25
Janet Jackson - Discipline
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah
Pete Rock - NY's Finest

Turntable sales are quite healthy in my city and it's the kids that are buying them, not grown folk.

You can get them for some, but you pay for it. I just shelled out $30 for the new REM.

If it is a dance album or something to be played at the club, they seem to be more plentiful and cheaper. At least around me.

I haven't seen new vinyl in an (inter)national chain store like HMV or a big box store like Best Buy.

There's a cool "chain" of stores in my province called Play and they also have ability (proper shelves/space) to stock vinyl. Not a huge selection of titles, but the section/demand is growing.

I still go to the mom and pop stores for vinyl.

Vinyl has been making it's way back for a while now. The latest testament to this I think is the Portisehead 3 album. If you get the vinyl, you get a usb stick so you can have the files digitally as well. I've been seeing this more and more.

IMO, It might go the way of If you want to own, get the vinyl (it'd be nce if there was an MP3 counterpart you get as vinyl is hard to rip) if you just want the digital files, go to iTunes.

Vinyl is indeed staging a comeback

I don't doubt real music fans will go towards vinyl. A year or so ago, stores started selling small unit record players combined with CD/cassette and radio for good prices and I for one bought one and have since really started adding lots of vinyl.

Virgin Megastore packs a far amount of vinyl of new releases. I do go in there and listen to a lot of new EPs.

I've seen a tiny little bit of new vinyl in a local owned record store but it has been strictly shit hop. Well, hell, these days, what isn't shit hop? Anyway, this vinyl has been strictly the shit hop by rap artists. I think the store carries it because some of the local DJs like to mix.....as if that shit was fast enough to mix with anyway. They might as well be mixing ballads.

There's nothing new that I like so it really doesn't matter to me whether vinyl makes a comeback or not. However, I would like to be able to buy Prince albums on vinyl so I can keep my collection consistent with his old jams.
