Terence Trent d'Arby / "Do You Love Me Like You Say" Terence Trent d'Arby Do You Love Me Like You Say is a serious jam. I (heard it/saw it) for the first time today. It came on BETJ, (the alternate BET station for RnB/Soul/Alternative) in a show called In Video.
I have never got into TTD, I know bout him and like his songs like Sign Your Name and Wishing Well but have never purchased his musc. Is he worth getting into and where should I start, a Hits collection or an LP. PRINCE: Always and Forever

He is SO worth getting into The song you saw was off the "Vibrator" album which is great. Start with Introducing the Hardline (the first album) then get either Vibrator or Symphony or Damn, both are GREAT. If you dig those THEN I would move on to Wildcard (Neither Fish Nor Flesh is a take it or leave it for me personally but lots of folks seem to love it)...

"Do You Love Me Like You Say" is from "Symphony Or Damn". His most electronic and experimental album, and in my opinion his best.

Turn the Page probably a close second.

Without a doubt . IMO all his albums are amazing except angels and vampires, right? not what i'd calling "amazing" IMHO... some good songs.. but, yeah...heard that kinda thing from him before and a lot better done. . [Edited 6/20/06 3:44am]

Angels & Vampires is one of those rare things that I'd have to call terribly bad. As a professional musician he really should have at least some knowledge on basic recording and mixing skills yet he really wasn't able to pull it off by himself, even if he has been in the business for more than twenty years.

i have to say i agree. not impressed with his drumming on it either. shame.. he really could have done something powerful with his no-major-label freedom... ..but after hearing vol. 1 i am really not compelled to look into vol. 2 vol. 1 i expect would receive maybe 1 star in music mags. . Get them soon and you will not be disappointed

The credits say the drums are done with "drumagog". It's a triggering piece of software that replaces all the played hits with multi-velocity samples - so in theory he could have done those drums even by playing cardboard boxes and then let the software replace those sounds with its own professional sample selection. I don't know, nothing on that record works technically. But it's not just that, I'm not impressed by his vocals on it either. The first time I heard the Rolling Stone cover and he goes "ANGIE!" it genuinely startled me. I jumped back a bit. And you know there must be something wrong with your cover version if it does that.

Weird about the drums. Hasn't he played competant drums on previous albums?
I like the material, but it's got none of the right dynamics. My Legacy

Some artists write the song, then deconstruct it and arrange it in a non-standard way, so the song sounds like it's coming through a kaleidescope or something. Recent Tom Waits for example. But it doesn't seem like TTD is trying to go for that effect. My Legacy

Let Her Down Easy is exquisite and 'Vibrator' (the album) is solid right the way through, though it may take a few listens before it really sinks in. Lyrics on Vibrator are great (if occassionally pretensious), if you're a real romantic, this album's for you.

His most consistent album is "Wildcard". But "Do You Love Me..." is great. He's very, very underrated.
But Angels & Vampires is pretty unlistenable.

And if you are not romantic you might love it as well . Vibrator is my favourite album ever by any artist and I am not a romantic person . I don't get it. Vibrator is the one TTD record I never really got into. But it seems to be everyone's favorite. My Legacy

There's a cool best of TTD double album including the 12" and b-sides of them (just kinda like Prince's ultimate)
Just click www.amazon.de (german version) and fill 'Terence Trent greatest hits' that shoulda work [Edited 6/21/06 6:42am]

That's 'cos orgers are a very strange group of people. Vibrator's got about 4 really good (some even great) songs on it. The rest is pretty pointless. That album killed off his career after the deserved revival he had with Symphony Or Damn. I hope Littlebluecorvette doesn't listen to this strangeness too much. Introducing The Hardline and Symphony Or Damn were the best and most succesful TTD albums.

Yep, really cool and great voice for doing covers. I was listening when he first came out in 1987 but didn't care too much for him then. Jump ahead to 2005 and I was able to trade for some of his live stuff and I really like him live. Then I went back and got the other cds. Really good stuff but there are only like 4-5 cds out for him. Hard to find his stuff now but worth getting if you can. "

I think it's more artistic than "Symphony" and less poppy, that's probably why it tanked commercially. "Symphony" is fantastic too, but it's more straight-in-the-face type melodic pop (great songwriting though). "Vibrator" is the stuff you should put on if you want something to grow on you imo.

I hope you folks don't seriously think that "Symphony Or Damn" is of that different or higher quality than "Vibrator" is. That has nothing to do with "org strangeness" - what the hell is this again? I think anyone with a decent ear should be able to tell those two albums are about the same quality songwriting and production-wise, and that's even the consensus around the TTD fanbase. It's a different matter altogether which one anyone personally prefers.
