I'm taken aback by how much venom people have for Gwen. Does not compute.

So....can you tell us what's to love? Her music has no substance, no melody, and she can't sing live.

No melody is just flat-out wrong. Unless you're talking about the new single. No substance? Who defines that? No Doubt does pretty well on their tours, so somebody likes her singing live. I saw her show last year and she was fine--I'm usually good at spotting lip-synchers.

I've listened to the new album, and nope, it's definitely a correct assessment.

Unless you're talking about the new single.

One of the many amelodious tracks.

No substance? Who defines that?

Gwen used to write lyrics with some sort of meaning and worth. Now she name-drops her fashion line. You figure it out.

Gwen has never been a strong live singer. She is almost always off-key, and this goes back to her No Doubt days. And her recent live performances are scrate awful in terms of vocals, so...

Wtf have you been listening to? If you think the new album has melody then you need your ears examined or a serious music lesson. This garbage Gwen has spewed out deserves to have venom shot at. It's a peice of shit and she should be aware of this if she wants to continue and make music.

I'm not talking about the new album, actually. Her last album was great and had plenty of melodies.

What does that even mean? Telling me to "figure it out" doesn't mean anything to me, to be honest.

Don't agree. It sounds like you are judging her now based on this new album and her appearances doing the awful single from it. Or am I way off-base? I don't like the new album, either.

Exactly. How anyone can compare something like Don't Speak or Bathwater to Yummy is beyond me. I think it makes it evident of the other band member's influence on the lyrical side of No Doubt. I think everyone always assumed Gwen wrote all the lyrics but her 2 solo albums shows she had at least a little help.

Here's what I think happened. Gwen took the best solo song she could come up with (WYWF), made a killer video and released it as a single. And it went nowhere. And I think she was damn pissed. So she starts on the hip-hop influenced songs, with Rich Girl and finally with Hollaback, which is huge because the label bought hundreds of thousands of downloads.

So with this record she needs to come up with something ultra-fast so she goes with the Hollaback template because it worked last time, even though it was a novelty hit and should have stayed novelty. It's no coincidence that this record veers sharply away from new wave (the only new wave tracks are castoffs from LAMB sessions since she couldn't be bothered to wait long enough to cut a new album completely). I think she deliberately made a play for commercialism and nothing more here.

I think you're on the money there. "What You Waiting For" is the best thing she's ever been involved with, but it went nowhere. "Rich Girl" and "Hollaback" were the big hits from the album. "Cool" only did well because it was on the tail of "Hollaback". "Luxurious" also did pretty well, at least in the US. "Crash" also flopped, not surprisingly, as it is more new wave.

eek that was a single?! i love that one

I could tolerate some of the stuff on her last album. But I'm mostly talking about her new joint.

What does that even mean? Telling me to "figure it out" doesn't mean anything to me, to be honest.

It's very simple. If she was writing intelligent lyrics 6 years ago, but is now writing "THEY LIKE THE WAY THE LAMB GO ACROSS MY SHIRT", she IS LACKING SUBSTANCE. lol

You're off-base, as I've been watching No Doubt perform live since the mid-90's. Her live vocals used to be adequate - nothing special. Sometimes she would be terribly off-key, though. Over the past few years, she is ALWAYS off-key. It's just awful.

I've actually heard the new album a few times now. It's a love it/hate it affair. The ones I like seem to be the new wave leftovers from LAMB. "Early Winter" is incredible to me. I also really enjoy "4 in the Morning", "U Started It" and "Wonderful Life". On the other hand, there are songs like "Now That You Got It" and "Breaking Up" which are utterly terrible.

Only liked a few songs and mildly tolerated some others. Don't know where the so-called "maturity" of this CD -- no, I won't call it an album -- kicks in, but it just lacks a core. It feels hollow and meanders too much. There's a disjointed, Harry-esque playfulness in some of the tracks (like "Yummy") that Gwen could really work if she had the wherewithal to flesh it out, but the Neptunes and other hiphop producers carried *it* too much for her here.

LAMB was better in comparison and felt like more of a statement, but lately Gwen, the solo artist, has been irking me -- which is unfortunate 'cause I really used to root for her.
