I don't think it means anything. Because liking Prince doesn't stop one liking Beyonce or Kelly Clarkson. And things are always shifting. For instance once upon time it was "cool" to like MJ/Jacksons, now people look down upon people if they like MJ, but it's still alright if you like the J5...

That I'm trying to be more intelligent than I really am.

well i've known some incredibly smart and educated people who
didn't like any of the radiohead or bjork stuff or jazz. they
just liked britney and mariah and stuff.

i guess it's more about laziness. some people just don't care
enough about music to delve a little deeper and find reward,
or pleasure from looking beyond the mainstream.

don't think that makes them less intelligent tho.

I like to frequent the metal-sludge.com site, because it dishes a lot of dirt on 80s hair band guys, what they're doing now, etc, and it used to be quite funny...

but I've had to distance myself a little because damn, true believers of metal really come off as shitheads on that site. I used to be like this? Oh yeah, I was 14 at the time

I'm not sure it says anything about intelligence but I think it can speak to a person's temperament.

there were studies done on musically adventurous people and those with simple tastes. no surprise people who were more adventurous in their listening were deemed more intelligent. supposedly, their choices in sound stimulated more areas of the brain. geek and despite my vast sonic library, i'm still an idiot. dunce

Mara

Not much.

There was this kid in one of my university literature classes who was one of the smartest, brightest and outspoken of the students in our discussion group and then I'd see him @ a gay function shakin' his bon bon to Britney Spears and Aqua's "Barbie Girl."

It means nothing.
