Don't you know it's part of your patriotic duty to love The Beatles, just like reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and putting your hand on your heart when the National Anthem is played? flag If you hate the Beatles, then the terrorists win.

If you were born under a rock (or somewhere along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border, the Kalahari or Gobi deserts, or Antarctica) sometime after 1981 and have never heard or paid attention to the Beatles eek , the the best place to start if you are really on a budget is with their 1 album.

It has 27 of their biggest hits and is a good place to start with their history. If you can afford it though, I would recommend the Red, Blue and Past masters albums.

They contain all of their biggest hits, a few notable album tracks, and some single releases which were not featured on their albums.

If you are going to listen to their albums, these are their early period releases:

These are their intermediate albums, when they were still the greatest teeny bop band in the world but were beginning to show some of their deeper creativity:

And these are their later albums, where they went from teeny bop superstars to musical geniuses:

If you are a real Beatles nut, then you cold go on to listen to their Anthology tracks and the Live From The BBC compilations, but then again I'm assuming that you haven't heard the Beatles much.

music typing

That's the complete breakdown right there. Excellent.

They really did go from cover songs and screaming girls to some of the greatest songwriting ever.

Just throw in the following if you want to hear the music played live:

The incredible complexity of art appreciation is that for innumerable reasons all of us can struggle at times hearing, seeing, or feeling something for what it truly is (call it subjectivity or personal preference).

Which is totally cool until we become experts in things we have no expertise (and we all do this to varying degrees).

And we can always fall back to the tried and true, "But I'm the expert of me!".

That's certainly true and it’s also a really good way of refusing to learn anything from anyone but ourselves.

Take something much less subjective like the iPod. It was for years mostly respected and admired, then came the inevitable backlash that had far more to do with fashion and image of mindless consumers than technological deficiencies.

Some parallels can certainly be drawn with The Beatles.

But raging against the masses can be just as flawed as trusting them.

I'm not saying anyone is doing that here. I'm saying that we've ALL done this -- it’s part of being human.

I am probably one of the few people here who actually can remember The Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. And while I have always enjoyed their music, I wouldn't say that I actually love them. (I don't own any of their albums, in fact - though I've heard most of them.)

They certainly deserve their place in music history. I've just never been crazy about them. shrug

If you're loving Hey Jude, then it's probably a safe bet that you like later period Beatles.

Abbey Road is a no-brainer.

I might recommend Let It Be...Naked (over the real Let It Be). Maybe it's blasphemy, but I'm a die hard lifelong fan and I prefer the remastered, reordered "naked" album. And that album is probably closest to Hey Jude in tone. Soulful rock & roll. Some huge hits & some lesser known gems like I've Got A Feeling.

The Blue album is fantastic. And past masters 2, for a slightly cheaper compilation of later hits.

don't waste your time on hits collections and singles compilations....buy the albums, any of them. if you like what you've heard so far, you can't go wrong.

the beatles have their nay-sayers, but i think it's important to keep in mind who their contemporaries were and what they were doing when they were doing it. people tend to take the beatles out of context due to their familiarity with the material...and we all know that familiarity breeds contempt.

I kind of agree with this, as I had compilations as a kid and of course ended up buying everything.

But then, I had them on LP, Cassette, & cd, so I bought everything multiple times anyway lol

I wouldn't say buying the hits collections are a waste of time. Some of those singles aren't on any albums, right?

Yeah the two Past Masters are almost proper albums because of that (though some of the Let it Be stuff is duplicated).

They're the only compilations (I believe) that specifically follow that format of "songs that aren't on the albums," and even the Let It Be songs are the single versions, not the album versions.

And the single versions are better (specifically "Across the Universe"). nod

The only good thing I can say about Let It Be... Naked is that it adds my favorite Beatles song, "Don't Let Me Down." I hate, hate, hate "The Long and Winding Road" without the sappy strings. Phil Spector may (or may not) be a murderer, but he knew what he was doing with that song.

Yeah the singles versions are cleaner, & the end of Get Back is cooler on the single.

As for the album, adding Don't Let Me Down in favor of Dig It certainly makes sense! And while I like the little asides "I dig a pygmy!" it sounds more like a proper album without them, to these ears, at least. I like the new track order, as well.

I totally agree about The Long & Winding Road. Paul always acts like Phil Specter made the song sappy. It was sappy to begin with and the strings merely complete it. I expected my attitude towards it to change when I heard the Naked version, but it didn't. I almost always skip the song.

I really like the pristine quality of the production. The original is soaked in reverb, and doesn't sound bad, but the minimalism suits the original purpose of the album.

Now, if they could only explain why Across the Universe is still there... confuse

HOW do you "hate" the freaking Beatles?

Most people, like that Moonbeam fella, just hate the Beats cuz of their reputation, never giving the music a chance.

But on the other hand, maybe Kylie Minogue is better. wink

That's not true at all. I've suffered through an entire album of theirs Sergeant Pepper and a total of at least 50 songs. I haven't liked a single one, and that's my prerogative. shrug

I cannot believe that a person that is named after one of the most Beatle-esque prince songs in the world denounces EVERYTHING the Beatles ever did.

You just haven't heard the right tracks. It's the reputation you hate more than anything else, it closes your mind for the actual music.

I wish I was in Oz and I could play you just ten tracks. Then totally pounce you if you dislike them.
