I forgot about Alicia! At first Im like "here we go again".."No one Blah blah"..but then Junior Reid comes out and does One Blood and it keeps rollin' from there. I thought it was cool how she gave so much of her time to pay homage to some great dancehall tunes. It was a good look.

i thought that was very cool that she gave the dance hall artists their props. honestly i doubt they'd ever be acknowledged on the american music awards otherwise. i wonder if most people in the audienc were confused.

probably lol

Holy crap...Nicole Scherzinger is fine.....but her performance was awful!! This was the worse picks to open the show.

i agree. she didn't sound so good to me.

ok so the highlights of the show to me were Alicia Key's! i thought her performance rocked but maybe not for something like the american music awards. i think it would have ben better recived at the BET awards or MTV awards, she killed it though, Chris Brown what can I say? his dancing is no joke and i loved Mary J. Blige. I love the fact that she had no backing dancers or anything and she still rocked it! loved the song too. it had an 80's old skool vibe and she looked great!

oh and country time beyonce was interesting. that woman who sang fits actually had a great voice.

It wasnt so much Nicole not sounding good, its the freaking material. Now i love Nicole but these WACK-ASS producers and writers have to GO! When i first heard that Nicole was doing a Solo Side project between PCD albums i thought, Cool, because there was stuff that she wanted to work on, well, Universal cut that INPUT from her to two songs, one with Sting and One written with the guy from Snow Patrol and produced by Martin Terfere, this is what needs to be pushed, but no way, Universal sets her up with TIMBA-BLAND, WILL I AM ANNOYING, and NO-YO to name a few, now the reason, obviously, they want carbon copies of Beyonce and others, GOD!! Now i know what you say, its just POP MUSIC, true, but POP music in the 80's NO ONE sounded the same and no one looked the same, now you are applauded for not being different. Its like the industry has 2 or 3 proto types and everyone has to fit them and if they dont they are shaped to fit them. I stayed away from this show just watching clips on YouTube and i was so bored i couldnt even watch people i like. Duran duran and Lenny were like the token "oldies" and i couldnt even bare to watch them nor could i watch others that i enjoy like Alicia and Nicole or Beyonce, just because the whole show in general sucks and always sucks, theres no life and no diversity. One year that i remember on the AMA show The male category featured Billy Joel, Elton John and Stevie Wonder, now what do you have JT,Ne-yo and Chris Brown or Daughtry, i mean come on, sure times have changed but just look at that difference and the diversity in Elton,Billy and Stevies music.

This is truly sad. As a music freak, this used to be a yearly highlight but I am so disinterrested in the state of popular music right now that I had no idea it was even time for this show neutral

If these "award" broadcasts can't compete with the level of talent presented on something like...

...the T.A.M.I. Show, they should go on hiatus until they can.

You're onto something. As it is, I find those shows SO hard to watch. If it weren't for this thread, and watching along with others that also felt the pain, I wouldn't have bothered.

Comedy...lots of it, that would make them much more palatable.

But still this is a reflection of singing on a Shitty track, and that has alot to do with it. Nicole has a good voice but when singing shitty material like a Will I am track or a timbaland track you sound like shit. Look at Duran Durans latest, Simon, Good voice, some shitty songs, doesnt sound good, or Lionel Richie singing on Ne-Yo's production, Awful, even when Lionel performed that song "I call it Love" it was awful, it sounded awful, vocally it was nothing. To me alot of people with good voices and talent are selling themselves short with doing songs by Shitty overused producers and bad songwriters, who actually get paid to write these things.

True. I don't think she's a bad singer per se, but maybe not solo material? Then again there are singers that can sing bad material and somehow make it listenable, and even good.

I think shes just too good for the material and there are alot of artists like that, when i hear Nicole singing im thinking, i wish she was in a band, not doing mainstream stuff, and when i say band i mean with players behind her. I remember a year ago going to see the fashion award show that Elton did and performed at, Nicole performed with PCD and then at the end with Elton and his band, and that shit blew people away, Rihanna was up there too and it was truly horrible which showed that Rihanna isnt that kind of singer that can do more dificult material or work with skilled musicians and a band. As far as there being singers that can make bad material sound good, i dont believe that, a shitty song is a shitty song, regardless of the artist. Mariah is a great singer but she sings alot of shitty songs, and they may be catchy, but they are still shitty songs.

dang yall so what are we gonna do when we run out of singers?

okay I know we are all tired of b, but come onnnnn that was tight. sugarland jammed! b looked different for some reason. I gotta give it to sugarland. I thought rhianna and neo was like watching b and usher. some of those performances were quite boring and hardly no mix of races in the audience. I am not saying that that is a good or bad thing, but it was something I noticed.

Just watched Lenny's performance - I like the song but I think he was lip synching, he did it VERY WELL but I think it was pre-recorded. He's never that clean live (totally on key, no breaths), I don't buy it. But I do like the song. smile

Some thoughts. Firstly, hearing it as a country song really shows up how crappy those lyrics are. Country music has by far the highest standard for lyrics, so the lack of sophistication in B's song is shown up when country people sing it. When she comes out though it's clear she's got "it". Janet and Madonna could learn a lot from watching her, but of course she goes and ruins it by wailing all over the place like a banshee. I also can't stand the angry attitude she brings to everything. In a way it's good to have a mainstream diva who's not just about lipsynching and choreography, but I just wish someone would teach her a little subtlety.
