i think that most acts in the 70's actually performed live while in the 80's and 90's most artists lip-synched their performances.... [Edited 8/22/06 5:04am] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

...
I never could figure that out...even in it's early days, some people would lip-synch, while others, particularly large bands, would perform live. For example, When the Isley Brothers first appeared, as just the three older brothers ("It's Your Thing, "Lay away", "Pop That Thang"), they showed up lip synching. But a couple of years later, as 3+3 with the younger siblings ("Who's That Lady, Summer Breeze"), The Isleys showed up full and live (though somebody in the sound booth kept turning down Ernie's guitar solos, ). But yeah, Mandrill, War, James Brown, Tower of Power, Average White Band, The Ike & Tina Turner Review, Kool and The Gang, The Jr Walker All Stars, they all performed live, Yet other bands , like Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, or The Ohio Players, lip-synched their hits. Whatever the reason, by 1976 on forward, it seems everybody was lip synching, band or no band... ... I didn't realize my post turned up blank.
My post had a youtube link to AWB performing Schoolboy Crush live on Soul Train and I also mentioned that I recalled seeing a clip of Minnie Riperton performing live.

Yeah, those are some of my favorite appearances! I remember being pissed that Rufus featuring Chaka were lip synching, 'cause when they appeared earlier on shows like The Midnight Special, they got to play live. But it seems like that eventually happened to all of those shows, at least by the late 70's-early 80's. I remember when the group Slave finally showed up for a whole hour on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, but they lip-synched the entire time, I was like, WTF, !! ...
