Not the kinda news you want to hear on Christmas Day. One of the biggest legends of the 20th Century. Would be nice to see a comment from the purple one given the fact that JB was the greatest overall influence on him, probably for the discipline as much as the music.

This is really sad. sad bawl sad But God bless him and Godspeed to the Godfather of Soul. RIP, Soul Brother Number One. dove angel

I keep thinking about how his soul made his final exit. The Lord's angels came out with his cape to take him home, and James Brown goes out with them, only to run back to the microphone to sing one last verse. He will be greatly missed.

This was a man on par with Jesus Christ in terms of his impact on the world, Like Jesus he didn't ever get anywhere close to his due while he was alive. I guess its appropriate he passed on Jesus' B'day. Peace to Brother James and a huge "thank you" for putting things on the one. What my life would have been without you I dare not imagine.

It really is hard to imagine a musical world without JB. I don't know about the rest of u, but probably one of the things that cemented my appreciation of Prince for the long haul was the window he gave me to other performers, influences etc. I probably would not ever have got as into JB as I did without the Prince connection.
Like Anx, JB was on my radar from around '84 with the Blues Brothers and Living in America, and this developed into a near obsession as I became enamoured of the funk: hunting out JB records in 2nd-hand stores (I'll never forget the day I found Hell in '86!), the release of Jungle Groove which still holds pride of place in my CD collection, seeing the Godfather live in '87 and '88 - twice!! - in an intimate
venue in Sydney (Celina's), receiving the "autobiography" for my 17th b'day and devouring it, being dismayed and disappointed by the arrest and jail, amused and bemused by the "Free James Brown" campaign (never had a sticker).
JB's been a significant part of my life - hell, discovering and sharing James Brown appreciation cemented the closeness of my relationship with my best friend since high-school!
I guess in a way the real James has been gone for me for a long time. But the knowledge that he was still somewhere doing something was nevertheless a subconscious comfort.
It's a sad day but, shit, with Funky Drummer in every second song, with 1st and 2nd hand disciples like GC, Prince, ?uestlove etc. plus with the Apollo shows, Jungle Groove, Hell and even the JBs Monorail in my collection at home, he's not likely to fade away completely (like he did in that wierd guest appearance on Miami Vice - any1 remember that????)
RIP

Dear James,

U embodied stage prescence
U embodied character
U were the definition of "X Factor"
U really worked harder than any other performer for their audience,
with consistency and integrity from the beginning to the end...

But is by no means the end - U're legacy lives on...
U inspired generations, U inspired me.

Thank U James Brown. pray

I love this pictures James here is being embraced and loved by the legends that HE!!!! produced. Prince of course being one of them as well. I'm glad to know that Mr. Brown was truley embrasced and thanked for ALL that he is given. This is the greatest lost to music in the past 50 plus years.

Heard this at 5am and I still can't believe it. Christmas Day!

RIP Godfather. Your light shined brightly for all the world to enjoy. Your music and message impacted myself and my generation's coming of age greatly. I feel fortunate to have seen you live twice back in the days when you performed with Maceo, Fred and the rest of the JBs. My prayers are with your family and friends at this difficult time...

Soul Brother #1 is now pullin a crowd on the "night shift".
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
