Anyone remember that cat Rome from about 10 years back with "I Belong to You". Also, Christion, he had the rack "Full of Smoke."

City High had the hit "Caramel" and Lucy Pearl had that one track. That one dude Houston with the song "I Like That" from 2003.

If Houston had not gouged his own eye out, he might have given Mario a run for his money.

Also, City High had 2 hits...so did Lucy Pearl. Lucy Pearl had "Don't Mess With My Man" and "Dance Tonight". City High had "Caramel" and "What Would You Do". Both of City High's songs were BIG. Also, Rome's 2nd single "Do You Like This" was a semi-hit.

Actually, it's King Floyd who sang "Groove Me."

Some of these acts that are being called "one-hit wonders" in reality had more than one hit single (and what I call a hit single is a song that makes it the Billboard R&B singles charts' top 20). For instance, Gregory Abbott also scored with "I Got the Feelin'" (No. 5 in Spring 1987) and "I'll Prove It to You" (No. 5 in Spring 1988).

Junior's "Too Late" was a Top 10 single; Shannon also scored with "Give Me Tonight" and "Do You Wanna to Get Away;" The Timex Social Club scored with "Thinkin' about You;" Calloway scored with "Sir Lancelot;" Musical Youth also had a hit with Donna Summer, "Unconditional Love."

falloff I can't believe you mentioned "S.H.I.T."!

Anyway, Playa probably counts, but their first single, "Don't Stop the Music," was very popular on Video Soul (it got to #1 or #2 on their countdown). (Regardless, that album is one of my favorites of the '90s.) Public Announcement is definitely out -- sadly, that "Mamacita" song was a top-10 hit in addition to "Body Bumpin' (Yippy-Yi-Yo)." Portrait is debatable, but I think "Honey Dip" (top 20) was enough of a hit to disqualify them. Rome is definitely out, because "Do You Like This" was also a top-10 hit.

As far as I'm concerned, there are two legitimate definitions of a one-hit wonder. The classic one is when the artist only has 1 hit before disappearing. The second, more debatable version is when an artist has a hit that is so huge it completely eclipses any other minor hits. Someone like Gwen Guthrie falls into the second category. Her huge hit was an R&B #1 (and made the top 5 in the UK), but I don't think any other song of hers even made the top 20.

I agree. A "minor hit" is a song that makes the Billboard R&B singles top 40, IMO.

To apply your second condition, an argument can be made, for instance, that Gregory Abbott falls in that category because "Shake You Down" eclipses anything else he ever did and those unfamiliar with his music only think of that song. However, he did have two other top five singles on the Billboard R&B Singles charts, even though the success of "Shake You Down" engulfed them.

Portrait is also not a one-hit wonder. IMO. The follow-up to "Here We Go Again" -- "Honey Dip" -- and "I Can Call You" from their second album "All That Matters" were also top 20 hits.

hmmm I like to think of it as tiered. If your big hit was a #1, I'd say you'd need another to reach the top 20 (at least) to avoid being a one-hit wonder. OTOH, if it only peaked somewhere in the top 10 or 20, another top-40 song is probably enough.

I wouldn't count him at all.

Portrait is also not a one-hit wonder. The follow-up to "Here We Go Again" -- "Honey Dip" -- and "I Can Call You" from their second album "All That Matters" were also top 20 hits.

nod Agreed.

Actually, Johnny Kemp had several other top hit singles:

* "Just Another Lover" in 1986 (peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart);
* "Dancin' with Myself" in 1988 (the follow-up to "Just Got Paid," which peaked at No. 5);
* "Birthday Suit" in 1989 (peaked at No. 21).

I would say an act has to have at least two songs land in the top 20 not to be called a one-hit wonder. If anything, an act who has a No. 1 single should have enough momentum that even a modest follow-up single should land in the top 20, if not the top 10.

I agree, there is no way I consider Gregory Abbott a one-hit wonder. However, I can see why some people inaccurately would consider him one, because a song like "Shake You Down" completely engulfed whatever follow-up success he had.
