MIKA - best new artist of the year!

(In my humble opinion giggle )

Think Queen meets Scissor Sisters meets John Cameron Mitchell meets Junior Senior wrapped up in an uber cute bod!

I love him...and Snake Peel and are obsessed! lol Check 'em out!

wow, isn't this like 10 threads about him in 2 weeks?

but yeah, he's cute, but i don't get the appeal. he just seems like the Queen entry in the unoriginal homage genre (Scissor Sisters, the Killers, the Darkness, Franz Ferdinand).

that stuff makes for fun times, which is fine, don't get me wrong, but it's hardly the best of anything when it's such an obvious love letter to the original artists who did it much, much better.

Oh fuck off...it's just fun. And the fucking Killers, the Darkness, Scissor Sisters and Franz Ferdinand (for as much as I like them) are hardly anything new. rolleyes

I'm not a huge fan of his, but I like that he's a talented gay man (though he hasn't directly addressed that, as far as I know) doing well for himself and not being pigeonholed into a certain genre.

That's exactly his point- that Mika is just as unoriginal as those artists.

A lot of new artists that I think are really talented don't stick around long for some reason.....marketing maybe? confuse I think Amy Winehouse will suffer the same fate. I hope not though.

giggle

I think he's great...and it's just fucking OBVIOUS that he's not "original"...you'd have to have been living on another planet for all of your life to be unaware of that - it doesn't mean he's not good at what he does.

There are some artists who are quite original and innovative, but they generally don't get a lot of exposure.

As for me, the matter of originality isn't as important as it probably should be. For some artists, it doesn't bother me at all, whereas for others, it really grates me. I guess it depends on the source of the influence. For instance, Chromeo really bites early 80s synth funk, but I absolutely adore them for it. Franz Ferdinand channels post-punk from the late 70s, and I love them for it. The Strokes have shown a number of influences ranging from The Velvet Underground to Television to synth pop, but I love it all. This is probably because I'm also a fan of the source of influence.

Mika, on the other hand, conjures images of Elton John and Queen, neither of which I particularly like. As such, he grates my last nerve.

that was my point actually. that while there can be a great deal of joy in listening to an homage act do a distilled, rehashed version of what made a past artist great, it's not original or something that i'd consider "the best" of any year.
