I think I should add Gorillaz to the list of important groups this decade. Perhaps Yeah Yeah Yeahs too.

Interpol were bigger than either of them.

I think this is a short list of the bands to consider.

This is easily the most boring decade ever. sigh

Not Gorillaz. The debut sold like 6 million worldwide, and Demon Days is not far behind. Plus, both got major critical love and defied genre categorization. Interpol is another one to add, though, for sure.

YYY doesn't seem that unique. But not many bands this decade do.

I like most of those bands. It's just that not many of them have something new to offer.

I'm probably one of the few weirdos that hated 'em starting out but now think they're getting better.

I'd say they're more unique than most current bands. I know you think Karen O has a Chrissie Hynde thing going on, but the music isn't similar at all. "Maps" is one of the classics of the decade for sure.

They seem more Banshees to me at this point.

a band to watch: EDITORS

Their debut "The Back Room" is one of my most-played discs of the 00's.

there are some fun bands being tossed around as the most important of the decade, but if they're the most important, then this isn't really a very important decade, really, is it? boxed

That's kinda how I feel.

It feels like for the most part, my favorites from the 70's - 90's are coming up with more interesting things this decade than the new kids.

For the most part, the best albums of the 00's have come from older, more established bands, and solo artists. There hasn't been a Nirvana or Radiohead to blast off the doors of this decade.... and probably won't be.

Yuck. On a sidenote, me and my roommate seem to run into Karen O and co. all the time in L.A.

"Maps" is killer, but the problem is that they haven't been able to put out a consistently good album, IMHO.

While I don't agree wholeheartedly, I can get with this. My favorite music from this decade has either been from established or new solo artists.

U2 have been more important this decade and they've been around for 30 years.

My guess is that most critics will consider The White Stripes as the #1 most influential and critically acclaimed band.

White Stripes
Strokes
Franz
Arcade Fire
U2
Coldplay (as much as I think they're lame)
Radiohead

I think this is a short list of the bands to consider.

I like all those but Coldplay. They are stadium-rock with very little originality, IMHO. Radiohead continues to be miles ahead of anything Coldplay could ever aspire to. I love Franz Ferdinand, U2 continues to make great records... The Strokes are kinda losing their novelty a little bit. Love Arcade Fire, but the hype is over the top.

Bloc Party is another band to watch... their new album is really really good

i think popular music has become so niche-y that it's all but impossible to have an act with mass appeal or any kind of overarching zeitgeist that would make much of a splash other than being the flavor of the week. everyone's talking about fall out boy right now. they're supposed to be the HUGE thing right now, but it's all media! they're on a cell phone ad and they're on the cover of rolling stone. it's so manufactured. i don't think a band with the potential impact of nirvana would be given a chance in the current climate. they'd be second-guessed right out the door. sad.

They are a sorta Joy Division-brought-into-the-21st-century type band. I really like them, but them i'm a nut for anything 80's cool

If you want a taste of their stuff, try "Evil" from iTunes. AWESOME song.

Most definitely. The shelf life of these bands keeps getting smaller, whereas the hype keeps getting bigger. I think the Arctic Monkeys album was named the 5th best British album of all time before it even came out by NME.

i agree. there's so much out there right now... so much noise. too much information for someone to really break through and change things. the internet has given us way more music than we can process, lots of great bands, but... maybe it's all been done before. maybe there isn't anywhere new to go. depressing thought....

Good point about the hype. I think some of these publications are trying to drum up hype to bring some excitement and enthusiasm back... but i think folks see through it and rebel against the hype to some degree.

They're one of the few post-punk/new wave revivalist bands that I haven't lost interest in.

if you ever get a chance to catch Editors, check them out... they are similar stylistically but I think they have more potential long-term. They have a knack for great songs. And awesome b-sides, which is always cool biggrin
