Why I Admire/Identify with MJ

I woke up this morning with a simple enough question posed on my mind. "Why do I like MJ so much?" It sounds like a well founded enough question. Michael's fans are some of the most crazy and die-hard people there are. However, how many of them take the time to actually pinpoint, "Why MJ?" Why not Prince? Why not Madonna? Why not Janet?

I started thinking back to my childhood and when I got interested in Michael. This would have been 1992. I started seeing all these images of the Smooth Criminal video in my head. I decided to give it a glance on YouTube.

Upon watching it, it all kind of came back to me. Why I dig Michael and his music so much. It is for the simple fact that: I identified with him. When I grew up, I wasn't into sports. I wasn't outgoing at all. It seemed like there no-one who could be someone that I could say, "Look at him! He gives me hope that I'm not some weirdo shy kid." Michael made it okay to be shy. He made it okay to be reserved. He made it okay to be [i]different.[b] He wasn't the average entertainer, back then, or now. If anyone had a problem with him, all he had to do, was dance. There wasn't anything they could say. Even if people would say, "Oh Michael is weird." Put on a clip of Smooth Criminal or Thriller, and their asses will shut up.

Michael made it okay to be who I was then. Even though, I've changed and grown - I've never forgotten that moment when I first saw MJ on tv. I was glued to MTV for like 7 hours just watching him. My friend was over, and he ended up leaving, cus he got sick of me just watching the TV and saying, "Be quiet. Look at this dude! Watch him move!"

Somewhere I heard someone say, "Nobody moves like Michael Jackson." It is the truth. However, I'd like to put it like this, "Nobody is like Michael Jackson. He is one of a kind."

Here is to you Michael Jackson.....one cool motha fucka! Thank you for being you!

I do have to agree with that one statement because sleeping in the bed with kids that aren't your own is pretty damn "different."

He´s got the talent.
He´s got the charisma.
He´s got the strenth to be himself.

I think he has been an amazing visual artist, through televised performances and music video.

This is why he caught my attention so early on.

Also, I related to him being shy in interviews.

Nice thread.

Interestingly, I became a fan right around the same time you did Jason.

It was the "Black Or White" video that did it for me.

I was probably one video after you. "Who Is It" was just released - not the "official" video, but the one with all the footage from like "Thriller" and "Bad" mixed in and MTV was having the "My Weekend at Neverland" contest.

Mannnnn I miss those days. Especially now with the state music is in.

I admire and identify with Michael Jackson, he's my idol. I've been a hugh fan of his for over 25yrs and I think he's very misunderstood by the media and general public.

I admire Michael Jackson mainly for his pure genius as a singer, dancer, musican etc. But I also admire how strong he his as a man after all the crap he's been through from 1998-2005.

People tell me Michael Jackson is weird, when I say I'm a fan of his. And I always tell them that I'd prefer people to think of him as werid instead of normal because in pop music that means boring ie Phil Collins and Justin Timberlake are stars who are very "normal" yet have boring personas.

When I hear or see the word "Magic" I think of Michael Jackson because he's werid in the most cool and amazing way !
