I definitely agree with you about the marriage situation. But I guess what I'm trying to get at is what is the big deal for some people if she is lying about the Super Bowl ? And I agree it's a done deal now and old news. But some appeared to be concerned that she's might be lying about it on Oprah--by insisting it was an accident? Do people think that she should just come-out and admit it wasn't an accident--that it was planned? [Edited 9/21/06 15:31pm]

Isel said: lastdecember said: Heres the first thing about this whole Superbowl issue. First of all, it was a planned thing, the scapegoating and blame games that went on were both Janet and Justins doing. Honestly niether one should have said a single word, since when do you apologize for your performance. I mean we are not talking about concert goers getting crushed and killed at a WHO concert, then alright, make apologies, but really who did Janet offend? The Superbowl crowd? which is 90% male, and most read magazines like Maxim/King/Fhm etc.. and then of course a Sports Illustrated issue where this is nothing but T&A, and of course we cant forget the cheerleaders half/naked during halftime shows, so in this respect CBS was the main problem, for caving in on this issue, but then janet was wrong for committing the worst sin as a performer and apologizing. I mean did Britney/Madonna apologize for their kiss, lets be real, this is all a game to spark sales, use media, and keep your name in the spotlight.
I definitely agree. All parties should have just kept quiet--accident or not-- for the reasons you stated. But do you think Janet looks bad now for seeming to lie about it? It's like of public figures who are caught in a lie: sometimes the lie itself is worse than the offense. I think some people are starting to lose trust in Janet for a variety of reasons. She's been rumored to not be telling the truth about things before--of course her marriage Rene being a perfect example. I don't recall anyone asking her point blank if she were married to Rene though--or at least no one asked very often. He was just always in the background. So you all think it's a big deal for Janet to be lying about the Super Bowl incident? I just think she just should have kept quiet about it, i think the public knows it wasnt an accident, and that she and justin were well aware of what was going on, as was pointed out the other night when Letterman made timberlake squrim a bit when questioned. But i think she/ or whoever told her it was a good idea to apologize was just not thinking straight, she was taking a page out of her brothers book by apologizing for a video or a performance, and in retrospect i think it was worse to speak about it, it gave it more weight. But what i am seeing with the public is that there always has to be a good guy and bad guy in these situations, and usually the female takes the brunt of it, i mean Justin ended up better than janet for this, and also looking at Nick and Jessica, Nick has been made to look like this wounded man who got dumped and Jessica the bad person, when it was Lachey who was dating Vanessa Minnillo and Kim Kardashian before the divorce was even filed, but he went on TV and cried and said he loved Jessica, and america bought it up, it seems we buy into alot of lies in these times. Yeah, it's a no win situation. And I also agree about people wanting her to say it was a stunt, but Janet is sort of backed into a corner on that one. And I agree about the double standard, too. Outside of the commercials, just look at some of the cheerleader costumes: boobs are bouncing everywhere-- just a bounce away from popping-out. lol No... the whole thing was a complete over-reaction. And I still feel badly for Janet because I'm not so sure her career is going to recover--at that's sad. It's like she has to be perfect and conform to the image the public wants, and she's not going to do that. I understand all the criticism about her sexed-up image. But the deal is that if suddenly changed--just to try to appease her critics well it would be like she was admitting defeat. In a way, she's in a no-win situation on many levels. There always has to be a scapegoat in a situation, i mean look at RB/POP singer Cassie, the whole issue of her sounding horrible live on a tv show, and yet almost everyone on that show sounds bad and everyone in her genre/age group sounds pretty bad live, so of course the blame the person and not the problem. I think janet is in a bad spot mainly because she is a "jackson", to be real if that were one girls from Danity Kane and her boob came out, it would have been news for about a week if even. As someone who experience wearing leather corsets, and patten leather corests, and vinyl corsets, and whatever kind of corest you can think of. (the joys of drag) The breastpiece had to be made to come off. The type of material that is used to make those isn't just going to rip with a single pull.... remember they are designed as fetish wear by people who beat each other up as they are having sex. and yes i have seen them in action... those of you in the bay area can check on it this weekend at Folsom Street
It was planned... just as planned as Madonna's kiss... Madonna's SEX book, Madonna's Justify My Love. Remember back to 1990 we were in the throws of the first Gulf war and Madonna was headline news they even had a speical Nightline for her to defend her position. Erotica was considered a comerical flop even though it sold 3million much lower then Like A Prayer. She failed to get any number one singles again until Take A Bow after Erotica/SEX. She was on every news show, talk show, magaizne with people declaring her carear over. The difference? Madonna didn't get her breasts out on National Network TV, and the political climate was different. Remember this administration has replaced people at the CDC who have degrees in Health and Human Services with Bibilcal Scholars and preachers who are against anything other than Absitance Only Eductation. It was a stupid move to do considering the climate of the Nation. It's not about black or white or red it's who's in control of the country... Puritcical lets save the children from sex so we can send them to war to die. Had it happened 13 years ago with the janet. album it wouldn't have been an issue. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

Doesn't anyone own a tivo? If you record'd the event you would have seen the shock on her face. When Timberfake ripped off the metal.. and exposed her breast JANET looked SHOCKED.. and it wasnt like "I am pretending to be shocked" LOOK.. It was genuine.. like "What the hell did this mofo do" Janet had been wearing that piercing since TVR days.. which would have been about 7 yrs prior to the whole fiasco. She even discussed those piercings when she appeared on OPRAH in the ninties.. It was an accident. She didn't need that attention becuz she was already on top of her game. I think she was hurt by the reaction and apologized becuz she is a humble person and didnt wanna offend anyone. Now if it was Madonna whose breast pop'd out.. I wonder if the reaction would have been the same? I dont think so. Cuz AMERICA was more offended that a black breast was exposed.. People in Texas were actually calling the police to have her arrested. This is was bananas.. It shows the "State of the world today" Some thing's never change. I used to think it was an accident until someone posted this pic on this same board in another thread: red cloth sewed to leather part, come on J how were we NOT supposed to see your breast? But I agree people should move on, had this happened in Europe people would have been like: yeah that was fun, next, nudity is so common on tv here(well in France at least),here women go on beaches topless with their own kids around and them not giving a rat's ass! Some supernatual force didn't takeover Justin's body causing him to suddenly rip her costume. I don't buy that red bra shit because the blown up pictures show there was only red lacing at the hem of the bra. How anti-climatic would it have been if Justin ripped off that small piece only revealing one side of a freakin' bra? Then, what about Justin's comments shortly thereafter leaving the stage saying "We just love giving you guys something to talking about!" He told on himself. They planned it...end of. Janet just wasn't prepared for that kind of backlash. I bet if it got a positive reception, she'd be owning up to it. interesting viewpoint.

Who cares if it was planned or an accident? Who cares who's idea it was? The fact is the whole thing got blown way out of proportion. It was a tit. And a fake one at that, with the nipple mostly hidden by a huge guard. That's nothing to shield the innocents from.
As an example of how badly the whole thing was blown out of proportion, lemme tell you this little story. The incident happened during my last year of high school. Every year my school has an airband competition. (basically, air guitar and lipsynching to music with touches of humour, and the most entertaining act wins) Two of the groups who entered had Jackson-related humour. One had a boy in drag as Janet miming the TittyFreakOut incident with another boy dressed as Timberlake. The other entry had one boy dressed as Michael, and a few others dressed as little kids, showing what's supposed have gone on at the Neverland Ranch. Guess which group got banned from the competition? If you guessed Michael, you'd be wrong. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Whereas MJ was all about "He said this" or " he Did this", there is no concrete evidence with MJ. It's not like there are any R.Kelly type videos floating around on the net. All in all the whole Janet thing was blown out of order, especially when you think of the nasty things Madonna has got up to over the years. I personally think the over-reaction was to do with her being a Jackson. Don't forget at the same time MJ was awaiting trial for child-abuse. It was like they couldn't have more than one Jackson at a time being "Scandalous". [Edited 9/22/06 3:53am]

I asked this question in another thread, so I'm being more rhetorical with this one: what I don't understand is exactly what type of music do people, particularly her former fans, expect from Janet? As I said in that thread, I know that Janet has read--or is at least aware of-- all of the criticisms about her image and her music. It's impossible for her not to know. But like I said earlier, I don't think Janet is going to back down from doing what she wants to change to appease ANYONE except maybe someone like JD or her team. She probably rather not sell anything than look like she is caving-in to public criticism. But then again, I also think that the public just won't give the woman a break. It's like Janet has to have this poignant, deep-felt OR completely innovative cd for people to even be impressed by it. It's like her music has to be a masterpiece or something completely different for people to take notice. I sometimes think we have higher expectations of her, and for each release, those expectations even get higher because she is 40, after all, and should be doing something more substantial or something? And she did bare her breast so she should have learned from that mistake, too?? Honestly, I think that Janet is a victim of ageism as well as all of the other isms being discussed in this thread. I think that happens to a lot of female pop artists as they age--very much like what happens to actresses. Sure we could make a case for Madonna because I think when Madonna was turning 40, didn't she release Ray of Light? Well now I guess Janet is expected to make a Ray of Light-type of cd in order to be taken seriously? Well, maybe she doesn't want to do that. Madonna has already done that anyway. And maybe she doesn't want to be as overtly defiant as the Dixie Chicks either--who interestly have also gotten their share of criticism for exploiting their controversy in a way. I really believe that Janet would have been accused of the same thing--even more so. Very few people would have taken her seriously even if she did decide to "speak-out" through her music. Critics would have said that she's not taking responsibility for her actions or something. So I still say that Janet is really in a no-win situation. So at least as far as her interviews are concerned, I also agree with this statement: I think Janet would be best served, by trying to steer clear of this issue, and when it is presented to her, to just say honestly what she feels, and talk about the double standard in America with men and women and sex issues. Yes.. I think it would be better to just address the SB incident by discussing the real social issues in this country--the fact that double-standards do exist. That's something all of us women, in particular, can relate to. What happened to Janet is just an example of a larger problem.
