They're both a disgrace to the industry, but Backstreet was even more unimaginably awful than N Sync.

*NSYNC, but "I Want It That Way" was the best song of that trend

Nick Carter was my fav. BSB and I still think he had the best voice out of all of them... even better than Justin Timberlake.

The boybands were what I lived for when I first got into music. I didn't get so deep with them than I did with the later acts I got into... but they still had some value to me.
Ok, time 4 me to get a little rebellious. If Prince said to me that both groups a disgrace to the industry, I'd say "so what? They meant something to me when I was growing up." I'd defend them to his face if he was that adamant about it.

Of course, that was then and this is now. (now I'm really not sure if I'd really defend boybands to Prince's face if they came up in conversation confused ) And that was more or less in the past. Neither group has come out with anything decent recently. (Yes, I know BSB came up with a new album in '05, but it was nowhere near as good as Millennium). In those "old" days, I could count on both of them since they released music every couple of years and I looked forward to the next thing they did next.

Boybands were my first experiences with music. Always will be. They were in a time where I believed in mainstream radio and almost always found something good to listen to. I took a hiatus from mainstream when I got into Dream Street... when they broke up, there was nothing left to come back to. I jumped from one act to the next like a child being shifted from fosterhome to fosterhome.

BSB & *NSYNC, those were good times... but it was in the past and will never come around again.

To me, they capped off the 90s as a decade almost completely bereft of music I could relate to and enjoy. Their music and image seemed so contrived, and they seemed like such puppets that it felt like a slap in the face. I remember being really angry at the time that so much attention was given to a bunch of preened prancing puppets and felt offended that they were stealing radio and video space from more deserving artists. Now, radio has become such a wasteland that it's hard for me not to look back at them and feel like their success contributed to the degradation of musical integrity in popular music.

That said, people have said the same thing about artists that I adore to this day, so it's all good.

I think that's a fantastic track - strip away the screaming teenagers and the boy band image and I think you'll find that it is a perfectly written, wonderfully melodic song. It's definitely one of my favourite pure pop records of the last decade or so.

Boy, this thread is great, claws coming out everywhere.

Anyway, the boybands of the 90's are what I ID with the 90's sound... after the era of boybands ended, that's when music's quality started to go downhill 4 me. I took a hiatus from mainstream radio for a year... and I came back and nearly everything I hear is garbage, can barely call it music anymore.
After my hiatus from mainstream, the world of music got so depressing cuz I could never find anyone that stick around with good material for more than a couple of years

Both had their weaknesses and strong points, so I'll just break it down by categories:

Singing: JC from 'NSync can really sing, but in general BSB were better singers than 'NSYNC. BSB were better at pulling off ballads and 'NSYNC did better w/the dance/upbeat tunes then BSB did. Winner: BSB

Dancing: 'Nsync hands down. They had that cool dance move in "Bye Bye Bye" and BSB could not compete with that or dance as good as 'Nsync. Winner: 'NSYNC

Music Videos: BSB had some good videos, okay one good video which was "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" but 'Nsync's videos were better overall. "It's Gonna Be Me" when those 'Nsync dolls came to life was genius! And who could forget the video for "I Drive Myself Crazy" where the 'Nsyncers were running around in stray jackets locked up in an insane asylum. Their videos were much more creative. Winner: 'Nsync

Record Sales/Achievements: BSB have sold 75 million record WW while 'Nsync's are somewhere around the 40 million range. 'Nsync holds the all time record for most albums sold in a week by any group or artist (w/a very impressive 2.4 million albums sold) and I don't think anyone will be breaking that record anytime soon, so this round is a DRAW.

Better Signature Song: Basically it comes down to "I Want It That Way" Vs. "Bye Bye Bye". Both songs were catchy but "I Want It That Way" is just the better song that everybody and their momma was singing when it first came out so the Winner here is: BSB

Best Hearthrobs: This is an important and essential part of any boy band. BSB had Nick Carter. 'Nsync had Justin Timberlake. I don't like either but Justin actually used to be cute in those days and looked better than any member of BSB so the Winner here is: 'Nsync

Better Style: Both groups had horrible fashion sense, but I can never forgive 'Nsync for showing up to The Billboard Awards (I think it was the billboard awards, oh well it was one of those shows) all dressed in ugly ass black fur coats so the Winner here is: BSB

Most likely to kick your ass: BSB all the way. Have you seen Kevin Richardson with his scary looking ass and unibrow? That dude scares me. No memeber of 'Nsync could ever compete with him, Justin especially who could never kick anybody's ass. Joey Fatone might come closest though if he sat on a BSB member but since that it is highly unlikely, the winner here is: BSB.

WINNER OVERALL: BSB biggrin

I actually love both these groups. They were so fun. I loved the days when you didn't have to prove anything or earn some sort credibility or respect to be a popular musician. Some people are so full of themselves with their "rock and roll morals" and what not. BSB and Nsync went against everything Rolling Stone tried to establish as the "rock and roll" lifestyle/way of life and I loved it. Stick it to the man!

I don't want to be rude now lol but the latter sound of BSB (from Millenium to Never Gone) isn't far removed from Jackson's Invincible, Christina Aguilera records, Britney records, etc.,etc.,etc. I mean: if you don't like BSB latter records, then you don't like modern mainstream pop at all.

BSB started as a teen-band, with stupid clips where they appeared dancing in baggy pants and surronded by histerical, brainless teen girls (the NSYNC formula), but with Millenium they started to be a "serious" pop act, with a soulful touch, more mature and complex lyrics and solid, excellent crafted pop songs. I mean, come on, have you heard the ballad "Show me the meaning of being lonely"?, this could have been a highlight on the Invincible album.

I dunno... I've never really seen the BSB dance all that much. *NSYNC is better known for their dancing, I guess.

But I will agree with the latter.
I liked them in this order: Nick, Brian, Kevin, Howie, AJ
Nick's always been my favorite since I first heard his voice. And so would start a trend of me happening to like the blonds in the boybands.

*NSYNC didn't really have any good looking guys except for Lance, even though I don't know what his voice sounds like, I still thought he was cute.
Chris would probably be 2nd in terms of "hottest", not that I could really call it that.

What i liked about both BSB and NSYNC was that they didn't try to cover up their bubblegum image. They were what they were, a boyband. Unlike today with Fall out Boy, Good Charlotte, All American Rejects, Panic at the Disco etc. They're all boybands playing up the "punk" and roughed up image.

you're forgetting The Click Five... my dad calls them a bunch of punks based on looks alone.
But their matching suits makes them resemble The Beatles.
And unlike BSB & *NSYNC, they actually play in a band (there's a drummer, two guitarists, a keyboardist and a bassist). And they harmonize like The Beatles and the Beach Boys.
I didn't get into any of those groups you mentioned, just never bothered.
I have a hatred for Panic At the Disco! cuz the lead singer's voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard... and I'll stick by my theory that they copied off The Click Five and are riding the mainstream path of popularity.

The Click Five was the best new thing I got into last year. I was starting to make my transition to my favoring of people that play their own instruments & write their own music. (Ben Romans of The Click Five co-wrote nearly all of the songs and even write 2 of the songs on their first album).
And b4 people start throwing comments in, they're coming up with a new album this summer.
