The Stooges - The Weirdness I've just heard the new Stooges album - The Weirdness - their first since Raw Power in 1973.
And it's absolute crap. Avoid. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Put it this way, it's really really fucking dreadful. The opening song, Trollin' has the following lines: "I see your hair as energy, My dick is growing tall as a tree". 50 Cent is more eloquent, no? The "highlight" of the album is a Search & Destroy parody called "My Idea of Fun". Chorus: "My idea of fun, Is killin' everyone". [Edited 2/22/07 8:49am] There are three sides to every story. This is a shame, because Iggy's a highly intelligent, literate guy, who's written some superb lyrics in the past. [Edited 2/22/07 9:12am] There are three sides to every story. Especially because the album Bowie produced "The Idiot", Apart from the first three Stooges albums, and Live TKO, Iggy's best albums are, in my opinion: The Idiot Lust For Life New Values Brick By Brick Avenue B Blah Blah Blah Of these, Avenue B is the most unique, in that it consists of - mostly - mid-tempo semi-acoustic songs musing on mortality and broken relationships. It has a couple of sometimes very funny spoken word interludes. It sold next nothing. The rest are either dire (Naughty Little Doggie, Beat Em Up, Instinct, Soldier, Party) or so-so (Skull Ring, American Ceasar, Kill City, TV Eye Live). The one, unclassifiable album he made is Zombie Birdhouse, which is just plain fucking bizarre. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Everything until now has had me intrigued for this album. I thought Steve Albini would make a nice addition.

Ah, c'mon Anx, Avenue B was an incredible album, a real blindsider. You can't argue with Avenue B and Long Distance, real heartbreakers both and crooned with a sensitivity Shades only hinted at. Plus there was all that very bleak, cruel humour going on in there - Nazi Girlfriend and She Called Me Daddy ("I was always ashamed she read Cosmopolitan - I shoulda been proud of her"). Major drag, you say? It's the portrait of the artist as an old man, the essence of all those doomy, self-questioning, reflective Sinatra torch albums rolled into one. Even his cover of Shakin' All Over sounds like the cry of a man who's run out of viagra in a brothel. It's middle aged angst, Anx. It'll get us both one day. Oh, and Avenue B also sounds absolutely nothing like anything Iggy's done before or dared do since. It's unique. Plus it's his best album since Lust For Life and the last decent thing he's released. Revisit and listen without prejudice. [Edited 2/22/07 13:40pm] There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Yeah, I expected a lot more than this dud, Stooges-parody, given the pedigree. The only vaguely interesting thing about this steaming turd of a records featuring a 60 year old singing about his dick "turning into a tree", is a song called "Mexican Guy", about his girlfriend dumping him for the titular guy (because his dick turns into a rocket - no, I made that up). You'll be sorely disappinted if you're expecting Funhouse 2. What you'll get is a turgid, anonymous, moronic metal album devoid of ambition, personality and memorable tunes. You'll remember it for its idiotic lyrics and the fact that the people currently trading under the name The Stooges are nothing but zombie impersonators. And remember this - the real Stooges inspired The Ramones, The New York Dolls and punk. This bunch will inspire you to this act of musical revolution: watching the CD spin out of your window as you use it as a frisbee. [Edited 2/22/07 13:48pm] There are three sides to every story. [Edited 2/22/07 13:40pm] i liked this album better when david bowie recorded it and called it "hours...". i thought "avenue b" was awkward, like he was revealing to the listener that he'd been declawed and had his balls cut off. that's not how i want to hear iggy. and i certainly don't wanna hear him blather on with spoken word crap throughout an album, either. i mean, i get what he was going for, but i felt really uncomfortable listening to it. and even though bowie's middle-age manifesto was more than a little heavy on production gloss, it had the right balance of distance and intimacy for me. i think the very reasons you liked that album were the exact same reasons i was turned off. then he went all blink 182 or whateverthehell they were called, and i just figured we lost the iggster for good.
