i think you're joking...i hope you're joking. lol

either way, who cares who likes it and who doesn't. we can all agree that she's made better records but i think we can all agree that she's made worse (even if there's only one that is worse). wink

the record will probably drop to the upper 20s or lower 30s but that's to be expected from any record that has such little support. i'm so over these spoiled pop stars who just don't want to do any work to promote their music (paging mrs. dupri and mr. nelson). i really think if she had agressively promoted this record it would have lasted in the top 20 much longer.

not to bring her up but...madonna did a lot of small club performances for confessions, tons of interviews (talking about more than one topic), and worked her ass off supporting the cd. it paid off. janet makes the rounds before the cd comes out and expects it to keep up its own momentum. to make things worse, her people marketed her in a totally wrong direction. then she doesn't get out there and fix it.

it leaves me thinking she's lazy, disinterested, or just a poor business woman.

Isel

I wrote this in another thread, so I thought I'd repeat it here.

I don't think it sucks, and I don't necessarily hate it: it's just not my favorite Janet cd. To tell you the truth, I really don't like Janet's vocal quality on this particular cd. To me, her voice sounds a bit "shriller" and/or "thinner" than usual on some songs against the "heaviness" of the production. And for that reason, I really have a more difficult time listening to it. That contrast really bothers me--like nails on a chalkboard. A while back someone said that he/she could imagine someone else singing to do the songs more justice. I would have to agree with that. I'm not suggesting Janet's voice is "bad," however. I'm just saying for my taste, the particular production just doesn't compliment her voice. Really many of the songs themselves are great. IMO, I just don't think Janet has the vocal "power" to really get the most of them--not that she needs a belt voice but just stronger and more resonant--a better quality of voice maybe more mature in the upper range for some of the songs. Songs like "Daybreak" and "Enjoy" are fine, but "Love 2 Love,"This Body," "With You" even "Do It To Me"have this "thin" vocal quality never really bothering me before about Janet. I noticed it after the first listen, and I've listened to the cd many more times--that quality--so distinctive in the past--really grates my nerves now. Also, "So Excited" lyrically and musically is just boring--not that it's bad to me. It's just boring to me. COM--I've never liked that song. To me it's sort of cheesy. Plus, I'm a little bored with the duets.

Also, it's more of a "chill" cd--which is fine. Other than "So Excited," I really don't think there are a lot of mid to uptemp dance songs.

I've always been a huge Janet fan. I even liked DJ. But for all of these reasons, plus just not appealing to musical taste, 20 Y.O. is only OK for me.

Sorry... sad sad Obviously, all of the above is just my opinion. So many people really love the cd, so I respect that, too. It's really all a matter of taste, and sometimes where a person is at a point in time.

Believe me... I've really wanted to love it. I've really tried to love it. It's difficult to be a fan of an artist but not really enjoy a particular cd. It's happened to me with Prince, too. It's happened to me with the Chili Peppers: I don't really like Stadium Aracadium. It just happens sometimes. And I really wanted Janet's cd after the last era to be this huge, huge hit. I was really hoping that it would be a huge hit even though I didn't particularly "get it."

Since you seem ready to rumble, I'll bite. smile

It's a tuneless mess of an album, a desperate attempt to reclaim her R&B fanbase that's been slowly eroding over the years. Even the much-praised "So Excited" is an unexciting dribble of a song. There's no excitement, there's no energy, nothing. Her once liberating sex-as-expression lyrics have devolved into sex-as-power-grab. Beats, keybs, vocal production--all sound half-baked and truly uninspired. One of the worst albums of the year.

I'll tell you this. I think it's better than the Janet 1993 release. That shit was so overblown. Hell Damita Jo was better than Janet. Janet has the type of catalogue enough now to have some sleeper hits and some crap. Im saying Janet was crap. Again, Thats The Way Love Goes, and If were the best things on Janet (maybe Throb too). The other shit Because of Love etc was nothing great trust me. At least 20 YO is more consistent vibe and feel overall. 20 YO is a good Janet cd period. Fuck what ya heard...or "haven't heard" as Badujunkie said.

Well, by worst, I mean most disappointing. I like Janet. I even play Damita Jo sometimes. I couldn't make it all the way through this one a second time.

Most disappointing is correct. I would NEVER listen to stuff like Weird Al so I can't comment on it. This cd should have been much better than it is when u consider the quality of the last one Damita Jo.

Listen, not trying to be mean. I don't like the CD, why is that so hard to believe? that don't mean I hate janet.

what happened to the days when a good album was a good album and the artist didn't have to whore it out on every fucking late night talk show to prove it? i'm glad you like the album. shows you have taste. are we in agreement that "take care" and "love 2 love" are fucking FANTASTIC?

I like 20 YO. It's better IMO than All 4 u & Damita Jo. It flows better. I do agree that Janet should consider reinventing herself. At this stage of Janet's career, I think she is content on just making good music. Songs like Enjoy, Take Care, Daybreak, & Get It Out Me sound like future Janet classics IMO. How can she top Control, RN1814, Janet, TVR?

Honestly, after the whole 20 Y.O hype i expected somethin' drastic, something original, but all we got was a recycle of former janet tracks

i wouldn't call it a BAD album as it's generally listenable, but it doesn't live up to it's title/theme.

The only tracks i ended up spinning the record for are With You, Roll Witchu & So Excited.
