there was a lot of stuff that came out this year that i liked okay, but very little that i was super enthusiastic about. i'm ready for some new bands to come along and kick my ass - i'm tired of getting the same albums from the same bands i've been listening to for the past 10 or 20 years. i mean, they're good, but i'm ready for the next insane genius to come along.

I discovered for the first time this year: Camera Obscura, Neko Case, Joan As Policewoman and The Pipettes. Their latest albums make up four of my top five of 2006 so I think they are ALL über-terrific. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Yep. I just saw them live on Saturday night in Cologne (in a small venue ). It fucking rocked!!!!! I was really surprised at how good they sounded live actually. I was expecting to be, well, not very impressed to be honest. All those YouTube clips floating around on the internet of their live shows really don't do them justice. It was awesome. I even bought a t-shirt (which I never do since I make my own ) which really says a lot. I was going to start a thread about the show, but I figured "why bother" because I know they have few fans on this site. So I'm guessing you liked the show?

Joan is part of Antony and The Johnsons. 'Real Life' is her solo debut. It's quite possible I'm loving these acts because they are new to me. Former raves Deadsy and Nellie Mckay released follow-up albums this year and although I really liked them, I'm not recommending them to everyone left and right like I did their debuts. I can't quite tell yet if the novelty has worn off or if the albums are just sophomore slumps.

So then I got the album, and I just loved it. There is perhaps only one song on the whole thing that I don't really care for. I had to add them to my MySpace friends even. I'm a hopeless dork. Did you get the Cure and Depeche Mode remasters. Those are hot. no! I love the Cure AND Depeche mode. Are they expensive? I have the Speek N Spell remaster and it does sound better, but I wasn't blown away buy it or anything.

The Cure ones are especially impressive with the bonus discs and liner notes. The most recent batch of "Blue Sunshine", "The Top", "The Head on the Door" and "Kiss Me" are so fun, vibrant and thorough. I really couldn't ask for anything more from these releases. The Depeche Mode bonus discs are cool too, but they're DVD Audio so you can't play them on your regular CD player. Each one comes with a half hour documentary about the album and really gets in depth with the recording process, what they were after, the tour, the videos, etc. If you're a geek like me, you'll totally get off on that stuff. "Violator" sounds so good it's SICK.

wow i've been trying to come up with my list of the Best of 2006, and it's reallllly hard this year. This has been a TERRIBLE year for new music.
But my pick for best album will definitely be Bob Dylan's "Modern Times" - - it's as good as anything he's done. Here are some of my other faves... this is an incomplete list, just some off the top of my head: Thom Yorke - The Eraser Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers Prince - 3121 Pink - I'm Not Dead Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium Pet Shop Boys - Fundamental Paul Simon - Surprise Neil Young - Living With War Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam Morrissey - Ringleader of the Tormentors Hot Chip - The Warning Hard-Fi - Stars of CCTV Grandaddy - Just Like the Fambly Cat The Flaming Lips - At War With the Mystics Elton John - The Captain & The Kid Slayer - Christ Illusion

You're just more adventurous and dedicated to sussing out new things than most. Maybe, but the downside to all that new music buying means I don't have many catalog albums which is something I'm trying to rectify. You already know about my classic Bowie splurge earlier this year and I recently did the same with 70s Stevie Wonder. Blender just reviewed every Velvet Underground album in their latest issue which has me excited. I kinda want to get all those too. The only VU studio album I have is the first one. I thought 2004 was really bad. I could only think of six records to put on my best of list that year. This year I have about 15--same as last year.
