Lou Reed to perform entire BERLIN album live!

via www.pitchforkmedia.com:

Lou Reed's career is full of challenging material (ahem, Metal Machine Music), and right up there is his third solo record, 1973's Berlin. An ambitious concept album about a drug-addicted couple named Jim and Caroline, Berlin was never performed live-- emphasis on the "was." Thirty-three years later, Art at St. Ann's, the Sydney Festival, and UCLA Live will sponsor Reed's first live performances of the album at New York's St. Ann's Warehouse, from December 14-17.

According to the St. Ann's website, each show will be a "theatrically realized" version of the album. We're not quite sure what that means, but we do know that our favorite friend of Lou's will be part of the performance. No, not David Bowie, though that would be cool. It's Antony, so get your tickets now and have your family's super depressing holiday theater outing covered.

I've been into this album for a long time, even though I'm not the world's biggest Lou Reed fan. This is an amazing piece of music, and definitely one of Reed's unsung classics! I'm actually considering schlepping out to New York for this... hmmm

Sounds cool. Each nightI bet the audience will get different interpretations of the album, hmmm though they might not if it's too "theatrically realized".

Love this album! Not so sure about the poster that says it will be the "Sgt Pepper of the 70's," though.

Now this is great news, but what's his fixation with Fat Anthony? The guy RUINED the songs he sang on the Raven tour. Starting with Tell It To Your Heart, which is a bullet-stopping offence.

I saw the New York tour, back in the day, before he broke his leg. It was okay but nothing special.

Know what you mean. I saw it, urm, three times in London. I wish I'd saved my money and gone just the once because every show was exactly the same, right down to what he said. Mind you, did you ever catch the Magic & Loss tour? Same format - he played the whole album beginning to end , but you weren't allowed to drink/smoke/eat/shout/whoop/holler/heckle/breathe/have anything remotely ressembling a good time through the whole show. Great music but a very dreary experience. I suspect Berlin will be more of the same with that overrated jerk Fat Tony overemoting all over the place.

He did do Metal Machine music live in Vienna four years ago with a German musical troupe called Zeitkratzer.

And read this, it's funny:
