lowkey said: how can the beastie boys even be eligible before run dmc?? and i thought an artist had to wait 25 years after their debut album before they are eligible...didnt the beastie boys come out around 1987?
Actually they're now saying "single". I believe that's how Grandmaster Flash got inducted if I'm not mistaken though they did say "album", lol.

run dmc is not elidgble untill next year Oh ok, wow... now I see... and they started out as a punk band that became a hip-hop group and were something of a mixture of rap and rock and other sounds by the end of the nineties.

I stand corrected:
Run DMC's debut single, "It's Like That", came out in 1983, not 1982. How odd that the Beasties formed in 1979 and released their first music in 1982... lucky bastards. I definitely think they do need to be inducted though. "Fight for Your Right to Party" and "No Sleep 'til Brooklyn" (along with "Walk this Way", "King of Rock" and "Rock Box") were as influential in the mixture of rap and rock. I think Run DMC will be shoo-ins next year.

I think John Mellencamp should definitely get it. I think his performance will be great. He's the one that screams "legend" at of all of these. I love Madonna but hearing that she might be inducted makes me feel old!!!!! Shake it til ya make it

Though I feel Donna Summer screams the same thing to me. I think John and Donna will be shoo-ins in my honest opinion. Afrika & the Beasties could be inducted at the same time and it'll come down to Madonna vs. the Dave Clark Five. I truly believe so.

It's absolutely ridiculous that Rush is not in. Anyway, still interesting to "handicap" this year's set of nominees! "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Legend? How about Leonard Cohen? If ever he doesn't get inducted, I wish he'd say, "I've seen the future, brother: It is murder!"

Though we know two of the five "yes's" will have to wait the next time. I have a feeling DC5 will be on the outs again or Leonard Cohen because I'm hearing they may let DC5 in this year so who knows? And we have another dilemma: will they let in two nationally known rap legends in there? But we shall see though. So I feel if Jan Wenner wants "ratings", Afrika will also be out (though I so want him to get in there). It'll be funny if Madonna and the Beasties get inducted... it'll feel, just like you said, 1985 all over again. [Edited 10/2/07 9:08am]

I would say no on the Dave Clark Five also, and the reason being, they are almost being grandfathered in at this point, which is alright, but with that being the case, just let more people in. Be like the Baseball Hall of Fame, one year no one got in, another year 11 people got in, there is no limit at all, and you need a certain % of votes, its not a battle for the top 5. The Hall is missing way too many people for me to actually look at artists like Dave Clark Five, Leonard Cohen,Chic,Ventures and say it would be sad if they didnt get in. I mean just missing Chicago and Hall and Oates is enough to tear down the place. But the absence of Rock Women like Joan Jett or Benatar or Heart and then to miss KISS and ALice Cooper, who influenced alot of bands that exist today, its just crazy at this point. But all i know is if John Mellencamp doesnt make it this time and misses votes for the fourth time im going to lose my mind, one year Percy Sledge got more votes than him? Whos voting Percys family?
We also have to remember the way the Hall runs its shows now, they seem to pick from genres and time periods too, my guess if Dave Clark Five gets in it will be one of those inducted to little fanfare and maybe not even a video segment. If i had to guess this year I would say its going to be John,Madonna,DC5 or Leonard and either Afrikka or Beastie. and either Donna or Chic. I think Halls of Fame are like popularity contests. I mean, yeah they do try to induct the more reasonable ones but they do it at a less than frenetic pace. Plus politics play a role in this. I mean, I think it's absurd that the Ronettes get in but the Marvelettes don't. Also considering Smokey Robinson's solo career started in 1973 yet he gets inducted in 1987 alone without the Miracles, I'm convinced that some games are played during nomination ballots, they tend to have "chads" in there that'll put in the more awkward artist and say he's worthy of the Hall of Fame. Like why is Percy in there but you couldn't induct Johnnie Taylor or Joe Tex, two men who carried Southern-based soul music to the top and had their share of worshippers? Politics. I mean, I'll dig it if Donna gets in because not too many black female artists are in there and she's influential to a lot of artists and I'll be happy if Leonard and John gets in because they're respectable acts. So I'm 50/50 with the Hall of Fame but I understand why it often gets criticized. IMHO, some legendary rock acts (like KISS and Alice Cooper and the motherfucking Stooges - they're more inclined than the Sex Pistols who totally shunned them, lol!) are too fucking big for the Hall of Fame. Even Rush. And let's not even mention Metallica... well maybe they'll get in 2009... I just hope Jethro Tull don't get in next year on the nomination ballot.

So like u said the Hall is a 50/50 game at this point, some i look at and go OK they should be in without a doubt and some where i go WTF!!! Like the Dixie Cups?? How did they get in? Yeah, Hall & Oates are LEGENDS, man. I'm beginning to think they may get nominated in like five years. The committee also is infamous for limiting number of nominees/inductees to the point where it's become redundant really.

Hall and Oates was one of the few 70's rock and soul acts to not only survive but dominate the 80's. Many of their songs had crossover appeal. They were MTV staples in the early 80's. And they made many good songs. There'd be several acts I'd vote for before H&O, but many more acts I wouldn't vote for over them. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
