My love affair with Avant Garde, free jazz.

I am really into this lately; the freedom of it, the chances that these wild ass geniuses take with their music. Sometimes they fail, other times they ring my bell and undo my zippa. Crazy, avant garde, eclectic jazz, that's my new craze. Been into it for a short time, and feel bad that it took this long. Some examples of the masters:

Tim Berne's The Shell Game:

Sevens:

Big Satan:

pure ear candy. Prince doesn't come close.

Sun Ra, in the picture seems to be judging us with his eyes. He knows what our priorities should be, but we all fall for the pop junk or hit of the week.

Audience, we shall see how open minded these Prince fans really think they are. Challenge they ass..hehe

You have SO piqued my curiosity. eek

I want to begin this love affair too!

I just started listening to jazz this summer ..because I'm writing something where one of my characters is actually an 'avant garde jazz musician who doesn't believe in structure and convention.'

I know nothing about jazz. razz So, to prepare for the character I bought a bunch of intro to jazz stuff and various collections. So far, the only music I've REALLY liked has been Coltrane (!) and Monk (!).

I don't like Miles (yet) sad . So I've put his CDs in the back of the entertainment center. sad

BUT I LOVE intensity and free-spiritedness ...so let me look into these cats you're talking about.

Got any other recommendations?

Something wild, thunderous... sad

I really like the Marc Durcet, Tom Rainey , Tim Berne "Big Satan" combination-- and I'm diggin Durcet's guitar-- reminds me of some of Bill Frisell's work, and David Torn (or even some of Jean Paul Bourelly's more "out" trips...)
