The "Black Hole Sun" video is classic. Who remembers the girl with the ice cream spilling out of her mouth? I haven't seen that video since it aired back when it was popular. Still like Soundgarden though.

1991 was the year that Nirvana blew up into the mainstream. Just prior to that, we had the leftover crap from the 80's hair metal and teeny bop bands. Obviously, "Teen Spirit" was the big depressing grunge anthem, and while there was very angry dark gansgta rap around prior to 1991, it was balanced out by the likes of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Heavy D, Digital Underground, and Will Smith (a.k.a. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince). But I think the moment that hip-hop took a huge turn for the darkness came when Dr. Dre introduced Snoop Dogg with "Deep Cover", which was actually the first big rap single which advocated killing police officers. ("Fuck Tha Police" was very incendiary in its attitude towards cops, but it didn't actually protray killing them, and while Ice-T's "Cop Killer" drew the most attention from angry politicians and social activists, it was really a metal song and not hip-hop.)

Actually, the whole decade of the 1990's wasn't depressing; it was just 1991 through the end of 1996. Then there was this incredibly dramatic change that happened. Part of it was because the biggest musical heroes of the decade were dead or murdered (Kurt Cobain, 2Pac, Biggie Smalls), got too hammered by their drug addictions (Layne Staley of Alice In Chains, Courtney Love, Jimmy Chamberlain and D'arcy Wretzky of Smashing Pumpkins, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots) or just disintegrated (Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, The Breeders); and the other part was a generational shift in music that occurred almost exactly at the same time that the grunge and gangsta rap movements burned out (Spice Girls, Hanson, Backstreet Boys, 'Nsync, Britney Spears).

Cool thread - I guess you have a point, but maybe I'm still too stuck in the 90s to recognize it!
PPL like me who grew up in the 80s were sick of that over-packaged commercial fluff that overtook everything (S.A.W. - Kylie, Rick Astley - Bros!!!, NKOTB etc etc) and the early nineties felt like quality music was finally getting some exposure.
The late 90s backlash tho was worse than the 80s and made me switch off altogether. And I guess I never really re-connected...

Why has noone mentioned The Breeders? and Sonic Youth (altho they wer 80s alternative remnants)?
Stone Roses were upbeat depressing - as was all of Britpop really...
