What 'White' artists do you give a "black pass" to?

I was reading thru another thread and some one sarcastically asked this question to another poster who had suggested that white singers can't do 'naturally' sounding soulful music. His claim was that the only one he could name was Teena Marie.

I dis-agree with that assumption and wondered what other 'white' artist do peeps here think can sound just as soulful as any black artist and maybe even better than most.

A fav of mine is Nikka Costa.

IMO opinion she is about as funky and souful as a singer can be. There is nothing forced or studio driven in her delivery... just pure soul and funk!

Michael McDonald. Just check out his duet with Patti Labelle, "On My Own". It's him that I'm listening to on that song, not her. I was shocked when I found out he was white. Dusty Springfield's another one. That's about it as far as I know.

Robin Thicke, most definitely! He is such a talented songwriter and has written songs for countless artists for years. He is also a fine singer who has a dead-on flasetto, but needs to work on his live performances a little. His newest album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke is a damn good album too and has been on the charts for many weeks and months. His debut record was impressive too!

Be darned for stating a new thread to a question I or others may not have been around for or for any one who wishes to actually say something themselves instead of just reading what others already said and 'necro-posting' to an old thread!

If you didn't want to answer... if you didnt want to say anything constructive to the thread... then why even bother to open it in the first place? Did any one make you click on it to open and type a pointless response..?

GEEZ will peeps around here lighten up!!! This is a discussion board..people. If we never posted new threads because the subject has been talked about already... then there would be no... discussion board. If you don't like a question or think its been asked too much... save yourself the time and energy and simply ignore it! Go drop your pointless .02 in a fresh thread.

This is why I come around here less and less.

I don't think any disrespect was intended toward you, so don't feel the need to go on the defensive. Ehuff's assertion that it comes up every two months, I think, is actually a conservative estimate. A good number of otherwise well-intended threads in this forum devolve into pointless back-and-forths (I say pointless, as they rarely lead to any understanding one way or the other) that could just as easily be handled privately between members in Org notes. I won't even call them discussions or debates, because they tend to involve any number of parties who refuse to back down from their opinions and it doesn't lead to anything productive.

So, while your question was likely harmless, it obviously opens up a can or worms for some folks. Yes, it's just as easy not to click on the thread and save yourself a headache, but some find it hard to bite their tongues. lol

I agree as well. My original post was in support of this notion. The poster in the other thread had negative things to say about artist such as Joss Stone or Robin Thicke... and questioned there 'soulfulness'. I was too late to jump in and offer my opinion in the thread I had read which I mentioned in my first post.

As I mentioned in another post... to others... then why did you bother to post anything at all? Why...? I haven't discussed this myself.... so why should it matter to you on a diswcussion forum what I choose to post to discuss? If some one wishes to discuss some subjects... even if for the 100th time.. then so be it.. 101. Just ignore the thread and move on.

LIFE people... get one!

And so far so good and thank you for those actualy posting revelant answers.

RipHer2Shreds said

very.. very... true. Not meaning to jump on the defense... I just hate when I come around here that it seams to be some peoples mission to just ... have nothing positive to say. It makes you avoid posting often just in order to avoid the pointless arguments.

Debates relevant to a subject are fine.... but snide little comments which don't relate to anything... is more annoying than any redundant thread.

heck... I saw a post in another thread... got curious at the moment as to what the current posters thought... so I start the thread.

I'm sorry.

Forgive me.

I didn't know that there was some rule against posting questions for which you were not around to ask or answer in the past. I didn't realize just how many irritable people i would irritate by doing so.

PurpleCharm said

Ummm.. the FACT that you even bothered to open and post to a thread TWICE concerning a topic which you felt had been discussed to death beckons of someone with nothing more constructive to do... ie no LIFE.

Ohhh why bother

If a mod is watching..... please lock this thread at the request of the originator... So I can let these people go back to trolling the forums and looking for more redundant threads to post too.

lol wow..i can't believe he posted on here. and some of you know who i'm talking about.

i don't give a shit who needs a black pass or white pass or who can play a didgeridoo like a mother, but there have just been as many threads about blue eyed soul shrug nobody cried about that. and i don't see the problem when the very artist that this site is supposedly representative of has sung and commented about the very topic. and some people are so quick to discredit r&b or hip hop and how crappy it is.... yet turn around and praise Joss Stone, Fergie, Christina Aguilera (all of whom i love) etc.. and even nasty people like Eminem and Justin Timbershit.

interesting.

no need to lock it. if you don't like it. don't post.
