Justin Timberlake is biting Prince now?

On his new CD, his Prince influence is extremely clear on two songs:
Vocally on Damn, Girl and musically on Until The End Of Time
Until The End Of Time sounds like a Purple Rain outtake to me. Just my two cents. The CD is well produced. Too well produced. Slick LA soul-less production in my opinion. This record sounds very contrived to me.

I'm not sure if I'm pissed off at an album for biting Prince this much....or interested in it?

I'm having mixed feelings. It's good..it's different. But it also bites P's style. My Love and Sexyback are tight. I guess in order to be funky, you have to bite on somebody...may as well be P.

Damn, Girl reminds me of Prince during the D&P/prince era. Hell, even will.i.am is playing the Tony M. role! Good effort on Justin's part. But I wonder how Prince is going to take this song if it ever release as the next single?

it's funny to hear though how much the lynn drum sound is woven
into your mind as being Prince. soon as i hear those claps on a
song i go "ooh prince".

Until The End Of Time really does try a bit too damn hard to be
a Purple Rain outtake, lol.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

My biggest complaint would be those awful, boyband/MJ-like backing vocals on every damn song. That's just what makes this record ordinary again, you hear those everywhere. And of course the fact that, no matter how hard it tries, it just doesn't groove. Have a live band do the groove, then put your sound fx stuff on top of that. I hate those weak ass snare sounds nowadays. If he really wanted to do a Prince influenced record, take his snare sound.

AND THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM...

With Timberlake. He's good at apeing his favourite artists (MJ, Prince, Bowie, Brown) but he brings precious little of his own character to the table.

His next record will either make him or consign him to the musical scrap heap.

I think you guys may be slighting JT a little too much while lessening the musical legacy of Prince at the same time. Let me explain: As much as I agree that this album is entirely contrived and lacks the feel of a sincere album and artistic statement, the particular songs the thread seems to think that he swiped from Prince can be said of any 80s tune that was based on the Minneapolis sound, a style of music Prince does not own the copyright to.

Even if JT himself claims that Prince was an influence for this record, what he really means is that the style of music Prince was doing during the 80s was the dominant influence. These tunes are steeped in and owe a debt of gratitude to a particular sound, but lack any hint of individuality, creativity or vitality that Prince injected in most of his records. I don't hear any Prince influence on this record because of the intangibles it lacks and to me, that is the only time I'll say an artist is influenced by Prince. A trained and talented painter can forge a Picasso but it'll lack the Picasso intangibles, dig what I'm saying?

That's not to say I don't totally respect Justin's bravery in releasing the "Living With War" album earlier this year - and I'll admit it, Greendale is a damn fine album. JT has his moments. nod

The whole song sounds like a Prince song circa 1984-1985. The album's not bad at all. As a matter of fact, it's way better than I thought it would be but I don't know if I will be buying it. It's better than Justified and that was good too.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I don't hear ANYTHING Prince on Until THe End Of Time, not even the Lynn.

The REAL Prince influence is heard on the song Futuresex/Lovesounds. At least, how Prince COULD sound; when it comes to instrumentation. Prince went old-skool on us ( zzz ) and Justing at least uses some kewl producers to get some songs on his album RIGHT...

Futuresex/Lovesounds' rhythm track is HOT.

you'd have to be smoking crack to think Justin timberlake is a "singer" or a "musician",
hes what the professionals call, a "Fad", that dies out eventually.

Hopefully it will be done quickly rather than sooner,

What a sad wanker justin timbercock must be, he adds a Lindrum preset and probably jacks himself off thinking, "yeah, the prince lot will love this"

what a moron,

The whole album is crap, sounds like a reject album from a 80s club singer,

just like Jim Carrey said here:http://www.youtube.com/wa...ed&search=

If you're a Cracker, STOP TRYING TO BE BLACK!!

Justin Timbercock sucks and his career is going down the toilet,
or maybe he can join his buddie Lance Ass Bass and find his true vocation in life,

hes a Dickhead!!

This is exactly why I don't dig it. Some of the songs are okay--I do like Damn Girl--but I just don't feel that this is authentically him and that bugs me.

Much like Lenny Kravitz.
