Cliff Richard dissing The Beatles in a recent interview... What the hell? Link: http://www.dailymail.co.u...ge_id=1773
'Ultimate Pop Star' Cliff Richard launches astonishing attack on 'horrific, out of tune' Beatles Mr Nice: Sir Cliff has broken character to launch an attack on The Beatles Sir Cliff Richard has launched an astonishing attack on The Beatles, claiming some of their music was "horrific" because it was "out of tune". Sir Cliff, who has a reputation as pop's Mr Nice, maintained some was so off-tune it was "unbelievable" - and "unforgivable". His criticism of the pop icons concentrated on the guitar solos, often played by George Harrison, who died of cancer in 2001. The 67-year-old singer said he could not believe these were not re-recorded. He insisted: "The Beatles were an incredible force. Of course they had their own sound, style and wrote their own songs. "But, yes, even now, when I listen to them, some of the guitar is so out of tune, it's unbelievable. "I couldn't believe that here they were in this high-tech age, with four-track recording machines, and they couldn't go back and do it with a tuned guitar. "Being out of tune - I find it unforgivable.' Sir Cliff said he could not remember which songs offended him the most. "It's mostly their guitar solos, which can be fairly horrific," he added. Later, in the interview with Q Magazine, he was quick to point out he had achieved things that The Beatles had not. The man dubbed the Peter Pan of Pop said: "My only gripe is when critics writing the history of rock'n'roll leave me out altogether." I'm surprised by this being quoted to him NOW... if he felt so strongly about The Beatles why didn't he say something about it earlier, like for instance when ALL of the Beatles were alive? And just for the record, I would rather listen to a badly recorded, partially out-of-tune Beatles record than any pitch-perfect, generic, sugar-coated crappy tune that Cliff Richard has sung on (note I said SUNG on, because he doesn't write his own shit)

Well, the guitar solo in "All You Need Is Love" is horrifically bland. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

"I am the UPS – Ultimate Pop Star – and no one can take that away from me. "A few years ago, Channel 4 did a programme called The Ultimate Pop Star – and it turns out I have sold more singles than not just Elvis, but everybody. "That's my big claim to fame." The Beatles biographer Hunter Davies said: "It doesn't sound like Cliff Richard. He's usually banal in his comments. "I've never heard the guitar-playing being attacked before. I'm surprised. "George is someone everyone thought was one of the best guitarists ever. "Historically, Cliff's nose was put out of joint when The Beatles came along. "He was a total pinch from Elvis Presley, with the same gyrating hips. "The Beatles looked totally different. They sang in Liverpool accents, whereas Cliff affected a mid-Atlantic accent. They wrote their own songs, while he sang other people's." SIDENOTE: Jimi Hendrix only have a few hits singles. But I STILL hear people name-check him way more than Cliff Richards. As for The Beatles, their names (especially Lennon/McCartney) will always be name-check more than Cliff Richards because THAT band was groundbreaking with their albums.

Cliff is entitled to his opinion but for me this is further proof of the ridiculous immunity people think The Beatles should have. I don't think in the history of popular music has there been an artist that for some reason criticism is not somehow deemed allowed. The Beatles cannot be criticised, if they are 'You don't know music' or 'You have bad taste'. Some of The Beatles material is slightly out of tune but they probably didn't care. Cliff has done himself no favours though because you simply don't say those things about the fab four. [Edited 2/3/08 20:51pm]

[Edited 2/3/08 20:51pm] When a celebrity says that, it's out of jealousy, when everyone else says it, it's an opinion...really. I mean, like, who gives a damn about Cliff Richard anymore in the UK. He sold more singles than Elvis presumably but people still love talking about Elvis over HIM. [Edited 2/3/08 20:54pm]

Doesn't Cliff Richard's sing suck AC garbage that would make Christopher Cross look at him and say, "Richard? That guy is a lame pussy!"
Now that I'm a huge Beatles fan. Frankly, I think most of their songs sound better as covers than the originals. Joe Cocker "With A Little Help From My Friends" Bette Midler "In My Life" Stevie Wonder "We Can Work It Out" Aerosmith "Come Together" Elvis Presley "Something In the Way She Moves" (actually, this is a really great Beatles tune but I think I prefer the cover) I'm sure there are others.

While up until now, no-one would have viewed Cliff as a guitar expert, as he tended to leave that kind of stuff to his old backing band the Shadows (an influence on a young Carlos Santana while still in Mexico, so there's a sign of their international appeal ), I think Cliff has a bit of a point when it comes to some of the pre-1966 Beatles tracks.
The odd example aside, I've never heard George Harrison called one of the great soloists. His thing was more complementary licks around the intros and vocals imo. Yeah, Cliff probably has some sour grapes about how the Beatles etc swept away his early brand of rock n' roll pop, but some of Harrisons's solos are either masterpieces of abstraction or just not too great imo. As to the tuning, I'm not too sure what Cliff's hearing there. And by the way, Cliff and the Shadows' first hit 'Move It' is probably the best British Rock n' Roll record of the '50s, and still stands up today imo. And, while no great fan of his general work (though his late '70s singles had their moments imo), Cliff has managed to sustain a very successful pop career for 50 years now, and is the only artist to have had top ten hits (maybe even no 1's?) in Britain in every decade since the '50s. No mean feat. I love the Beatles overall, but this idea that they did no wrong and are almost beyond criticism is quite funny really. They were human, unlike Cliff who is obviously holier than all others .

I like a lot of music that is atonal or "out of tune"- The Velvet Underground and Can, for instance. I can understand that Cliff may not have the same kind of ear that I have, and that's ok.
He is right about the unforgivable part, however. Sorry, couldn't resist! Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Of course some, like Something, are legendary! I agree. Whatever you think of the Beatles - and surely only the most churlish of us would disagree that they were fine songwriters - I don't think anyone can pretend that they were faultless musicians. They all brought what was needed to the table, sure, but let's not get into the attitude of "they could do no wrong" because it simply isn't true. Still, there IS some great playing out there - Abbey Road in particular (I Want You (She's So Heavy) is a personal favourite) What on Earth Cliff Richard is raking all this up for right now is anybody's guess, though! This is not an exit
