Sunshine Anderson can officially be removed from the ONE HIT category. Here recent song, "Force of Nature" (that was co-written by Beyonce) did pretty good on the Urban AC charts. Her follow-up single to "Heard It All Before" did well also (Lunch or Dinner).

Lunch or Dinner is hot.. I like that track

What about the family's screams of passion? If not mentioned already.
I know they had a followup single that i dug a lot called high fashion but
unsure how it charted.

I understand how we are qualifying the artists as one hit wonders but i wonder about some of the artists for ex. johnny kemp. Even though dancin with myself was a successful followup to just got paid chartwise, it was still obscure meaning most people don't associate the song with johnny kemp or simply don't remember it.

Another example, though jeffrey osborne is far from being a one hit wonder is a song he recorded in 1988 called she's on the left. The song was number 2 r&b if my memory serves correct. Najee may correct me on this one if i'm wrong. Even though the song was number 2, it was obscure. Maybe some r&b fans may remember it but i doubt it seriously if his pop audience even heard of the record. When you think of jeffrey osborne you associate him with on the wings of love, and the woo woo song. I'm not aware of the chart positions of these 2 songs i really don't need no light and we're going all the way but those 2 songs are more popular than she's on the left but may not have charted as high because of competition during the time those recordings were out. The point i'm trying to make is some songs that are not memorable like johnny kemp's dancing with myself may chart higher than some other memorable popular tunes because of the lack of competition during the time the recording was out.

Nevertheless; i am on point as to how we are classifying the one hit wonders for the purpose of this thread. I hope i didn't tire you guys out with this post. biggrin Great thread!

High Fashion was another single but I don't know how high it charted on the R&B charts. Najee, hook us up with that info.

As mentioned with Gregory Abbott, some acts have such a big hit that it engulfs whatever follow-up success the artist has. Sometimes, an act may have a big hit in mutliple formats and then subsequent hits in, say, the soul music format only (both instances apply to Abbott). By whatever measure, a lot of acts get labeled as "one-hit wonders" when in reality they had more than one hit -- it's just that the public becomes so fixated on that one huge hit.

You're right, Johnny Kemp's "Dancin' with Myself" is not a memorable song despite being a top five single but the success of "Just Got Paid" -- and the logic that it was a hit only because Teddy Riley produced it -- may have shortchanged anything else he did to the point it hurt his career. Not only did the public have some resistance accepting Kemp's follow-up songs but it caused a lot of people to forget he actually had a hit before "Paid" (the top 20 hit "Just Another Lover").

The ironic thing about "She's on the Left" is that it's the only No. 1 single Jeffrey Osborne enjoyed on the Billboard R&B Singles chart. IMO, it underscores how Osborne's solo career is judged more in the context of a pop artist than as a soul artist.

Osborne did have songs that the traditional pop audience did not follow -- "Soweto" (No. 18, 1986 on the R&B Singles charts) is another example ("Left" only peaked at No. 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 while "Soweto" did not chart). What's even more ironic is that power ballads like "We're Going All the Way" did much better on the R&B Singles chart (No. 16, 1984) than on the Hot 100 (No. 48).

Here is Jeffrey Osborne's chart history, both on the Billboard R&B Singles and Hot 100 charts; respectively. The list is driven by his top 20 soul hits:

"I Really Don't Need No Light," (No. 3 in 1982; No. 39)
"On the Wings of Love," (No. 13 in 1983; No. 29)
"Don't You Get So Mad," (No. 3 in 1983; No. 25)
"Stay with Me Tonight," (No. 4 in 1984; No. 30)
"Plane Love," (No. 10 in 1984)
"We're Going All the Way," (No. 16 in 1984; No. 48)
"The Last Time I Made Love (a duet with Joyce Kennedy on her 'Lookin' for Trouble' album)," (No. 2 in 1984; No. 40)
"Don't Stop," (No. 6 in 1984; No. 44)
"The Borderlines," (No. 7 in 1985; No. 38)
"You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song)," (No. 2 in 1986; No. 13)
"Soweto," (No. 18)
"Love Power (a duet with Dionne Warwick on her 'Reservations for Two' album)," (No. 5 in 1987; No. 12)
"She's on the Left," (No. 1 in 1988; No. 48)
"Only Human," (No. 3 in 1990)
"If My Brother's in Trouble," (No. 11 in 1991)

I'm sure Najee will give us the chart placings, but all of these acts had other hits.

Carl Carlton had a massive hit in 1974,"Everlasting Love".

Mtume had a few other hits after "Juicy Fruit":

"Would You Like To (Fool Around)" (1983)
"You,Me and He" (1984)
"Breathless" (1986)

Lipps Inc. scored a few other hits,as well:

"How Long" (1981)
"Designer Music" (1982)

Narada Michael Walden had several other hits:

"I Shoulda Loved Ya" (1979)
"I Don't Want Nobody Else To Dance With You" (1979?)
"Gimme Gimme Gimme" with Patti Austin (1985)

Again,I don't know how well these songs did on the charts.

"Let Me Know" was a moderately successful third single from "Don't Stop" (peaked at No. 44 on the Billbiard R&B Singles chart, 1985).

Mtume did have other hits besides "Juicy Fruit:"

"Would You Like (to Fool Around)," the follow-up to "Juicy Fruit" (No. 11, 1983)
"C.O.D. (I'll Deliver)," (No. 20, 1984)
"You, Me and He," (No. 2, 1984)
"Breathless," (No. 9, 1986)

Good call.

As for the person who mentioned that Carl Carlton only had ONE hit is incorrect. He had 2 really big hits. She's A Bad Mamma Jamma and Everlasting Love (early 70s I believe). He had a few hits that did well on the R&B charts, but he only had 2 big pop hits. Gloria Estefan also had a hit with a remake of Everlasting Love in the mid-90s.
