I've watched parts of two award's shows this year - The BET Everything But The Kitchen Sink Awards (for Prince) and the VMAs (for an assignment) I seriously need to take a moment to mourn the passing of pop music. This stuff is absolute rubbish. I really can't believe that these "artists" are making a living. I can't even blame them. I blame the people who buy this garbage that masquerades as music. Also, is it me or do these "artists" lack charisma? Most of them seem like folks that were dragged off the streets - nothing particularly special, mezmerising, or remarkable about any of them. Wait..did My Humps just win for best Hip Hop video? Lawd have mercy, it's over! But damn, the Rock is FINE!!! perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

No, he didn't present an award. He presented the Killers. He's still wearing the corn rows - really not a good look on him IMHO. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

I just can't stop watching, it is definitely a train wreck I can't keep my eyes off of. I'm wondering if anyone else noticed MTV's poor production value showing through when the voices from the control room would sneak through in the middle of performances and performer introductions. I know that the stuff at every commercial break was intended, but there were other voices that sounded like we were not supposed to hear them.
Adding to the list of disasters from tonight, I would like to nominate LL Cool J and 50 Cent for their job of introducing the best female video.

Well i just watched this show, well i should say i fastfowarded through most of it and stopped, when i saw something i liked. All i can say is, MTV is so full of itself, the nerve of them to give out Video awards when they dont play videos. Had it not been for Jessica Simpson wearing the tighest shortest dress ever this show would have been a total wash out. Well where to begin, Beyonce didnt sing, Oh yeah she dances, so does Shakira and she sings. Beyonce did sing though when she was trashing herself along the floor. Also "Hint" enough with coming out in a long outfit and then pulling it off to show a smaller outift, from now on if you take it off, you have to be wearing nothing underneath, u wanna shock, reall shock us. Next Jack Black, sorry i just dont like him, hes funny for a second if even that long, enough with the creey fat guy. Also am the only one a little disturbed that LIL KIM came out like that on stage, real good message for America, the first Black person on the show is brought out by cops, REALLY TACKY sorry Lil Kim got no love for ya. Lou Reed, not sure why he was there, but if youre gonna make a statement like that "Play more Rock N Roll" dont do it before giving out an award to NON ROCK bands like Fall Out Boy and the Killers. So you are wondering did i like anything??? Well like I said Jessica Simpsons Outfit, and the 2 seconds of Seeing Nicole and PCD, though why not let them perform their own song, instead of having them do the loop on yet another horrible stereotypical Ludacris song: oh yeah and Pharrel, lose the chain it weighs more than U! "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I think that show best represents why music sales are so damn low. It was a big night of "Who's that?" and "Who cares?". No real big surprises, just a few drunken akward moments. It was just weird and boring and even Jack Black's energy couldn't make it work. I know some people will criticize the Gore speech (especially Connie) but I dug that. He's an entertaining guy. I like the fact that the only person that anybody acknowledges as having a stable career presented him. Of course I'm referring to Queen Latifah, one of the few people that is known. As for the winners, sucked that they snubbed Madonna and to a lesser extent, Shakira and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
As for good things, its cool that Gnarls Barkley won two awards (not sure for what...I just heard the won two). Jack Black was funny (the only one that was....Sarah was OK). I liked Shakira's performance but that was about it except for the Racounters rocking.

Dear Lord that sucked. Badly.
A 3-hour showcase of the worst "music" that the industry has to offer. That was just sad. Why the fuck a real musician like Jack White would agree to be seen anywhere near that train wreck of a show is mindboggling. And thanks alot, Axl. Thanks for screwing up a great band over a decade ago, and thanks for walking out on stage and reminding us how almost none of these motherfuckers there tonight could come within a million miles of what you once were. Say something nice! Okay, Shakira was hot. The Raconteurs rocked...with Billy Gibbons...briefly. Hype Williams is a talented man. Jessica Simpson looked hot, too. Nice job, John Mayer. I guess Christina Aguilera and Gnarls Barkley don't totally suck. And Pink, I like you and all, but we get it already. You don't like the president. What a rebellious position that is on MTV in 2006, huh? Oh yeah, even though I'm a "Connie" or whatever, I kinda dig Al Gore. Not enough to vote for him or anything (although I did in '92), but enough to hang out with him and travel the planet together and try to cool it and stuff. Music needs a revolution. And this time - please - let it be led by actual musicians.

However, when I say forced, I mean FORCED! This show was just awful. Lip syncing has become the standard on these shows. Sadly, some of the people who tried to sing live would have been better off lip syncing. Beyonce's performances are getting progressively worse and it is a shame. Panic at the disco??? What is that all about? The Killers? Man, mainstream rock is weak as hell! Ok Go - Who the hell are they and why am I being told that a bunch of guys on treadmills is a great performance? Justin Timberlake? His, uh falsetto needs some work! He looks like he's thinking "and a 1 and a 2 and a 3..." when he's dancing. Avenged Sevenfold? The Black Eyed Peas with the "Lovely" (LMAO) Fergie? That Hype Williams "tribute" was awkward and dull. I laughed when the umbrella hit Missy in the head. Britney and Kevin? That was not funny. Lou Reed was literally on stage for about 30 seconds it seemed. What is more disgusting is the plastic veejays salivating over these "artists" and raving over their embarassingly lame performances. I must really be an old fart, because I thought this show was HORRIBLE!!! It reminded me of a talent show at the high school where I used to teach. Actually some of those kids could have done a better job LIP SYNCING and dancing to the same tracks. Oh, and Sway needs to take a communications class. [Edited 8/31/06 21:09pm] Good thing I don't have cable TV at my place. I'm not missing anything.

I woke up in the middle of the night to get some water and made the mistake of turning on the tv and watching this (all the way through!)...it was pretty schlocky to be sure, but I'm surprised that there wasn't at least just ONE standout performance . Christina and Beyonce, for all their pop chart domination annoying-ness, can usually rouse me to a "sang it, girl"....but even THEY had me yawning...wth is going on with the pop music these days? There's nothing really to get excited about anymore

Fortunately for me, I only watched the first hour. I couldn't take anymore. What a joke this show was. The performances were lame (although I did enjoy Shakira and Clef). When the Pussycat Dolls and My Humps win awards, I know it's time to change the channel.
I guess I'm totally old school cause I can't stand the lame ass shit that's out their today. I would rather see Dylan, Marvin, Al Green, Sam Cooke, The Beatles and the Stones any old day. Most pop music and hip hop right now sucks ass!! I switched over and watched Andre Agassi win a great tennis match.

I honestly think it's time to retire the VMAs. Even their new ways of marketing the show by getting viewers to vote for the winners, doesn't cover up the fact that the show is a mess. Music videos just aren't exciting anymore so no one really cares which video wins. It's ridiculous.
And the performances. Dreadful. Justin Timberlake can dance a bit, but what an uneventful opening. And Shakira's voice was awful.

I watch the VMA’s every year. I regret this increasingly with each viewing. Here are my thoughts . . .
What I liked: 1. Xtina sang quite well. Her stint was a welcomed break from the chaos. 2. Shakira was awesome—very exotic, curvy, entertaining, and fun. She would be sexy with or without clothing imo. 3. I am a bigger fan of Panic! At the Disco. Even though the vocals were shaky, they did a great number, and their costumes rocked. I’m actually glad that they won the big one. Good for them. (though I was rooting for Madonna.) 4. JT’s “shelf” bit near the end was hilarious. 5. Those treadmill guys were fun to watch. 6. I loved how Mtv used the entire hall for the visuals/backdrops. It was quite stunning. (Reminded me of a big, fat Madonna concert I once attended.) 7. Waling and flailing aside, Beyonce’s choreography was off the hook. I hope she gives mad props to Janet. It really was vintage Rhythm nation work done very well imo. 8. My Chemical Romance did a superb number during the pre-show. I loved the drumming. Ehh . . . 1. In the interest of being cutting edge, Mtv has opted to bring their staging closer into the audience through the use of several catwalk-style curves and extensions. This sucks ass. It just adds a disjointed and unfocused quality to the production. They’ve done this for the past 3 three years. This also confuses the award winners who have to waste airtime figuring out how to get to where they need to be. I favor the old school Oscar-style approach---one big, bad ass, beautiful stage with rock and roll royalty clumped together where we can see them. 2. What the hell was J-Lo wearing? Some sort of designer skull cap I guess. 3. Imho, I prefer rap videos over live performances. Why? Well, as showcased by Ludacris at the VMA’s, he was dealt with the deep internal struggle of figuring out which side of the stage to linger most. (Luckily, we were blessed with his synchronized and choreographed arm and hand movements.) “Should I go stage left? Oh no, I HAVE to stay in the middle!!”---All the while rapping to his funky beats. Personally, I have nothing against Luda. I actually like a lot of his songs. Overall, rap performances, even with the booty-shaking girls, leave me uninspired. 4. In the interest of being cutting edge, Mtv decided to include more backstage footage. This was overkill. I don’t need more reality tv. Again, it made the whole production more scattered and unfocused. 5. The show lacked the presence of a major established artist—like Prince, Madonna, Janet, or even Mariah for goodness sake!!! So many people were far too earnest. 6. Sloppy. This is how I would describe Mtv’s production work. Cues were either delayed or missed entirely—particularly in the pre and post shows. I know this is a massive production and all, but I think someone needs to be fired. 7. In the interest of being cutting edge, Mtv decided to allow the public to vote in all of the major categories. This is just an opinion, but I think the awards were a result of the split-vote phenomenon. Votes for the major artists were split by the majority, and acts with smaller but very aggressive fan bases won out. I don’t mean to take away from any of the winners, but how many upsets and victorious underdogs should there be in one awards show? Well, there were a heck of a lot of them. It just seemed incredibly imbalanced. Perhaps these public votes need to be weighted along with votes from other artists, directors, choreographers, dancers, and people who actually work in the industry and are experienced in their respective fields. The likelihood that millions of little teeny boppers determined this year’s winners just gives me the creeps. 8. Lastly, whoever that guy was who pre-empted Panic! At the Disco’s speech needs to be slapped. There is nothing worse than raining on someone else’s shining, glorious moment. They need to shine, uninterrupted. Well, that’s all folks. Overall, I was underwhelmed. I should have just read a book instead. -g
