Rappers are making me angry!

Why must they sample everything?
ONly 2 songs I just knew they wouldn't , shouldn't and couldn't touch
and that are the songs --I Call Your Name, by the group Switch,
which people keep saying that is El Debarge singing and it's really
his older brother, Bobby. The other song is PRince's ADORE, why
must they sample and remix everything?

Maybe I shoud be mad at the artist for giving them the permission to
sample in the first place.
confused

No creativity at all.
Sampling should have been banned after the "king of sampling" P-Diddy
sampled all of the best songs out there.

Now I can never listen to my favorite song "I Call Your Name " the same
ever again, my ears have been traumatized.

Please Prince don't let anyone
touch, sample or remix the song--Adore!!
eek

I feel much better now. biggrin

It's really a tricky thing. Everyone should get their due copyrightwise, but sampling is an art. There's a huge difference in the way a Madlib, Premier or (RIP) J Dilla rocks a sample and the way hit-pop producers do it. Artists like the former group really reinvent it, much like jazz artists did with pop standards in their heyday. Artists in the latter group simply steal a song and pantomime over it.

I see your point. But can you really say that "I Call Your Name" should've
been touched? Can you hear someone rapping to the beat of ADORE ? feeling ill

This is what I mean,

"Lean with it! Now Lean with it! and the background music-singing "Until the end of time
I be there for you."

Now, the Notorious B.I.G.'s sample of "Stay With Me" for his "One More Chance" Remix is nothing short of superb. But I guess I haven't heard the track you're referring to.

"Lean with it! Now Lean with it! and the background music-singing "Until the end of time

Put it in Dilla's, Doom's, Madlib's, ?uestlove's or Premier's capable hands, you may be surprised. For example, the cat that did the Prince/Jay-Z mashup a coupla years back totally freaked a "Sign O' The Times" sample,

You're right though, in the wrong hands, criminal behavior ensues.

Sampling is one of the main reasons I hate rap.... They don't have musical ability or creativity required to make their own music... It's far easier to simply steal from others... Now they are starting to sample samples! The worst part is... These kids don't know the original songs.... They think they're fav rapper come up with "fresh beats" intstead of them regurgitating something 10 or 15 years old!

I was hoping for a more thoughtful and informed response. Name me some well known mainstream rappers, who are masterful musicians and don't use ANY SAMPLES... I doubt there's many.... And even if there were, It doesn't make my statements LIES.... Just "incorrect" or maybe "Uninformed".

You are exactly right. They don't have the ability to come up with a melody of their own and, even if they could, they don't have the skills to play the new melody in their head on some instruments.

It's not just lack of talent and creativity though, there's something bigger than they are which is keeping them on top. Anyone with any creativity or musical ability is going to be kept out by these major corporations such as record labels, video channels, and radio stations because it would threaten the cheap music that is being made.

Many rap acts of the past had talent, creativity, and musical ability but not the ones of today and it's been that way for 15 years.

It's not about just not listening to rap or even shit hop in general. If there was something else on R&B radio to listen to, it would be that simple. However, since there isn't anything else except shit hop on R&B radio.....bitch on people, bitch on!

Prince was sucking rap's dick

Sucking dick is a compliment. If you had said eating pussy, that would have been an insult.

Prince makes me angry and should never attempt hip hop, cuz he sucks at it

I agree that Prince should never attempt shit hop....not because he sucks at it but because it's no talent bullshit to begin with. When he attempts it, he's selling out because he's FAR above it.

As a longtime hip-hop head and devoted Prince listener, I got bones to pick with both sides of this argument.

vainandy said:

That's a gross overgeneralization. When you look at cats like Madlib and J Dilla, with their backgrounds as either musicians or producers, they can find a melody. In any event, hip-hop was not, I repeat not, designed to necessarily be a musical art form. it was designed to find a dope beat, not to spit mediocre rhymes over an entire instrumental track.

In fact, many jazz, funk and soul artists gained new fans because their work was sampled by hip-hop acts.

Many rap acts of the past had talent, creativity, and musical ability but not the ones of today and it's been that way for 15 years.

No way that's true. You just don't like what's come out the last 15 years. There are dozens of hip-hop acts that have come out since the early 90's that deserve acclaim. Don't discredit where discredit isn't due.

Could it be that those artists ripped off Prince before Prince "ripped them off"? You dare not mention Bobby Brown, whose "Rock Witcha" constitutes grand larceny for its blatant ripoff of "Do Me, Baby." "Gett Off" sounding like BBD? Come on, mayne. You know better. That is a quintessential Prince record.

It's clear Prince tried to incorporate New Jack and hip-hop into much of his earlier music. He was following some trends. Much of Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds and Pearls, and Symbol sounds like New Jack/Soul II Soul/hip-hop. Prince needs to leave that rhyming alone, unless he's working with a true MC.

BOBBY BROWN - MY perogative

Janet Jackson - Control
http://www.youtube.com/wa...uRvcl2shcU

Prince - New Power Generation
href=http://www.singingfool.com/Music/Video/NEW_POWER_GENERATION/T00611141.htm>NEW POWER GENERATION

THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE, between Control looks like a concert stage performance, My Perogative looks like a club performance, with it's dark blue scenery, and NPG video looks exactly like it with it's dark blue lighting, and in the club sense, he was biting Bobby's video hard, let your love stop acting like he wasn't a swagger jacker
