I agree, get Britney off there, and while your at it, get Nirvana out of there and the White Stripes, every single pol Rolling Stone does ALWAYS has to have a Nirvana and Stripes song on it, enough already, in about 15-20 years then you can exam their relevance

Songs don't change the world, people do. And Rolling Stone isn't useful as toilet paper these days. And such lists are defeatist tripe anyway, suggesting that all great songs have already been written.

AND it's a crap list.

Well, it HAS been a good 15 years since "Smells Like Teen Spirit" dropped and it's safe to say it belongs here.

I'm with you on White Stripes though... a bit too early to say.

Apparently, none of the voters have heard "A Love Supreme," "Take The A Train," "All Blues," or the works of Louis Armstrong, Cole Porter or the Gershwins. Heck, for that matter, "Amazing Grace."

I am not surprised by the fraudulent nature of the list, but I am surprised by the pretentiousness.

I gotta disagree, Nirvana, was very overrated as far as their importance, similar to the way Guns N Roses were. There are clearly bands that i would put on this list long before even thinking of Nirvana, REM,Pearl Jam would be one. Nirvana is said to have put Grunge on the map, which was nothing more than a Faze that lasted a few years, that is why Nirvana wouldnt get my vote, had they still be recording now then maybe.

this isn't about bands. it's a list about songs. Smells Like Teen Spirit did actually amount to something in the history of rock & roll and popular music in general, whether you personally dislike the band or not.

True but its not influental as a song, Nirvana was more influential as a whole on people not for a song. Its not about me liking them, since i dont like about 20 of the artists on that list as a whole. But as far as a song there are more influential songs, i said REM and Pearl Jam not as bands but i would have put "Losing my Religion" or "Jeremy" or "Evenflow" on there over Teen Spirit. Much of their influence is from the death of Cobain.

Also off that list, the Ronettes (whats with fascination with them), The Kingsmen and Black Flag, sorry. and Honestly Presley and the Velvet underground too.

it was the song itself that had the influence in the beginning. it's always the song. the audience couldn't give 2 shits about a new artist. it's the song that makes the impact, and this song did have enormous impact. and as for the Pearl Jams and whatnot, it all started with Smells Like Teen Spirit.

How? because the Ronnettes are on their and Stevie Wonder isnt? The Kingsmen? why are they on there over any song by The Beach Boys. Presley would be on there but for that song. Lets be real, Martha Reeves on their but nothing of the supremes, which if it wasnt for them there wouldnt even have been a Motown or any girl groups of today. Lets not Overrate this list.

the list is, again, not necessarily about the artists and what YOU think of them. it's about "songs that changed the world" ... songs that had massive impact or influence on sounds and popular culture.

Well its understood but the list is terribly flawed, the fact again that Th Supremes arent on their for "baby love" or "Aint no mountain", Stevie isnt on their for _____ (well pick a song for him), The bee Gees not on there for "Staying Alive" or "Night Fever" they only influenced a whole decade. And the BEach Boys not on their for "Good Vibrations" give me a break, this list is terribly flawed as always with Rolling Stones lists.

any list like this is not going to completely please anyone. it really goes without saying that "this song should be on there, and this one shouldn't." so why are you bothering to go ahead and say it? it's like the other 10,000 versions of these lists out there. we all think something is out of place on it, and that there are things missing shrug

I've seen this list before and originally was quite upset and the order, until someone pointed out that it is indeed chronological. The songs themselves all merit inclusion. Sure, there are dozens of others that could have made the cut, but as it is, the list is ok.

The criteria for the list includes the 40 songs that changed the world most. Whether you liked it or not "Baby One More Time" was more influential than "I Want It That Way".
