I think Britney can still make a comeback though. She's very young and still has time to get it together, but she's just not ready to come back to the music scene now and her performance tonight proved that.

I don't think so. Didn't you hear Sarah Silverman? She's 25 and has done everything she's ever going to do lol It's a wrap for Britney

Ugh. It was so bad.

Check this out though...go to PerezHilton.com and check out the posted link to "Kiss You All Over," another new Britney track. It's BETTER than "Gimme More," if for no other reason that it's heavy on the Linn Drum and sounds like a Prince throwback from the 80s mixed with some early Janet (as Perez accurately points out).

I don't really watch MTV, but I was flippin' tonight and I saw about 2 min of this "performance." This heffer was horrible. She couldn't lip-sync on point, she couldn't dance, she looks too thick for that outfit (though I'd still hit it), and she just needs to stop. She even had kids laughin' at her (big ol' forehead Rihanna.) Oh this was great, I love to watch this broad make fun of herself. Ya'll gotta hear some of the joints that leaked off her new release. She's actually trying to sing and it sounds like someone is raping chickens while listening to Prince rap.

This was the worst fucking lapdance I ever got from Charter Cable. I demand my money back.

They should have had Jaime Lynn dance that number. Brittney is a total loss.

Sounds sad. She really needs to get her life together.

The prediction was made on the Org a year or so ago that she would rush a comeback, in efforts to prove that she'd conquered her issues. Looks like that prediction was spot-on.

Poor thing.

wow...that was horrible. that was horrible. did she even want to be there? and what idiot decided to turn use the same floor layout as the Golden Globes? I always that it smart of the VMA's to have an actual audience next to the stage...it creates energy for the performers...all poor britney got was stunned looking superstars looking back at her.

but she did it to herself she did...she can't blame nobody else...she did it to herseeeelllfffff.....yeah!!!!

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Somewhere, Kevin Federline is laughing.

An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears delivered what was destined to be the most talked about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards - but for all the wrong reasons.

Kicking off the show Sunday night with her new single, "Gimme More," Spears looked bleary and unprepared, much like her recent tabloid exploits on the streets of Los Angeles. She walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching. And, perhaps most unforgivable given her once-taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape.

Even the celebrity-studded audience seemed bewildered. 50 Cent looked at Spears with a confused expression; Diddy, her new best friend, was expressionless.

And at least one review was in almost immediately. Following Spears's performance, comedian Sarah Silverman offered her sarcastic take. "Was that incredible? Britney Spears, everyone," Silverman said. "Wow. She is amazing. She is 25-years-old and she's already accomplished everything she's going to accomplish in her life. It's mind blowing."

Later, backstage hip-hop star Akon offered his reaction to Spears's performance, telling PEOPLE: "That could have been better. She needed to focus more. She looked nervous and I think the pressure got to her."

Similarly, Common told PEOPLE about Spears: "I think it didn't seem like she wanted to be there. There wasn't any spark, it didn't feel like life was there."

Some comeback -- that's what happens when your whole career has been nothing but gimmicks.

But I cannot help but like her more than Justin Timberlake. At least she does not pretend to be a musician or an amazing artist.

Not a great performance, but not the dismal failure I'm hearing it called. Pity she didn't update her look, material and concept to something more flattering for a mother of two.

Britney's evolution is a cautionary tale. She had a meteoric rise, and the press and music industry couldn't get enough of her. Now, it appears those agents are out to cannibalize what's left of her.

She ceased being a person long ago, it seems, and now is little more than an icon for public consumption. And folks appear to be lining up to feast while the carrion is still warm. I've never been a fan of hers, but it's still sad to see this befall her.

I wonder if she could have gotten a fair shake at all, under any circumstances.

say what? did you and i watch the same performance? she walked through that performance like she was on some major muscle relaxers barely moving her body, forgetting to lipsynch and displaying about as much enthusiasm as a turtle.

this was by far the worst performance i have ever seen on an awards show...even worse then the paula adbul thigh-ology extravaganza.

I agree. She is 26 and has sold more albums than Janet Jackson who has been in show business for 25 years. She achieved so much fame and success in such a short time. I was still in grade school when she came out, and I remember loving her albums as a child. sad

first off...that was more than the dismal failure i was hearing about. seriously, she's supposed to be a professional caliber dancer. that mess was grade school quality at best.
