LAS VEGAS (AP) - Somewhere, Kevin Federline is laughing.

An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears delivered what was destined to be the most talked about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards - but for all the wrong reasons.

Kicking off the show Sunday night with her new single, "Gimme More," Spears looked bleary and unprepared, much like her recent tabloid exploits on the streets of Los Angeles. She walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching. And, perhaps most unforgivable given her once-taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape.

Even the celebrity-studded audience seemed bewildered. 50 Cent looked at Spears with a confused expression; Diddy, her new best friend, was expressionless.

And at least one review was in almost immediately. Following Spears's performance, comedian Sarah Silverman offered her sarcastic take. "Was that incredible? Britney Spears, everyone," Silverman said. "Wow. She is amazing. She is 25-years-old and she's already accomplished everything she's going to accomplish in her life. It's mind blowing."

Later, backstage hip-hop star Akon offered his reaction to Spears's performance, telling PEOPLE: "That could have been better. She needed to focus more. She looked nervous and I think the pressure got to her."

Similarly, Common told PEOPLE about Spears: "I think it didn't seem like she wanted to be there. There wasn't any spark, it didn't feel like life was there."

Some comeback -- that's what happens when your whole career has been nothing but gimmicks.

lol lol lol lol

that's sad

I haven´t seen it but it sounds sad.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Well, I broke my MTV boycott to watch Britney’s performance. I was shocked, saddened.. First, I'm not a Britney fan, but I never thought it would be as bad. People in her camp should have NEVER let her get on stage. They should have never, EVER pitched the idea to her. She's out of shape..unfocused. I don't care if they did have to change it at at the last minute. She's a pro.. If she couldn't adjust, then she should have said so "Thanks," but "No thanks," and walked. I don't know who is advising her--if anybody--but they allowed MTV to use her and themselves in a way. MTV execs are parasites, period. Britney should have never friggin performed OBVIOUSLY. May MTV crash and burn. But, some might go down with it.

Like Michael in a way(and even Janet to a lesser extent), Britney seems to be surrounded by sycophants not really seeing her for what she has become or WORSE not even caring what she has become just using her for their own gain. It’s sickening. I would think these people would have known better. I would have hoped these people would have known better.. I’m extremely disappointed because I really thought they were better than that, but I guess concern for their own success is all they really care about, so they are just content to ride the coattails of their meal ticket for better, and now for worse. If Britney goes down, I hope THEY go down, too. She should never have been encouraged to take the stage ever. Yeah, she’s an adult and ultimately responsible, but then again even adults are vulnerable sometimes. (At least, Janet had sense enough to call-off the tour.. Hopefully, this next time around, Janet will surround herself with true professionals rather than people out for their own gain.)

Finally, I also think the artists MTV created need to transition or they will be over, too. Britney, Janet’s and even Madonna’s style of performing seem to be passe. To me audiences are getting a bit tired of the lip-synching with dancing. Most people want to see music artists who attempt to sing at the very least. I just don’t think the lip-synching is going to cut any more. Madge has tried to transition to more of a live vocalist. I think Janet and Britney if she ever takes care of her personal issues enough to make a true comeback are going to have to sing live even if they dance. They are definitely going to have to mix it up a bit more because people aren't going to continue to buy what they are selling.

Last night was a damn sad commentary about commercial music, or perhaps the commercial side of the entertainment business as a whole. It’s disgusting because I feel badly for the PEOPLE involved. But in a way, this might have been music's and MTV's "rock bottom," so it's going to have to decide how to be credible again.. if that's even possible. Do ya'll remember the song "Video killed the radio star"? Well now, MTV "reign" has run its course because people are tired of the "image" without any substance behind it.

God no. That is not what I am arguing. I am arguing that both are on about the same level in singing, dancing, and musical skills.

Janet was dependent on Paula Abdul and her brother for dancing, for her sound on Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. And her stage performances -- even Madonna.

Britney Spears is dependent on a host of people also.

Same Dancing skills ??... get the fuck out of here.... Britney has never brought it like Janet.... it's all to evident when they both performed on the VMA'S the same year... Britney's dancing has always been wack... she may look like she's doing the same thing because both are heavily choreographed.
and Paula only worked with Janet for the Control album

I knew this was coming on and purposely didn’t watch. Heard all the hoopla on the morning news like it was global event.

I’m so not surprised. If she pulled it off good but did anyone really think she was ready for this? Laying down vocals for a couple of tracks is different then getting onstage in front of millions. Was I suppose to buy into the hype of all her shenanigans and feel that she was playing the media? Sell that sh*t elsewhere. Perhaps she needs to work on healing her body, mind and spirit before trying to prove who’s back professionally. She may get it together eventually but right now it looks like she needs to take a moment.

JB... I was speechless watching that performance last night.. I truly can't believe that the folks at MTV after seeing her rehearsal (I'm assuming it was just as bad) encouraged her to go through with that performance.. I like a good comeback as much as the next person, but she is CLEARLY not ready

I’m not really buying that they told her to change the performance at the last minute either. Even if they did, a coherent and together professional knows how to pull it off.

Britney is becoming the new Michael Jackson lol Her personal life has gotten so crazy,so out of control, that it's hard to take her seriously as an artist. Her offstage behavior is all anyone really cares about. The music is secondary. When artists reach this point,it's usually the beginning of the end for their careers.

Not a great performance, but not the dismal failure I'm hearing it called.

I respectfully disagree. I consider Britney's performance this evening to be a dismal failure on many levels, and in practically every way one could possibly define or look at it: first and foremost, it failed at being the successful, career resuscitating moment in the spotlight Britney - and her legitimate fans and true supporters - hoped it would be; it failed at entertaining in a positive, legitimate way, vs just being a sideshow drawing viewers hoping to witness the potential trainwreck aspect of it; it demonstrated failure on Britney's part in dedicating the time and self-sacrifice necessary to physically and artistically prepare herself for a such a crucial performance; and, most disgusting and shamefully, it showed the utter failure of many people (i.e. MTV, Sarah Silverman, audience members, the public at large) to display basic human compassion towards a fellow human being who clearly is struggling with complex and deep emotional issues.

That is so true. Say what you will about Britney now; at her peak she was an electrifying performer. It's obvious that she needs help; it's no longer funny to laugh at the car crash that is her life. She hasn't really hurt anyone but herself. She's not an arrogant punk; she paid her dues coming up. She wasn't a one-hit wonder. She made the most of a limited set of skills.

And yet...imagine what it must be like to have that level of fame and success, where every move you make is scrutinized, and decisions you make involve millions of dollars and hundreds if not thousands of lives of your employees and fans.

Then imagine to have all that in your hands when you are sixteen, seventeen, eighteen.

Child stars mess up spectacularly...hell, ADULTS mess up spectacularly, when they are in the fishbowl of Modern Celebrity.

Britney's main concern now, shouldn't be her career or dancing or "singing". It should be to repair her life.

For the audience of fellow professionals(!) to act gleeful at Britney's failure?

Shameful. And when those very same stars are forgotten, who will laugh at them?

This was the funniest thing I've seen on tv in years. What a joke.

Her dance moves were mechanical and completely pathetic. I have never seen anyone lipsync so bad either. What a media whore, loser she is.

I hope we never have to see her "perform" on tv again.

DAMN!!!! eek I'm just hoping that "Eminem" isn't harsh enough to kick a person when they are down, especially in the predicament that he has been in over the past two years or so. I know he'll probably be making a comeback, sometime in the future. Hopefully, it ain't attention-whorish, but that's sort of a pipe dream by now, ain't it? I still love his second and third albums ("The Slim Shady LP" and "The Marshall Mathers LP"). Best of luck for both of them.
