Midnight Star "No Parking on the Dance Floor"

One of the best albums in a very strong decade of soul music albums. Practically every track on the album -- "Freak-A-Zoid," "Wet My Whistle," "Electricity," the title track -- was in heavy rotation on radio stations, in clubs and in personal music listening from summer 1983 through spring 1984.

One of my favorite R&B albums from the 80s.In the summer of '83,the song "Freak-A-Zoid" was da jam!! Slick, electrofunk at it's finest. This is one of those 'Thriller'-like albums that remained "hot" for a long time, with one big hit after another.By the fall of 83,the second single "Wet My Whistle" was doing alot of damage on the charts and at the same time, the album track "Electricity" was receiving alot of airplay, even though it was never released as a single. In the spring of 84,the title track was released as a single.I think it's the best song on the album.Slowing things down, the track "Slow Jam" also became a fan favorite. The album has yet another noteworthy track: the closing "Playmates",a sexy, playful midtempo jam that also could have been a single.

I saw these guys in concert last year and they kicked ass! Opening their show with "Electricity",they performed all of the major hits from this album.

"Slow Jam" was also the first song written and recorded by songwriter Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds.

There was not a weak song on "No Parking on the Dance Floor." Songs such as "Night Rider," "Feels So Good" and "Electricity" also would have been hit singles if they were released.

nod I still can't believe that "Electricity" was never released as a single. That song had "hit" written all over it.

If anything, "No Parking on the Dance Floor" was a victim of its own success. Songs like "Electricity," "Night Rider" and "Slow Jam" saturated the market so much that it seemed like they were singles. By the time they could have been chosen as releases, they already were played to death.

I believe SOLAR Records wasn't anticipating the response the album generated and had little idea how to market it so it could take advantage of the buzz. As good as "Wet My Whistle" was, I felt it was chosen because it wasn't played quite as often on the radio and in clubs as "Electicity," "Feels So Good," "Slow Jam," etc., were.

A similar thing happened with Keith Sweat's debut album, "Make It Last Forever," where practically every song was in heavy radio and club rotation. However, in the case of "Make It Last Forever" the record company was able to capitalize on most of the songs that generated a response.

In a lot of sense, "No Parking on the Dance Floor" is a perfect soul album. From the electro-funk of "Freak-A-Zoid" and "Electricity" to the anthemic title track to the slick pop of "Wet My Whistle" to the torch ballad "Slow Jam," every song is catchy and memorable.

Why do I have the feeling that "Soul Alive" (a title from an old great dance show in the the late 70's - Gerry Bledsoe R.I.P.) is really "David Eye"?..If it is, welcome back! The Org needs you! wink

I love that album! One of my favorite songs on it was "Night Rider" It had that funky Billie Jean type groove. Does anyone remember the Prince look-alike in the video for "No Parking On The Dance Floor"?

No, "Electricity" was not a released single. The singles from "No Parking on the Dance Floor" were "Freak-A-Zoid," "Wet My Whistle" and the title track.

That's correct. Many people assume "Electricity" was a single, because it recieved so much airplay. Our local R&B station wore that song out!
