ARCADE FIRE...MOST IMPORTANT GROUP OF THE DECADE ???

i believe with the great reviews that their new album is getting and their debut album already a classic...arcade fire have become the most important group of the decade...critically acclaimed and now about to go huge on both sides of the atlantic commercially with the new album 'neon bible' ...i cant see any other group having the same impact at the moment..

Of course they are not the most important band of the 00´s. They are hyped at the moment. Their records are nice, but not masterpieces. If you think of important eg. influential bands of the 00´s, what about Radiohead, Muse, Coldplay or The White Stripes? It´s all a matter of taste...

i believe once the decade ends..arcade fire will be seen as making the biggest inpact because i think their music will live on...the hype isnt coming from the record companies..its coming from the people who are listening to their amazing songs and going to their gigs.....the white stripes could give them a run for their money but i dont find them as interesting musically as the arcade fire.....radioheads 'ok computer' album is brilliant but they bore me to death with most of their albums since then and i dont compare the other two anywhere near the level of af....
but as you say....each to his own smile

broken social scene should be getting the same kind of praise as the arcade fire gets.

I totally agree. They're the first rock band in awhile to be making music that fuses real mainstream appeal with politics, without being wimpy or soft. Neon Bible is definitely in my top 10 of the decade so far. Most of those band you mentioned peaked in the late 90s, IMO.

And Sass, while I love Broken Social Scene, they're a little too willfully weird for me to rank in the same rank for as Arcade Fire.

i think someone must have snuck a john mayer album into my arcade fire CD case because what i'm hearing really isn't doing a whole lot for me. it's okay. it's serviceable. it's fine. but i don't see this changing the landscape of music or being important or anything like that. i mean, the lead singer guy sings like he's trying to tell bono his hair's on fire, but other than that, i don't get the overwhelming urgency. then again, i have no heart. shrug

I mean, there's nothing really forward thinking or revolutionary about them. In fact, it's even kind of regressive, reaching back to some weird fusion of Springsteen, Spector and Dead Can Dance. But what puts it over for me are the lyrics--one of the best expressions of conflicted feelings about America. I guess I'm not sure they're going to be all that influential, but I do know I love the heck out of them.

If any band can make anybody happy, then yay for that band, but to me, listening to Coldplay reminds me of flipping through a J.Crew catalog. For a minute I think I might kinda like some shoes or a sweater from them, but by the time I'm done flipping through it, I'm totally non-plussed.

I love "Funeral", and I'm warming to "Neon Bible". "Intervention" rocks.

That said, I think the hysteria over Arcade Fire is a little silly. Personally I think another Canadian indie rock band, The Dears, is superior.

I wouldn't really call Radiohead a band of the 00s. I'd like to forget about their recent work, actually. Arcade Fire is pretty good but it's too early for "most important of the decade" to be granted. They're pretty original, considering what else is out there--endless Coldplay-clones, Alice in Chains-clones, etc.

is there anything musically that hasnt been done before??..its the way they have taken all the influences that are apparent in their music and making something that is musically invigorating and uplifting ...

I must not have a heart either, because I don't hear anything remotely interesting (or even appealing) in Arcade Fire.

I think the next few years will decide it, but The Arcade Fire are definitely worthy of consideration.

U2 have been more important this decade and they've been around for 30 years.

My guess is that most critics will consider The White Stripes as the #1 most influential and critically acclaimed band.

White Stripes
Strokes
Franz
Arcade Fire
U2
Coldplay (as much as I think they're lame)
Radiohead

I think this is a short list of the bands to consider.

I think I should add Gorillaz to the list of important groups this decade. Perhaps Yeah Yeah Yeahs too.
