Rest in peace, Mr. Brown. I count myself fortunate to have seen him in concert two times.

I was just playing a box set of FUNK songs from the 60s and 70s the other day. When a James Brown song cane on, my five-year-old son piped up from the back seat "Hey! I **reeaaaaalllly* like **this** song. Who's singin' it?" I then launched into about a 2 minute explanation of who JB was and how his talent influenced Prince. He then asked if we could go see James Brown and I said that would be a wonderful idea.

sad

don't know how i'll break the news to him

How am I even supposed to feel when perhaps THE most influential artist of the modern era dies?

This is an unfathomable loss.

No words.

He was a giant in the music industry, and probably Prince's greatest influence.

Without J.B. there would not be the Prince we all know and love.

Rest In Peace James. May the happiness that eluded you in life find its way to your heart now.

Without JB, no MJ, P, nor Hip-hop period!

I've driven on the street named after him in Augusta. I had the chance to see him but missed out! Such a terrible loss!

RIP brother!

very rare for prince to acknowledge someone's passing so publicly...but prince owes JB a lot, so it's very fitting.

I woke up this morning and checked the internet for news. The first thing that I saw was "James Brown, dead at 73." I am in shock and very saddened. My parents bought tickets for me and my siblings' first ever concert to see James Brown. My father wanted us to see this man in action and it is something that I still remember today. My favorite song of his is still "It's a Man's World." During my senior high school party, that song was on constant rotation. We probably played it over 10 times. It was all people basically wanted to hear. Yesterday, I just read that Michael was going to work with James on his upcoming album, and I was truly looking forward to seeing and hearing my two favorite musicians working together. I am just so glad that MJ got a chance to present his idol with the Lifetime Achievement during the BET awards several years ago. Michael teared up when speaking of how much James has influenced him and his music. I love the fact that Michael ALWAYS gave credit to JB every chance that he got.

James will truly be missed. A MUSICAL GIANT is gone. May He Rest In Peace!!!!!

nod Exactly. This is the most significant loss that modern music has seen...and the really sad thing is that if the pnumonia didn't take him, he would have gone on...73 is not that old.

I'm glad I got to see him perform at least once.

pray for James. rose

as a fellow Georgian I am deeply hurt by this tragedy and was crying when I heard the news...so many of our black legends are dying and its heartbreaking especially since two legendary ones from my state passed away (Ray Charles, Ossie Davis)...life is way too short, and I regret I never got to see the genius in person...I pray for his family and I hope he made it well into Heaven sad sad sad

If I know Prince, (okay, I don't, but anyway) he's probably jammin his JB grooves as we speak. Just the right inspiration. That's what I did while I was cooking today.

It's just like someone else posted. You could be at a party back in the day and no matter how dead it was all you had to do was put on some JB records and the party was on! And he was still going strong at age 73. Wow!

There will never be another like the Godfather.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
