Remember "The World I Know" by Collective Soul, with the people about to jump off the building?

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below.
And I laugh at myself
As the years roll down.
cause its the world I know.
Its the world I know
I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

falloff

It seems no one can help me now
I'm in too deep
There's no way out
This time I have really led myself astray

Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a one way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here no there

Can you help me remember how to smile
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded
Life's mystery seems so faded
I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

I was referring more to pitching an album title like that to a major label back then.

Don't forget the Presidents of the United States of America. They were uplifting... okay, now looking at the lyrics ... maybe not.

http://www.youtube.com/wa...sj_U6vObUA

; Lump sat alone in a boggy marsh
Totally motionless except for her heart
Mud flowed up into lumps pyjammas
She totally confused all the passing piranhas
Shes lump shes lump
Shes in my head
Shes lump shes lump shes lump
She might be dead
Lump lingered last in line for brains
And the ones she got were sorta rotten and insane
Small things so sad that birds could land
Is lump fast asleep or rockin out with the band

Shes lump shes lump
Shes in my head
Shes lump shes lump shes lump
She might be dead

Lump was limp and lonely and needed a shove
Lump slipped on a kiss and tumbled into love
She spent her twenties between the sheets
Life limped along at subsonic speeds

Shes lump shes lump
Shes in my head
Shes lump shes lump shes lump
She might be dead

Is this lump out of my head I think so
Is this lump out of my head I think so
Is this lump out of my head I think so
Is this lump out of my head

lol My So Called Life.

I meant more that the Seinfeld characters were all jaded, unhappy, sex-driven assholes. Never would've been on TV in the nuclear-family era 1980s.

My friends are so depressed
I feel the question
Of your loneliness
Confide... `cause Ill be on your side
You know I will, you know I will

X girlfriend called me up
Alone and desperate
On the prison phone
They want... to give her 7 years
For being sad

I love all of you
Hurt by the cold
So hard and lonely too
When you dont know yourself

My friends are so distressed
And standing on
The brink of emptiness
No words... I know of to express
This emptiness

Imagine me taught by tragedy
Release is peace
I heard a little girl
And what she said
Was something beautiful
To give... your love
No matter what

This is fun reliving depressing 90's songs. How about this one? I like this one--it brings tears to my eyes, but you have to admit it's depressing.

How 'bout "Jesus to a Child" by George Michael. Actually, most of his '90s material save "Fastlove", "Outside", and "Too Funky" were downers.

eh, the Smiths and the Cure had it before the 90s, (and I was right there with them! dancing jig) But they had more of a sense of irony, fun and style... I used to lap up that depressive stuff! I guess they were more of a caricature of depressiveness...whereas Nirvana became the real thing shake

And early punk had more of an outward-looking political agenda...

So, shrug...I see your point.

So what can we say about the culture as a whole, that lends itself to this? My theory is it's post-Reagan narcissism...the pit of ultra-materialism...alienated middle class youth who had outworn the previous expressions of non-conformity and punk...there was nowhere else to go, not even non-conformity was an option. Now that's depressing! lol

I think in the 90s it became more of a case of marketing depression to the masses, whereas in the 1980s it was more of a niche thing.

O never looked at the 90s as depressing but I am heavily into NIN and Nirvana right now and that stuff was fucked up. I was listening to a lot of R&B fluff then and really aside from Mary's My Life, I don't remember too much depressing R&B.

Maybe not too much depressing R&B, but it definitely became increasingly lurid:

I think these were about as healthy as a 2 Live Crew record. neutral

Jodeci was okay....

I think my hate of R.Kelly is legendary by now lol
