Earth Wind and Fire tribute CD "Interpretations" due March 27

Stax celebrates 50 years with Earth Wind and Fire-inspired CD
In celebration of Stax's 50th anniversary in 2007,Concord Records will release the first new album on the revitalized Stax imprint with the all-star project Interpretations:Celebrating The Music of Earth Wind and Fire. The 10-song album (in stores March 27,2007) fits snugly into the legacy of Stax with first-rate artists including singer/songwriter Angie Stone (a 20+ years veteran of soul and hip-hop who is also the new Stax label's first signee),self-contained sextet Mint Condition,Meshell Ndegeocello (a mercurial all-around singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist),Lalah Hathaway (the golden-voiced daughter of esteemed soul man Donny Hathaway) and the legendary Chaka Khan. The project is rounded out by neo-soul stalwarts Ledisi,Musiq,The Randy Watson Experience featuring Bilal and Dwele who represent the evolution of soul music at its most illustrious and positive.

"When we (Kalimba Records) took the concept to Concord," Maurice White shares,"they were very receptive and I felt confident that they would get behind the project and market it effectively.I am honored that this project was chosen as the one to re-launch a lengendary record label for Black music".

The album's first single is an interpretation of "September" by platinum contemporary gospel artist Kirk Franklin,a man among the chosen few to successfully return more spiritual music to the secular airwaves.Dedicated to the people of New Orleans,Mississippi and Alabama,Franklin's rendition of "September" reinforces faith and fortitude using the seasons as a metaphor for the sunshine and rain of life.It will impact at radio on January 22,2007.

Isn't that the band that performed "Greatest Love of All" in Coming to America?

I heard a rough mix of Chaka's take on Shining Star a while ago.
IMO she did it justice and then some. Track was slammin'.

To be honest, her song is the only one I'm really looking forward to.Her amazing vocals could take a song like "Shining Star" to new heights.

Well I hear Mint is re-doing "After the Love". I have confidence that Mint,Angie ,Lalah ?uest and Poyser(RW exp.) will deliver good covers of some hits. Me'shell will probably rock an obscure EWF joint

To be perfectly honest, I am thoroughly bored by any of the new EWF albums and the tributes are especially dull. I'm just not a fan of the gazillion guests and 4 dozen hip-hop gooks sitting in and utterly ruining a classic track. Unless they can find more live stuff from the early to mid 70s, I'll be dialed out on these guys. Love 'em much and I hope Concord/Stax gets more releases out, but this stuff bores me.

PFunkjazz...I would interested to know what was the LAST EWF album or album track that you thought was still relevant and interesting. I know from reading your reviews and comments from over on the old OneNation board that you didnt hold much interest in their more "pop" oriented tracks....I assume you probably mean stuff like 'September", "Fantasy" or "Lets Groove".

I have to admit that I have not yet heard one remake of either a classic EWF joint or one more obscure that even comes close to being passable.....It may be that there really isnt any room to improve on their stuff....Classic EWF is as close to perfection in many instances that it is near to impossible to improve on the vocals, the percussion, the horns....the production...whatever.....

I have to admit,I'm not all that excited about this project.I'll check it out though, and hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised.I wish Maurice would go back into the vaults and release some more outtakes, demos and live stuff from the 70s.

I'd be be more excited about this project if it featured more Old School artists.Imagine Stevie Wonder doing a funky remake of "In The Stone".....or Mavis Staples doing a powerful version of "That's The Way Of The World"...or Patti Labelle taking "Fantasy" to new heights....or Boz Scaggs tackling a song like "After The Love Is Gone".These artists are EW&F's peers and they were actually around back then, sharing chart space with EW&F.I think they have a better connection to this music.

SoulAlive...that would definitely make for some interesting musical interpretations...no doubt.....but I guess the only thing would be that the names of those artists would probably only resonate with those of us that follow real music...and not what you might hear on the radio and tv these days.....we havfe issues with media recognising these legends themselves when they release new material...much less if an older generation were to cover their stuff....it is a vicious circle for sure....

Other people like "September" and "Let's Groove" more than me. "Fantasy is great, but it's really late in the game. Date me back to the Charles Stepney period (before '76). The idea of EWF peers (or even older artists) doing the tribute appeals much more to me than anything from anybody younger can offer.
